Donate Blood

Hey everyone!!! I just got back from donating a pint of blood, and I'd like to urge you all to go. I go every 6 or 8 weeks. If we can all help someone with just 20 or 30 mins of our time, it would be wonderful. For those who are afraid of needles, it doesn't hurt, it just pinches for a second. Please consider it!!!

Nan

That is so wonderful of you to donate blood with such regularity. I rarely do it because it bothers me. I don't mind getting shots but having a needle hanging out in my arm makes me very squeemish. I realize it's a small price to pay but somehow it still keeps me from doing the right thing....*hangs head in shame* :-(

GOOD FOR YOU NAN!! I'm so happy that you do that. I wish I could - every time I go (and I've tried close to a dozen times) they tell me not to come back because I have "rolling veins" - they poke me for like 30 minutes, leave me looking like a pin cushion, and politely ask me to leave and not try again. :( Even when I've needed to have my blood drawn for tests where the techs can use infant sized needles, they get so frustrated! I'm glad to know you do that - thank you.

I'll be walking the Komen 3-day (60 miles) the week after Cathe's RT. To view my webpage go to: https://www.kintera.org/faf/donorReg/donorPledge.asp?ievent=202302&supid=166016627

I used to give as often as I could, don't ask but for some reason I actually like giving blood. My work place has blood drives quite often and I would always donate but then one of the medicines I am on was added to the "list" that if you take it you can't give. They say I can stop taking it for a week before hand but it became too much to try & work around it. I wish I could still give more often b/c it is such an easy way to help out others.

Thanks for post this Nan. I'm also a regular donor. (I do it for the cookies - LOL) I know several other folks around here are regular blood donors and even platlet donors. I agree. It's something healthy, fit, and educated crowd people should make every effort to do. An hour of your time can make a big difference in another person's life.

i def. donate when i can. sometimes my iron is below and they won't let me but i still get in a good 2-3 times a year when my iron levels are good.my husband goes on that machine (takes 30 mins)that takes red blood cells. they say it can help up to 4-6 cancer patients,as well as use it for transfusions. you have to be a certain size height/weight and healthy to do it but if somebody has a husband that can, they really can use that too.

that's fantastic!! i volunteer at blood drives in my neighborhood everytime they have one. i am unable to donate b/c i'm a cancer survivor, but i am happy to help handing out cookies and juice, and holding some hands if i can!!

Nan, I've tried several times, but they've never allowed me to donate blood. :( They say my blood pressure is "low", but my doc says it's just on the low end of normal. Thank you and all the others who donate! :D

ETA: I doubt a pint would hurt, but I guess they can't take the risk of liability if I faint and hit my head or something.

I use to donate regularly before my cancer. I should ask my doctor if and when I can donate again.

Edited to add:

A little trip around google.com has revealed that because I was treated with chemotherapy, I cannot give blood anymore. How sad, :( I use to like giving blood. It made me feel responsible.

I am also a regular donor (when I'm not training for an endurance event). In fact, I just gave a pint on Tuesday! The process is super easy and I think the finger prick they do beforehand hurts worse than the actual needle stick. Anyone who is able to give should give - it's a great way to save lives!

I donated blood once in my life - in high school!

I loved doing this. I was quite tired for the rest of the day, and I remember sleeping a lot.

But in the end, I hope I saved a life.

I am also an organ donor on my license. God forbid I die young, I would love to give my healthy organs to someone else who could survive.

I am always looking to help out others. That is one of my many missions in life.

:)

I used to donate all the time but a few years ago they started deferring people who lived in Germany in the early 80's because of CMV. I was just a kid when we lived there (dad was in Army there) so now I can't donate. I call all the time to see if I finally can again but they keep saying no. They said until they can come up with a test to test the blood for it, then they have to defer me. I really wish I could especially for the shortage for our troops. Anyone who can, I hope you do. Like others said, the prick on your finger hurts worse than the needle in your arm!

I DO donate blood to our church when they have a blood drive there. I don't do much volunteering (and feel quite guilty about it), but this is one small way that I feel like I'm helping others. You're right, it doesn't hurt too much and it only takes about an hour. Please try to give. Laura

I gave blood yesterday that is going to be directed to a friend who is having surgery next week. But I brought friends since Indiana is in a huge blood shortage right now.

I did get a laugh yesterday when the technician insisted on weighing me (even when I insisted that I weighed way more than 110...more like 125). But he said that since my BP was low (100/60) and my RHR was 58 that he felt he needed to check! Well that made my day!
