Eating Clean Resource

What is the best resource to find out more about eating clean? I saw a book by Tosca Reno called The Eat Clean Diet. Does she give accurate information in her book? I thought I knew quite a bit about nutrition, but now I realize I have no idea the process that goes into making yogurt, for example. I guess I do know that I should not be eating my little handful of chocolate chips that I eat every day :9

I have this book and found it was too strict for me to follow. My 3 kids would definitly protest(so would the DH). For now I'm just watching calories, etc. and trying to eat healthy as opposed to clean. I have added mor veggies and fruit, doinf ok so far. Eatinf clean to me is a definite life change, I'll change slowly... Hope this helps. Kay

I have the book and for me it was easy to follow. I also have my kids on it most of the time. When my husband is home I'll cook a few things he likes but I'll also have my stuff. I'm slowly changing him to it. Also they have The Eat Clean Diet Cookbook. It has some good stuff in it.

Hmmmm....I am a chocolate addict too!

My reference for eating clean is the Oxygen magazine. Lots of recipes and other stuff...

Good luck!

Eating Clean? Just what does it mean for me?
Well after the loss of my Mother in-law due to cancer I have a new and wise perspective on what I allow in my body. For me it's as much organic as possible. Veggies and fruit. Whole grains and foods free of chemicals and foods free of a surplus of sodium. Foods in their most natural state. I also juice on a regular basis.
A diet that is in harmony with a proper ph/acid balance is also very important.

I drink "Kangen" water that balances the pH/alkaline in the body. It flushes out toxins, gets oxygen to the cells, and makes me look and feel better. I find I have much more energy to do Cathe's moves. Go to www.thewaterdifference.com to get info.

Deb -- Are you related to the John McKay who is selling this machine? Just curious since you both appear to have the same last name.

Have you tried Raw Foods? I like Raw Food for Busy people and Raw Food Real World. Your energy will increase. I also love the Raw Crunch Bars, these are really good.

Yes! He's my husband. How did you meet him?

Deb - I haven't met him. I surfed over to the website you listed and noticed the name. I did watch the videos over there about the machine starring him:)

Wow - I would LOVE to be able to afford an enagic kangen water filtration system. I was considering getting a reverse osmosis filter for my home, but a friend recommended a kangen water filtration system. I think that I'll include it in my next round of home improvements, but it will be a few years before I can afford it. I'll just live vicariously through Deb :=)

Also, was this question meant to be placed in the "Ask Cathe" forum? Seems like it's more of an "open discussion" question. Wasn't sure if this was an oversight by the original poster or if it was truly meant for Cathe. At any rate, you might re-post in Open Discussion to get additional commentary. There are a few posts on raw foods in the OD forum, as well as clean eating and Tosca Reno.

FitatFifty, I hear you. I lost my mom to cancer too and it was then that I made changes towards a more whole, clean eating lifestyle. She thought she was eating healthy by eating "Snackwells" and "low fat, non fat, fat free" "diet" "light" marketed things, yet you must remember when they take the fat and the calories out of foods, they generally put unhealthy chemicals and perservatives and additives to bring back the flavor, and these are can be poisenous to the body.
To start eating clean, just start by reading labels and become aware of what's in your food. Stay away from anything that's "partially hydrogenated, or fully hydrogenated", "msg" or "monosodium glutamate", and "high fructose corn syrup".
Has anyone read "Natural Cures They Don't Want You to Know About" because I think it's really great at helping you clean up your eating habits and your lifestyle habits to be more natural?
Also, I loved reading UltraMetabolism by Dr. Mark Hyman...you can check out the website here, so great! http://www.ultrametabolism.com/
By the way, you can still get some organic dark chocolate chips and nosh on a few every now and then... life needs its indulgences, just not the chemically ones, but the real ones!

Her book is pretty good, except some of her recipes contain 50% or more of the recommended daily maximum of sodium. Maybe that's "clean" in her book, but it's not too healthy.

Some books that don't promote themselves as 'clean eating,' but promote healthy eating (and would fit my defiinition of the term "clean," if I liked that term :D):

Dr. Joel Fuhrman's "Eat for Health" (shows a progressive way of cleaning up ones diet for optimum health): http://www.amazon.com/Eat-Health-We...bs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1237388158&sr=8-1

Brendan Brazier: "The Thrive Diet" (also addresses specific concerns of athletes/trainers such as foods to eat pre- and post-workout) : http://www.amazon.com/Thrive-Diet-B...=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1237388252&sr=1-3

Howard Shapiro "Picture-Perfect Weight Loss" (visually compares what are mostly 'clean' foods to their alternatives, to show how to make better choices): http://www.amazon.com/Shapiros-Pict...bs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1237388426&sr=8-1

There is a fairly new book out called "The Raw Food Revolution Diet" that I think is an excellent resource (I've just started reading it, but have read many other Raw Food books to compare it with). http://www.amazon.com/Raw-Food-Revo...bs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1237388720&sr=8-1

One of the authors runs a raw-food culinary institute, and has been raw for close to 20 years. The other two are registered dieticians who provide the nutritional information and background that is often lacking in other raw-food books.

Another very comprehensive book on the topic is "The Life Food Factor" http://www.amazon.com/Live-Food-Fac...=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1237389012&sr=1-1 (I have an earlier edition, but this 2009 edition might be even better).

She thought she was eating healthy by eating "Snackwells" and "low fat, non fat, fat free" "diet" "light" marketed things...

This is the mindset of many American people, unfortunately. I am the only person in my family (both sides) and circle of friends that eats clean. Everyone with whom I associate seems to have difficulty understanding that processed foods have no place in a healthy diet.

complik8ted, I sooooo agree....I actually try to help those I come in contact with in my line of work to better understand what it means to eat "healthy" as opposed to dieting, and you would be surprised how many people are so lost.
Kathryn, thank you for posting the raw food diet revolution...I am going to look into that one.
I am currently reading Eating Well for Optimum Health by Dr. Andrew Weil, and it's very informative!
