Don't always "get" these challenges

RE: Don't always

The great thing about this forum is that we are not just average people who workout daily. We are a very fit crowd and a highly motiviated crowd and we do extreme things because we are so fit and our bodies can handle it. When someone is doing something 2 or 3 times in a row it is just to kick them in the pants now and then. I think that is great. We all workout so much that we need that excitement and feeling of accomplishment now and then. As far as the eating thing, I think we all struggle with that and we do fall off the wagon and that is okay, we just get back on and try again. I think that a lot of us, including me, are obsessed with our workouts and our food and that is why this forum is so dang important to talk about all of our issues and accomplishments. I think is great that we can also voice our opinions and know that we will have an interesting thread and know we can come back and still have that support from everyone. Just my thoughts.:)

RE: Don't always

I love this place and I love this thread! Is it possible to agree with you all?

There was a day when I could have done ME twice, but it never occured to me to try. Maybe someday I will get there again and I love the idea that people come up with these crazy (in a good way) challenges because it is what challenges them, and me in an odd way....though right now it would kill me but that's another story.

On the flip side, I see these same wack-a-do's (I mean that in a loving way) being the first gals who encourage the newbies, or the people confessing they have fallen off the fitness wagons, have weight to lose...like me. No fitness superiority attitude from any of them that I can see.

I love that no matter where you are in your fitness goals this is a place of love (yes, I think there is genuine love here), knowledge, encouragement and chick chat, and I thank you ALL:p

RE: Don't always

Compared to many of you, I'm a fairly moderate exerciser, but I'm extreme compared to many of my friends. I do believe that it's to each his/her own. Each of us is completely different. I have a friend who runs ultramarathons, and thinks a good day's run is 80 miles (I am not exaggerating in the least - he does this at least twice a week). And he's in his 50's. He's just built for running and is very high energy. And he rarely gets injured.

I can do a 12k, and would probably be fine for a 1/2 marathon with proper training, but I really doubt that given my body type I could run a full marathon. I can, and have done 100 mile bike rides and have climbed many mountains. I think nothing of 2 hour workouts, but if my body says no, I don't do it. As everyone else has said - it's all in listening to your body.

As for the food challenges - I'd doing a sugar challenge on a different board, and while I have not been perfect, it has made me much more aware of the amount of sugar I'm eating and I do plan to continue reading labels more carefully.

So, when it comes to any challenge - if you want to and think you can - go for it. If not, well, don't.

RE: Don't always

Good thread!

I would just add that I think it also has to do with the psychological reasons behind going to extremes. If someone pushes herself to the edge for truly healthy reasons and is not doing any damage to her body as a result, that's fine. But if someone is doing it because she is obsessive, addictive, or feels that she must always do that in order to measure up (in other words, if you are ME! :) ) then I think that's a problem. The end result of being in fantastic shape doesn't necessarily mean that the path there was a healthy or positive one.

Also, for some people moderation is the success. As I said above, I tend to be obsessive, addicitve, guilty and given to bouts of self-flagellation. I've been the person pushing herself to exercise beyond reason, obsessed with fat, sugar, salt. I don't care to be that anymore; I know I can go to extremes, so for me, and I am sure others, moderation is the success.

Please note that I am not referencing anyone specific person on this board!! :)

I like this statement. So often when people ask questions and seek advice, I always ask for more information because that really affects my answer. Even with additional information some people have very different definitions of fat, bulk, clean eating, advanced level of exercise, training, etc... With the expansion of Cathe's business, her customer base has grown and so has the fitness knowledge of the people joining in on the discussions. I don't read many of the challenges because my fitness routine is fitted for my needs, but I think it is ok to have them. I would just encourage a good open discussion of these challenges to include all pertinent information. Ultimately, everyone is responsible for their choices, this is your health. Consider the source of information gained on the internet and do some balanced research.

Thanks for bringing this topic up for discussion. It is good to open this subject up and exchange ideas. I didn't take this thread as singling out anyone for a roast. I would hate to take the low road (jerry springer way :-( ) on this topic.

RE: Don't always

let me be serious here b/c I do in fact find this to be an important topic. I do agree that we are indeed a very fit, above the norm crowd. We are also a very competitive crowd (maybe just with ourselves) to some degree. I believe also that it is important to challenge ourselves to grow and push our body through plateaus to obtain even greater fitness gains.

However, with that being said, as an overly educated fitness crowd, I would reasonably expect people on here to know how to SMARTLY go about taking on challenges, etc. If you want to do BC twice as a personal goal and know your body can handle it, then more power to you. I know this is trite, but listening to your body is crucial.

The kicker is, and this is just my opinion, that I find a lot of people on here to be taking on challenges for the sheer delight of saying I did whatever workout X times to be wowed by the crowd and posted for that reason. Don't just do a workout 2 and 3 times just for the hell of it. Have a purpose other than I was bored and wanted to see if it would work. Have a specific goal such as I want to get to x point by ___ and doing this for me entailed doing X.

Well, you all get my drift. I think to some degree Cathe has really created some monsters. Obviously, it is in each and every person's individual hands to determine what is best for THEM. I hope you all make the right choice with that information.
