Ever wear a HRM for 24 hours...

to figure out how many calories you burn on any given day?

I'm wearing mine today. I know it's not going to be dead-on since it only knows my age, height and weight but am wondering whether or not it's an accurate measure of how many calories I'm burning in 24 hours.

My weight has been fluctuating for the past few months. I just can't get that correct calorie intake to have consistent weight loss. I decided to do this in an attempt to at least know what I'm burning on a regular work/non-exercise day so that I can adjust my calories accordingly.

Anyone ever do this or am I just totally crazy?!?!?!

Melissa: If you're crazy then I'm totally nuts. :p I just bought a GoWearFit monitor- I got tired of guessing how many calories I should eat and this thing is supposedly pretty darn accurate. So starting Saturday night, I have been wearing the armband and getting some neat readings. I realized- running around with the kids burns more calories than I thought, I didn't get enough sleep last night and I didn't eat enough calories yesterday (who knew?). So yeah, I don't blame you for wanting to know. :)

Thanks Patti, you're being nuts makes me feel a whole lot better!!!;)

I decided to do it on a work-day (which is primarily sedentary) where I know I'm not going to exercise and use this as kind of a base. I'm interested to see what it says tomorrow morning and compare it to how many calories I eat today.

Usually mine does not track anything until it hits 100 beats per minute. My HR monitor is a few years old, I guess the newer ones track this stuff?

Melissa: Yep, finding out that I did not eat enough yesterday was like porn for me. I swear, it's a fantasy of mine that I am consistently not eating enough- we'll see if that is true over the next week or so. Dare I dream? Let us know what you find out!

Yes, the newer HRMs will track calories burned based on your HR, no matter what it is.

Hey, Melissa...I wore my HRM to bed one night so that I could wake up, hit 'exercise' (while still lying there, hald awake) and find my resting heart rate! LOL

Keep us posted.

I may have to try this!

I've thought of doing this but just never have. I hope you'll share you're results. Maybe I'll do this one day this week too. I've found my body wants to be a size 6 and I want it to be a size 4. Guess who's winning that battle?

I'm jealous, my body wants to be a size 16 and I want it to be no bigger than a 10. One day at a time, I'll get there.

I wore my new Polar for 24 hours a few weeks ago and it seemed pretty accurate to me based on BMR/AMR calculators on the internet and what I burned during my workout.

Mines too. Jillian Michaels mentioned wearing the heart rate monitor to get your calories burned. Maybe I should invest in a new one, it would save some hit or miss guessing with the calorie intake.

I wore my polar for half a day once ... not very comfortable, but interesting!

I will confess that I have had my GoWearFit for several weeks now and have worn it almost constantly, including all night. The arm band is much more comfortable than the chest band. I take it off to charge and shower. Wish I'd had it when I went through my weight loss period, but even now, it's very useful information.

I appreciate everyone's input and encouragement.

So far I've had it on for about 9 hours and I've burned 811 calories.

I was averaging about 100 calories and hour until about 2 hours ago. My job is pretty sedentary so I'm hoping it'll really kick into high-gear once I get out of here!!

I'll let you know tomorrow what my total calories burned in the 24 hours end up being.

I wore mine for a whole day once (minus my workout). I started it after my shower and wore through the whole day and night, about 22 hours. If I remember right it read around 1900 calories which I thought was high since it didn't include my workout. I want to try it again some time, but the chest strap gave me a horrible rash from wearing it too long.

I have toyed with the idea of doing this, but never have. You all have given me the motivation to try it out!

Hi Jean. I've been wearing it for about 14 hours now and the chest strap is starting to bother me. I'm sure I'll have a rash by morning..:(. This better be worth it!

Well just in case anyone was looking to buy the GoWear Fit, Amazon has it on sale for $145, I bought mine last week for 170! If you are looking to save a few bucks, I don't find the optional watch/clip display a must have, it's definitely a nice to have, but I could have lived without it.

I'm curious: is there a big difference between the GoWear Fit and a Polar HRM? I might have to take a look at that. Thanks Dela!

Back with results...

My Polar HRM said I burned 1888 calories in 24 hours with no exercise. Not sure if that is accurate or not.

I think I'm going to look into the BodyBugg or GoWear Fit. Although I'm not crazy about wearing it on my arm...

Melissa - When I wore it, my total was right around 2000 calories and that included one of the CLX weight workouts (which only burn about 200 calories for me). I have a pretty sedentary job and sat at my desk all day.

It was right around my estimate (BMR=1500, AMR=1800, workout=200 - total estimate 2000).
