Drill Max and space to workout

workingToBeFit

Cathlete
Hi all,

I have been itching to get Drill Max as I love Cathe's circuits that I already have - like boot camp, which I adore. Anyway in watching the drill max previews and reading reviews, I am wondering if my space to workout will be problem. For example, in the walking lunges, it looks like great fun, but I can't fit 4 big walking lunges across my room like Cathe does. I could probably do 1 or maybe 2 going 1 direction. There are other parts of the DVD also which seem to need some more space than is typical. I also don't have a wall I can do the wall-based portion with.

Has anyone had this problem and solved it ok? I did a search and couldn't find this topic, I'm sorry if I am repeating a past topic though.

I own Drill Max, and space is an issue for me too. The walking lunges are an issue, as well as the drill (maybe #4? or 5?) with the forward bounding and jumps.

As for the walking lunges, I have issues with these that go far beyond not having space. Lunges give me knee pain, and I don't have good enough balance to get the footing down. So instead, I just modify standing in one spot (facing Cathe, of course).

Same for the forward bounding -- I just focus on jumping high, and stay in one spot on the floor.

I would not let space issues keep you from getting this one -- it's a good one!

Can you make a 'corridor' in your workout area for the walking lunges? My space isn't that large, either, but I can clear a 'runway' into another space that allows me to do them.

As for the bounds and skips, you could do two forward and two backward instead of 4 in one direction (so you don't have to take time to turn around, and can work the muscles in a different way). Just start each set on alternating legs so one leg doesn't lead all the time.

Katie, thanks so much! This is very helpful. I am going to order it in a minute!

Kathryn, this is great! Thanks, I never thought of making a corridor. There actually is a way I can go diagonally out of the workout space into another room. I am so glad you pointed that out. The more I think about this I also think I can use a wall that's in an adjacent space for the wall part. I may not be right in front of the TV all the time, but that's ok. I am going to order it and another video right after I finish typing this.

The space modification I make for the bounding drill (drill #5) is to bound around my step. It's a little more turning than Cathe does (so more pivoting for my knees) but it works in a small space.

I love this w/o and am tight on space, too. I either do the walking lunges in place facing the tv or just do 3 instead of 4 - its all I have room for, without moving a bunch of toys out of my sons play space. I also don't have a wall, but we have an armoire downstairs that has flat doors the whole way down (no shelves) so I use that for my wall. Instead of the ball squats maybe you can just do them freestanding in the middle of the room? The one legged ones like that are tough!! For the forward bounding, I just go 2 long and high one way and turn and do 2 long and high the other way, or I go in circles, which can be fun, too. Just change the inside leg every trip around the room to keep the work even.

Hey thank you for the last two posts! I can picture these adaptations for drill max. It should be here in a few days so I can try all this out.

You've already gotten lots of great answers for this, but I just wanted to say I'm another one with a rather small space and I do the jumping higher thing. I also end up just turning more often on the bounding around part. The first time I did Drill Max, when I had trouble with the space or just with following what she was doing, I just stayed in one spot doing big jumps or whatever until she got back to something I could join. Where there's a will there's a way!

Hi Ann,

Drill Max is my least favorite of Cathe's last series simply because I don't have the space or a free wall to use. My workout room does not have a door to even close to make a free wall.

I love the music and the concept of Drill Max. Unfortunately, I do not have the space to enjoy its benefits.
