Evening Snack

Hi all. I just wanted some of your opinions on eating a light snack before bed. I have read things that say you shouldn't eat anything after about 6:30 at night and then I have also read that eating a light snack like cottage cheese or a little bit of peanut butter before bed helps your metabolism burn through the night. What do you all think? And if you do eat a snack before bed what are some suggestions of good choices?

Thanks!

Katie

I usually have a snack before bed. Mine usually is a mixture of Albacore/salsa/cottage cheese/flax oil. Albacore before bed is ok, but add a little fat to that to slow the digestion of the protein, like a tablespoon of natural peanut butter or walnuts or peanuts or flax oil. You could also try cottage cheese and peanut butter. Cottage cheese is an 80% casein/20% whey protein blend. Casein protein is the slowest digesting protein, and when complimented by peanut butter which will slow it down even more, it takes a long time to digest and therefore your body has a longer supply of protein to keep off catabolism through much of the night.

i have a snack in the evening shortly before i go to bed...

it's a case of calories in/calories burned.. not when you eat them!

lately i've been having reduced or no fat/no sugar added ice cream!

I run, or workout at 5:30 a.m. and cannot eat anything before. I have a snack in the evening and have found that I have more energy for my early morning workouts. Some snacks I have are: oatmeal, toast w/peanut butter, cottage cheese w/whole grain crackers, yogurt and graham crackers, to name a few.

I usually workout at night and crave sugar-free popsicles after my workout (not much nutrition here I know). I also like fresh mozzarella slices as a light snack.

Like Runninggal, I also workout at 5:30am, so like to have a bed time snack. It's usually an apple and low-fat milk, or perhaps low-fat cottage cheese mixed with fresh pineapple.

I remember reading at physiquetransformation.com that if you snack before bed, it shouldn't be anything high-glycemic, like sweets or starch. I think that they recommended fibrous vegetables, like broccoli or carrots, b/c they will cause your metabolism to stay "UP" during the night. It was awhile ago when I read that so I may not have it exactly right!!!

I'll snack before bedtime if I'm hungry - I work out first thing in the morning and if I go to bed hungry, I'm drained when I wake up and my workout suffers. I'll eat whatever's around - fruit and a piece of string cheese, a handful of nuts, a rice cake or two with peanut butter, carrots and hummus...

My wife and I have been loosely following a Zone diet for about 6 months - mainly because we like the food. There is a Zone book titled 'The Formula' which contains a number of great snacks (and meals) for during the day, or late night - often they include fruit, cottage cheese, etc., but there are even some unique ones like peanut butter yogurt and nutty sweet yogurt. They're all quick and simple to make.

We really like the Zone (basically eating balanced 40% carb, 30% protein and 30% fat). We feel healthier and we've both lost weight using it. We also have 2 small children and they love some of the recipes too - especially the breakfasts like strawberry smoothie and Oatmeal w/Blueberries (this last one's from a different Zone recipe book).

I noticed several folks exercise in the early AM like I do. If you follow the logic of the Zone diet - which is all about balancing your diet to avoid insulin spikes - you should have a little nosh in the morning before working out - maybe half a snack portion. I usually just have 1/3 of my breakfast and then eat the rest after my workout. I find this really helps - especially when I'm doing a workout of 1 hour or longer.

PS Even though I know it's probably sinful, I've found I can have a sweet and glass of milk late at night (like 1 Twix bar) and still lose weight. As long as I'm good the rest of the day and exercise regularly.

I read in the book, YOUR BODY'S MANY CRIES FOR WATER, that if you have a cup of sugar-free (no chemicals) yoghart before bedtime, you usually sleep like a baby. Also a full glass of water followed by a pinch of salt helps you to sleep soundly, as well. I usually have an apple with some salt on it before bedtime.

Peter...

I love the recipes in "The Formula".... I have the peanut butter with cocoa and milk and protein powder shake for breakfast every morning... that cheesecake recipe is pretty dang good too...

I am getting ready to start a couple weeks of the Formula Fat Flush meals in the book to get my weightloss kickstarted again.
