I workout about 2 hours after dinner and 2 hours before bedtime. Is is necessary to always eat something after a weight workout? If so, what kinds of things would be good to eat?
Thanks!=)
As always, I feel compelled to point out that I am not an expert. But from what I have read, if I were you, I'd eat a light dinner and drink a protein shake (no carbs, mixed with water) after my workout. Jeanne
I would think that you would have adequate protein in your system from your earlier meal to cover the muscle repair and rebuild your body needs. It takes time for your body to utilize the nutrients in the foods you eat. Once it is out of the stomach you can work out with out affecting digestion, particularly if you're just strength training. You, of course, must experiment to see what works for you!
There's plenty of research to support eating something after a workout. Since your workout is late in the day, it doesn't have to be much. As to what? From Liz Applegate's new sports nutrition book "Eat Smart, Play Hard":
1) liquid to rehydrate
2) carbs to restore muscle glycogen
3) a little protein to carry the glycogen to your muscles & repair muscle tissue
4) anti-oxidants to fight tissue damage
So the smoothie idea is good, but it should be carb rich. The Applegate gives lots of examples.
Let me ask you this: Are you hungry after you work out? If you are, you should eat. But if you aren't hungry, don't, because eating late in the evening can upset your sleep. Since you are working out 2 hours after your dinner, the amino acids necessary to repair your muscles will be present in your blood stream. Americans eat way too much protein, averaging 99 grams a day. The average woman requires about 44 grams per day.To get an idea of how much you need multiply your body wieght by .8. I know Catheites probabley require more, but inadequate protein in the diet is rarely a problem and we store glycogen (carboyhdrate) so unless you are really training hard, it's not necessary to top off your dinner. If you're hungry or shaky, eat but if you don't really feel like eating, don't. Listen to your body!
