Everyone is so knowledgeable here...need suggestions

Okay....I'm wondering about milk and vitamins. I thought I was doing good with fat free milk until I read something the other day about soy milk, which supposedly is preferred over fat free. However, it seems like I also remember reading somewhere that soy milk may not be as good as everyone thinks. What's the word here????

Vitamins - What does everyone take for a good multi-vitamin? Do you also take any additional supplements? It's so easy to go over board with this and it's very confusing. One doctor several years ago said Centrum was the best. All I take right now is Omega-3.

THANKS!

Well, Kim, I'll be the first to admit here that I TRULY am quite knowledgeable. I am also very important, glamourous and popular. Some folks have said to me they have the uncontrollable urge to curtsey in my presence (hmm, let's see, was it curtsey or roll their eyes that they said? I forget which one)

Sorry, were you asking something about milk and vitamins? :p

Well, my personal opinion is that, in the long run, there doesn't seem to be a huge difference in health benefits between soy milk and skim. Yeah, there is some literature about the benefits of soy, but then there's other literature contradicting it.

I would just go with whichever one you prefer.

With regard to your question about vitamins, I actually take 1 Viactiv (calcium supplement, 50% RDA in each chew) in the morning and 1 Women's One-A-Day multivitamin (has 45% calcium, more than any other multivitamin) in the evening because your body cannot absorb more than 500mg (50% RDA) of calcium at any one time. I take the Viactiv because I'm very lactose intolerant, and I don't know that I'm getting my full RDA of calcium every day if I don't.

I've had several nutritionists tell me that as long as you're making a pretty good effort to eat recommended amounts of fruits/vegetables and whole grains, it is completely unnecessary to go bonkers with a million different kinds of vitamins... plus, I don't have that kind of time or money! :)

I can't answer the milk question, but am looking forward to a response from someone who can!!

I take One-A-Day for Women and calcium supplement daily. Recently in Women's Health they rated One-A-Day for Women the top rated multivitamin for women. Hope this is somewhat helpful!

I personally find that I get more of a bloat from any dairy. I have used soy milk (and actually prefer it) but a doc recently told me that the soy promotes estrogen production which can lead to weight gain (or inability to lose) - so I'm tending to just stay away from milks. I don't really miss it, though it did take some adjusting to go from milk to water for protein drinks - but I got used to it.

Vitamins - I use Shaklee and personally I love them - but I think it all comes down to learning how much of your micronutrient needs are filled by the foods you eat, and then if you need one, finding what works for you. I find my Shaklee products to be fantastic, but I know a lot of folks around here think they're too pricey. I use their multi. I also take calcium, fish oil, acidophilus, DHEA, and glucosamine. I've also heard good think about Puritan's Pride vitamins.

Good luck.

I'll be walking the Komen 3-day (60 miles) the week after Cathe's RT. To view my webpage go to: https://www.kintera.org/faf/donorReg/donorPledge.asp?ievent=202302&supid=166016627

I was also thinking of starting on some kind of glucosamine supplement. Do you think they help with joint problems?

I have been taking glucosamine for a while now and believe that it has made a difference for me. My knees still pop and crack a little, but they used to bother me after running which is getting better.
