Endurance rotation advice

Cathlete
Hi guys! I have been doing strength rotations for 12 weeks now (PS, then S&H). I want to shift my focus to endurance now. Tapes like Power Hour, however, really wear me out. I am pretty sure I won't be able to do cardio the days I do Power Hour. If I want to do Power Hour 3x's a week, is 3 days of cardio going to be enough? Should I try a.m. and p.m. workouts for awhile? Any suggestions would be great, thanks in advance!

Hey jillybean :)

Do you have BodyMax? Doing ALL of Bodymax would give you both cardio + an endurance strength workout, and if you did it 2x/week and PH 1x/week you'd have your 3 total body workouts, plus you won't have to fret over missing out on any cardio. :)

Hey Jillybean -

Since you're coming off of a S&H rotation, I was hoping you could tell me what your take on S&H is. It's in transit to me as I type this, and while I'm getting it mainly due to my obsession with having every tape Cathe makes, I'm a little intimidated by it. I fall into that category of gals who want definition, but are afraid to lift heavy and bulk. I put on muscle I guess at a moderate level, depending on how I lift. Right now I'm using PH, and while I like it, I guess I want a little more definition, not sure if I'll achieve that on PH or not since I'm only three weeks into it. How heavy were you lifting? (On PH for example, I'm doing 30/25 for squats and lunges). What were your results with S&H? If you could let me know that'd be great! :) If you'd like to respond here, or email me that would be great!!

Thanks!
Nicole

LAST EDITED ON May-17-02 AT 11:32AM (Est)[p]I would do the same thing as Donna suggested - throw in BodyMax for the extra cardio and do the upper body bit in the evening if you don't have time in the morning. I don't have Powerhour so I actually use Circuit Max in my endurance rotation and do MIS twice a week. Alternatively you could do Powerhour 3 times with 3 x cardio but add 30 - 40 mins of brisk walking in the evening on the days that you do Powerhour. I know it sounds like a silly suggestion but walking in the evening after doing MIS in the morning really works for me.

Hi Jillybean

Power Hour is going to be VERY tough at first just because you haven't been doing endurance. I think after a week or two it won't wipe you out so bad, and you may be able to add in a little cardio as your endurance builds. I don't think it will EVER get easy though!

Hi JillyBean-

You could probably break the tape up into two days.. Break up the Leg, Chest,Back, Leg section into one day. Then do the Shoulder, Bi, Tri, Ab part the other day. Even though it is an endurance workout and the theory is that you "endure" the whole tape, if you are wiped out, your form isn't going to be good enough to do the exercises effectively.

I will do this w/ MIS, and Body Max, if I particularly short on time or energy that week, and the results have been good.

Take care,
Lynn

RE: Hi Jillybean

Thanks for all of the replies you guys (gals)! I did do Power Hour at the end of each week that I did Slow and Heavy. Perhaps that is why it wore me out so. I do have Body Max and would like to include that into my rotation, but Saturday is the only day I could do the whole tape at once since I already wake up at 5:30 and that is when I do a 60 minute workout. But maybe if I do Body Max on Sat and then split it up on Tues. or else do PH in the am and a CTX cardio in the pm, that might work too. Your suggestions were great! I can't wait to build up my endurance and show some definition!

Hi Nicole.
I just wanted to mention that I just finished 2 weeks of S&H and have been getting comments from people at work ("wow--look at your muscles!" and "you must lift weights") for the first time ever. And these new muscles are not big and bulky. They are nice little compact hard things! ;-)
I don't use S&H for my legs. I don't know why. I guess because I work my legs pretty lightly and just can't get out of that habit. But for upper body I have definitely gained strength within the series (IOW I can lift heavier with each S&H tape each time I do them), and seem to be a bit stronger for other tapes as well--as in, I did PS yesterday and could lift a bit heavier for biceps and shoulders, but not as significant a weight difference as with the S&H tapes. (I think because even though PS is strength MOSTLY, it is still more endurance based than S&H).
As a point of reference, I have all of Cathe's strength tapes, and I have never seen results like this, even after 2+ years of using her stuff!

For what it's worth....I would NOT do Power Hour 3x a week. This is one tough tape, and twice a week is plenty with several days in between. You can fit four cardio days in then, and make one of those sessions not as intense. Or you could do one day of MIS and one day of Power Hour.

Also, day and night workouts are not necessary, it sets you up for burnout real quick. What you DON'T want is the feeling that exercise is taking over your life. Please share with us the type of cardio you are doing. The key is efficiency! Get done and get on with your life in one hour or less.

Great advice Honeybunch! I do not want to burn out again! I will do it 2 x's a week and be happy! Thanks again! And congratulations on becoming certified! U go girl!

Good idea Donna!
I find that i need to get in 5-6 days cardio in addition to 2 days strength to maintain my shape. On Cathe's endurance rotation, I've cut back to strength training 2xweek. It only been afew weeks though, so I can't say if it works or not. (Note: I also play tennis, and walk the golf course *9 holes* at least once each per week)
