ear mites!

I think my Vlad has ear-buggies:mad: He was shaking his head alot the day before yest, and I didn't see him yest. I just got home today and his head is shaking and ears are flapping. I looked inside and the one ear is pink and scaly with dried blood/goo in the ear canal. From previous dogs, I am pretty sure its mites. The vet is booked til Monday evening, as it isn't an emergency. I cleared his ear out with Qtips and warm water best as I could. Anybody have any good at-home treatments til we see the vet? Or at least a good way to keep the itchies at bay? I'm not too concerned about the cat getting them because they normally don't hang out together.

Thanks,
Nan

Because I do not wish to work at work today, I have located this info on google:

Any natural oil will block the breathing pores of mites and kill them. A half ounce of almond oil and vitamin E mixture is one the most useful home remedies for ear mites. It works in a manner similar to the vinegar-water solution. Just pour a few drops in both the ears. The dog will shake his head. You can then clean the ear with a cotton swab.

Water is not good to clean out ears: it can cause problems from the ears staying humid. Hydrogen Peroxide is better (though it fizzes, and doggie might not like that). It dries out. Olive oil is another thing you can try (some natural ear remedies contain it).

If dogs are similar to cats, you put the liquid in the ears, rub the base of the ear so it works in a bit (right where their earlobe would be, if they had one like ours!), then wipe out gently with a cotton swab (don't go in too far, and PULL rather than push). I think it's easier to cause some damage with Q-tips than with the cotton swabs.

I'd do a web search on "ear mite remedies" if I were you. There may be some combo of essential oils that might work.

Nan - Mineral oil works great! I have used that in combination with Tresaderm (what your vet will most likely give you). Hate those mites!

Clarify - I didn't put water in his ears, just dampened the Qtips a bit to get the gunk to stick to them. I will try a bit of olive oil and see if the help. He already doesn't seem to be shaking as much. The goo was probably bugging him as well as the buggies.

Hate those blasted things! I'm going to write down the home remedies suggested. Another ? ~ is there a control method for dogs? My cats get REVOLUTION which is fleas, ticks, worms, and ear mites back of neck treatment drops. I wonder if they have it for dogs?
