I everyone, this is really exciting -- I've been looking for something to challenge the body - and I think this could be it --- I have one quick question -- Just by glancing through the STS information - it looks like quite a diversity of equipment is needed -- different wts, barbells, etc -- I have a ball, 10#, 15# and 25# dumbbells only -- Do you think I can do what I need to in the STS challenge with what I've got? Thanks for your time -- jacqui

Hi, jacqui. I can't answer your question, as the years of working out have passed I've managed to acquire a bit of equipment. I DO think with a lot of imagination and will power you might, might be able to start. I don't have fancy stuff and I adjust when needed, have for years.

I can tell you STS is a terrific program!!!! I'm in mesocycle 2, just finished week 1 and I absolutely love it. I think you'd at least need to get a resistance band and heavy tubing for lat pull downs.

I also acquired much of my fitness equipment over years.

I think that you will at least need a step with risers for leg presses and for incline and flat work. You may want to consider investing in an adjustable dumbbell set. Whether the dumbbells that you currently own will be sufficient can only be determined by taking the 1 rep max test for the STS exercises. Heavy tubing would also be a good investment (you could also get a doorway pullup bar) I believe that you will love STS- my husband and I are loving it.

Do you have a weight bench or step? If neither, the step with the additional slanted risers might be better, so you can use it for leg presses and other step work, and if space is an issue, you can store it against a wall when you are done with your workout. I will say, if you are ok with lying on the floor for prone exercises you could probably do that, and replace the bench incline exercises with incline on the stability ball.

You will need a resistance band, there are alot of exercises with the band, too many to just skip or modify, and the strong tubing is good as a replacement for pullups, and IMO you will need more variety in the dumbells, at least a set of 12's and 20's to fill those gaps, and for me, 8's are very useful.

You don't have to do the program with all of the small weight increases, but it does help to build up your strength. I use wrist weights and weighted gloves to add 1-3 pound increments, so if something is 13 pounds, I'll use my 12 pound db with 1 pound weighted gloves.

You can get away with using dumbbells instead of a barbell, the vest is nice to have, but not a necessity, the ankle weights are not necessary.

So to sum up:
Adjustable bench or step with additional slanted risers
Resistance band - medium tension
Dumbells in 12's and 20's, and 8's would be good too
Strong tubing with over the door attachment for pull ups.
