eBay scare

I have bought and sold things on eBay and currently have some books listed on half.com. This morning I received 3 emails. One was confirmation of a listing for a Honda ATV!! The listing originated in Europe! Obviously not mine. The other 2 emails were confirming my password change and my email address change. I did not authorize those changes at all!

I have contacted their live chat and they are seeming to be very helpful. I also had to change the password for my email account, so that whoever is messing with me cannot access my emails. I changed my paypal password as well as my password for my online banking. I'm now so afraid that someone has access to all sorts of my personal information.

I doubt that this sort of thing happens very often, but please, if you have an eBay account or paypal, go change your passwords. Be careful!! There are obviously some very devious souls out there who have ways to access your accounts!

This happen to me a few years ago. Ebay closed all my accounts and I had to start over. Someone hijacked my computer. I had to install another firewall. Make sure you have a good firewall(I have two). If you don't they can get your new passwords everytime you type it in.

Wow, I don't use E-bay or anything but I just wanted to say that I hope that everything works out for you. I don't understand how people can do things like that. Best of luck to you and let's hope that they didn't get any important info. from you. Maybe you should check with your creditors or do a credit check to make sure that they didn't get any of your info. Good luck and I'm sorry this happened to you.

Hi. I had this happen a couple of months ago. Someone listed all kinds of electronics etc. Ebay caught it before I did. They noticed the large number of listings and the different kinds of listings that popped up under my seller ID. I normally sell books, DVDs clothing etc. when I do sell, which isn't often.

A year before that, someone was able to hack into my PayPal account. They ordered all kinds of stuff which came out of my checking account! It was awful. I contacted Ebay as it was happening. The person first broke in to my Ebay account, changed my password and got to Paypal through Ebay. I just happened to be on the computer as the notification emails were coming in. I immediately contacted Ebay but they were not interested in helping me. I ended up filing a police report and going through my bank to get my money back. I am so scared to use PayPal now. Ebay still has not closed down the original account that the first incident occured under. My credit card/bank info is just sitting out there.

I have all of the security, firewalls etc. I don't know how this all happened and neither do any of the people at Ebay, PayPal or my bank. Keep a close eye on our accounts as suggested earlier in this post!

Edie,

are you sure these emails are legit? I get a ton of those emails, saying my password has been changed or an email adress was added, etc. Dont't ever use any links that come with those emails. Go directly to ebay.com and log in like you normally do and most of the time you will see that no email address was added and nothing has been listed or changed.
They are phishing for information with those emails, if you click on those link, something will download on your computer and they will get all the info they want, or it will ask you to put in personal data, passwords, bank accounts, etc.

I never click any links that come with an email, I always go directly to the website.

I hope everything works out for you!

Carola,

I have gotten maybe 8-10 spoof emails about eBay. I always recognize them and forward them on to eBay. I have never clicked on any links. This time it was absolutely accurate, as when I tried to log into eBay with my password, it wouldn't let me! The eBay chat/help confirmed that these changes had been made and that a false listing had been made with my account. I think it's all fixed now.....I changed my eBay user ID and password and may even close my account altogether.

Wow, Edie, that is really scary, I am glad you realized it so fast though, at least you probably were able to prevent even more damage.

Good luck!

Carola

It's really such a shame that something as cool as eBay has to be exploited and turned into something untrustworthy.

I guess I was really naive. I mean how long did I think it could last before greedy people out there would figure out ways to rip off the rest of us honest folk with scams and bootlegs and questionable tactics.

Why does human behavior always have to sink to the bottom?

Sigh.

Oh well, enough feeling bad! Time to workout!

Laura,

I would bet that if you completely close your account, your information would be safe. You could also just go to the account options and clear out all of your pertinent info (credit card, email,etc.).
