Don't pump gas on May 15th!

I got this in my e-mail. Perhaps we could try to do this.

Will this help are gas situation? Maybe, but we won't know unless we try.

Don't pump gas on MAY 15th!

In April 1997, there was a "gas out" conducted nationwide in protest of gas prices. Gasoline prices dropped 30 cents a gallon overnight.

On May 15th 2007, all internet users please do not go to a gas station in protest of high gas prices. Gas is now over $3.00 a gallon in most places.

There are 73,000,000+ American members currently on the internet network, and the average car takes about 30 to 50 dollars to fill up.

If all users would not pump gas on the 15th, it would take $2,292,000,000.00 (that's almost 3 BILLION) out of the oil companies pockets for just one day, so please do not go to the gas station on May 15th. Lets put a dent in the Middle Eastern oil industry for at least one day.

If you agree resend this to all your contact list. With it saying, ''Don't pump gas on May 15th"

Janie

The idea is to die young as late as possible.

Ahem. I'm slipping on my fire retardant clothing in preparation for flaming. It would make a whole lot more sense if people would cut down needless trips and buy smaller, fuel efficient automobiles.

Amen, Robin!

These "gas-outs" will do absolutely NOTHING for gas prices because people will not cut down on their driving, and therefore will not be using any less gas. They'll all have to buy gas again eventually, whether it's filling up the day before the gas-out, or waiting until the day after, or whatever.

See what Snopes has to say about these ridiculous "gas-outs"...

LOL!!! Your fingers are faster than mine!

I would love to cut down on needless trips.
I am having real difficulty figuring out just which ones those are.

Also if I could find a smaller, more fuel efficient car that could fit 3 carseats plus stroller and sport gear, that would be nice too.

:)

Even a minivan could cut down on gas--it's the enormous suv's that are ridiculous. Not to mention the Hummers I see people driving. Um, unless you're in Iraq or some other desert land, there is NO NEED to be driving a car like that.

Yes there is. When other crazies on the road are driving them, as well as the folks in tractor trailers (freight belongs on the rails, not the road!), I need something behemoth to protect myself in case they decide to collide with me because they are driving like or moron or worse yet, they are drunk. I'm thinking my next vehicle will be something Mad Max with large spikes on the hubcaps. Of course, I wouldn't want Mel Gibson at the helm. Heh-hmmmm

I have to agree with you. I drive a Jeep Liberty, and there is no way I would drive anything smaller. Partly because I couldn't fit the kid related stuff in anything smaller, and partly because I feel safer in it. When I see those "smart cars" I cringe and all I can think of is how would one survive an accident. I agree that cutting down on number off trips and carpooling and better planning is the answer...not smaller cars. In my case a smaller car would be more trips, and potentially more emissions than my SUV getting everything done in one trip. We can only do so much as the consumer. The government and the manufactures need to come out with better fuel alternatives and more efficient vehicles. They say that they are restricted by cost...because it would be too expensive. Well believe me, if we had no other choice, we would pay it no matter how much it costs.

I agree with what all of you mentioned. I just saw this email today in my inbox and thought the same thing, but the fact someone decided to hit forward makes me think that even if they don't know it's useless at least they are aware that the gas situation is starting to affect *all* of us.

Did any of you got the one where they said to turn off all the lights and appliances in your home at 7pm for 7 minutes? An old physics professor of mine was laughing at that one the other day. Basically, when it's 7pm in Puerto Rico, it's 6pm in Chicago, 4pm in California, etc. It won't be 7pm at the same time. :7 We're better off saving energy every single day by trying to turn off appliances when we don't use them, use the sun to dry out our clothes, wash the dishes by hand, change the 100W light bulbs to daylight ones that are about 25W or less, etc. At least these emails get people to talk about these issues.

One of the "think tanks' did an environmental comparism of BUILDING a hummer versus one of the electric cars.

The electric car lost, the production left more of an environmental footprint.

Of course I'm sure that the study was hosted someone who funds research that supports a larger vehicle.

I drive a minivan I drive the kids around, there's also trips when I'm by myself and a small car would be better. But then I couldn't load people and gear when we were going to do that. Who can afford a car for every purpose?

Years ago someone started an environmental crusade with the question "What would Jesus drive?" Jay Leno shut them all up with a great answer.

"He was a carpenter, he'd drive a pick up truck"

Oh for pete's sake, the automobile industry could come up with a large SUV that meets all of you security conscious people's requirement that has an engine which only needs 1/3 or 1/2 of the gas the "regular" ones need.

We can fly men to the moon (and further) and back, and we can't come up with a more environmentally sound vehicle. I don't think so. It's just that the oil companies have no interest in that and their lobbyists are doing a fine job!

On a different note though, SUVs have the worst track record for automobile accidents and a lot of times the "smaller" cars by far outperform them in safety rating.

I'll stick to my Mini Cooper. While the rest of the world is out there under going the battle of the big trucks, I'll just drive under y'all and go on my merry way...

Seriously though - I have driven big SUV's (I had a Yukon Denali for several years), but I actually feel safer in my Mini because I have much greater manuaverability. I can much more easily avoid an accident in the first place - and if I have to swerve suddenly, my car is not going to flip over.

Of course, that being said, our other car is a GMC Envoy - a mid sized SUV. And we have that because we do hike, run, and cart our kids and dogs with us many places...

Man, on the one hand I love really small, fairly fuel efficient Honda Accord coupe but on the other hand I can understand wanting something bigger just be seen.

I drive 80+ miles round trip each day on the interstates in Atlanta and I must say that it is hard to be seen. It makes me want to go buy some big honking something simply to feel safe. x(

Amen! :) I love my Honda Civic, I feel completely safe in it, I get 38 mpg, and wouldn't trade it for the world. :D

Okay no filling up on the 15th. But let me tell you what, if I have to use the bathroom that day (a very high possibility) I sure as heck am going to use more than one flimsy square of toilet paper!!:7
Ick, what was Ms.Crow thinking when she said that? Can you imagine what would end up all over your hand???? Ickkkyyy.

Just popping in to say "I don't think anyone could ever flame janie - no matter what she said". You're just so sweet Janie!!

I'm happy to not fill up for the rest of the year!!! (unfortunately this is not realistic - we plan on limiting trips!)

Price of gas a gallon in the UK $8+. Only way for price of petrol is UP!!! Iraq, etc plus demand from China and India is tightening world supplies. $3 a gallon the USA have been mollycoddled for years. Its getting more scarse. No way is this stuff coming down. Its linked to the geo-political going ons in the world. The USA does not control the world oil supply the Middle-East does.

There are some hybrids that are that big, like the Ford something or other (I know it's usually in a yellow color, but I can't remember the name of the vehicle)?
