Doctors Orders

I don't post very often and I am still pretty new to Cathe's workouts, I have only begun three exercising seriously three months ago and started Cathes videos for only a month and a half but I love them and look forward to getting more.
The question I have is this, My doctor says I cannot miss not even one day of exercising due to my illness, I have both Fibromyalgia and scoliosis in my lower back, but thanks to Cathe my pain is almost gone, now I just need an Idea of an everyday routine, and also should I eat something before working out or wait till after?

Not Cathe, but re eating, I believe you should have a meal about 2 to 3 hours before you exercise, depending on the size of the meal, or a snack 1 hour before. Eat a mix of carbs and protein as soon as you can afterwards, especially if you have been doing strength work (weights).

I don't know anything about your illness, but I would count brisk walking as exercise, so I wouldn't think that you have to do an intense workout every single day. Instead, vary your exercise between light intensity (such as walking), more intense cardio (eg one of Cathe's cardio videos), and strength training (eg one of Cathe's weights videos). And don't forget to include some stretching.

Whatever you do, I would check with your doctor (as I'm sure you are doing).

Take care!
Sharon.

You also might want to check out some of the rotations in the rotations forum. That way you have a plan for the month on what type of exercise and videos you'll be doing. If it is important to do something everyday, then when a day is marked off you could go for a walk or a bike ride or whatever else you felt like doing that was low intensity. I agree that you should run this by your physician to make sure he/she is onboard.

As for eating, I would think that depends on when you will be working out. I work out first thing in the morning and don't eat anything beforehand. Maybe some juice if I feel I need the spurt. I have a protein shake right afterward and generally have a snack 2-3 hours later. If you work out later, just make sure you've given yourself some time between a meal and working out so you don't feel bogged down or get nauseous.

That is great advice thank you. I have been drinking some orange juice along with the medication the doctor gave me. is it ok to eat an energy bar before exercising? I do feel tons better since I have been using Cathes tapes. even the doctor likes the improvement on my health he says this is the first time he has seen color in my cheeks since I got sick. Thank you Cathe!! and thank you all for your great advice. I look forward to feeling even better since I have only just begun.

I don't imagine that an energy bar would be too much. If it felt like too much, you could always eat half along with your juice beforehand and then have the other half afterward. I think you might need to experiment with what works best for you. Congratulations on the improvement in your health. What a wonderful gift you have given yourself.

Hi Leslie,
I'd echo what the others have said. I'd think that if you are listening to your body (& your Dr.! ;))that you'll be OK. With that said, be careful of doing too much... You *can* get too much of a good thing!;)
I think that the advice you rec'd regarding walking and stretching is worth listening to!
Michele

PS. I exercise @ 5am and eat an energy bar right before exercising and I do fine. Eating or not eating before exercise is one of those YMMV kinds of things.
