DVD ROT! SNM?

Hi SNM -

There is a lot of talk about DVD ROT these days. Here is a link talking about DVD Rot:

http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2003/01/31/1043804519345.html

I won't quote the entire article but here are a few highlights: "The failures are a combination of corrosion - known as "DVD rot" - and delamination, where the layers of the disc separate. Symptoms of the rot include picture break-up and freezing at a specific place on the disk. The main cause is believed to be poorly designed cases. Delamination shows up as a coffee-like stain that prevents the disc from playing."

I find this disturbing because I have 12 Cathe DVD's. I'm concerned that if this would happen to me later on down the road...would SNM be able to issue me a replacement DVD?

Thanks for any help you can provide....

I've really never seen this. We have had DVDs that are 4 years old now and haven't had any such problems.

"Just so you know, DVDs do degrade over time as do VHS tapes."

Hi Beth - I know but I would hope DVD's would last longer than what the article suggests, Especially my Cathe DVD's....http://www.click-smilies.de/sammlung0903/mittelgrosse/medium-smiley-039.gif

Thanks for the reply SNM. If this would happen...would it be possible to get a replacement? From what I understand, Cathe DVD's come with a lifetime guarentee. Thanks again for answering my question.

I know that it's great that SNM will replace your DVDs if it ever stop working, but...

life does not come with guarantees. Sometimes you have to just take a chance. And stop worrying about 'something' that could & might happen. I have bought tapes that 'went bad', CD that does not work any more, eggs that broke in the carton, etc. Now, do you expect Disney/MGM/Universal Studios to replace your DVDs if it ever stop working? I don't know why anybody would hold SNM to a higher standard than the 'big guns' in the movie industry...

Yes, I would. If the guarantee is there when you purchase, yes.

Besides, those $$$$ "chances" are well worth demanding those guarantees.

I buy from SNM with the assurance that I will get a quality product backed by their guarantee, as I am pretty sure most people in the forum do.

I'm not too worried. Granted the technology is still fairly new, but from what I understood about the article, the number of defective DVD's known to have rot is extremely small, between 1 and 10%. That's not enough to prevent me from buying this format, which is far better than VHS by any stretch!
