Do you think my neighbors would mind.........

if I jumped rope in my driveway at about 6:30 am? Now that the weather is cooling I'd like to get some outdoor exercise in before it's TOO cool, & I do enjoy jumping rope. Do you think it's too noisy?

Or do you think I shouldn't care b/c they've woken me before 7 am before? }(

I'd give it a go. What kind of surface is your driveway?

I jump outside on our deck and it isn't terribly loud. Besides, since it's getting cooler at night, people probably won't have their windows open.

Honestly, I don't think 6:30 am is that bad on a weekday. I would give it a go. I also agree that jumping rope isn't terribly noisy either.

My upstairs neighbor constantly vacuums at 11:30 at night or later so I never feel too bad if make any noise in the early A.M.:)

It's concrete. My only worry is that they have 2 babies--I think one is about 18 mos. & the other is maybe 3 YO. I don't know them well enough yet to know where their bedrooms are situated. I'm not a mom but I know how pi$$ed overtired moms get when their kids are woken by an inconsiderate neighbor.

I wish my driveway was on the other side of the house. Old retired guy lives there who's out working in his garage ever morning at the crack of dawn. He's really the strangest fella--he scrubs his car from top to bottom EVERY SINGLE DAY. I haven't cleaned my car since August 2006. :7

Are you sure you want to jump on concrete?

One solution would be to buy one of those plyo boards (basically a raised plywoood surface) or even just a sheet of plywood, and move it to someplace in your backyard that might not disturb your neighbors so much.

At any rate, the noise wouldn't be as bad as when the roofers working on my neighbors house started work at around that time. Then when I requested that she ask them to start a bit later, they tried to be more quiet...but that occasional 'bang' of a hammer or nail gun was just enough to wake me, and to rewake me each time I started to drift back to sleep!

Why don't you just bake them a plate of cookies and take them over and ask them? Tell them what you plan to do and say you were hoping their kids' rooms are somewhere other than where you might wake them in the morning. I'd not be terribly concerned about the adults, but the kids - maybe. I get up early in the morning to w/o because it's the only time I can do it uninterrupted by the kids - so if someone woke them during my w/o time I'd be quite unhappy. It couldn't hurt to be neighborly and ask.

I agree w/ Lorrie - let them know ahead of time. It's one thing to know your neighbor is jumping rope outside and another to find out the hard way your neighbor is jumping rope outside. It sounds silly but they may make some minor adjustments like making sure windows are closed or no animals in the room (jumping rope leads to barking dog leads to crying child). I jump rope on my back porch while my kids were sleeping and it didn't wake them.

Good Luck

You should definitely ask them if they mind. I've done apartment living my entire life, so maybe I'm a bit jaded from all of the crazy neighbors that I have had. If anything, they will appreciate your courtesy. Plus, any noise is considered loud at 6:30 a.m.!!! :p

OK, I'll ask next time I see them. I'm not baking them cookies though--I do want them to like me, after all. :+

Kathryn, my last house was right between a bus stop, a train station, the fire department & the rescue squad. I can't begin to tell you how hard it's been adjusting to a quiet neighborhood! Oddly enough it's b/c it's so quiet that even the slightest noise sounds like a nucular (sorry, couldn't resist) bomb exploding. Although it is awfully nice to hear birds & crickets again. :)

But I can see how the sound of a nail gun early in the am might be a bit disturbing......:p

You could also just do it. I'm sure they won't hesitate to tell you if it bothers you. I seriously doubt it will be loud enough to wake babies up anyway. I know what you mean though about wanting to get outside before the cold sets in. I like running at our park, but when it gets cold I can't go running. I always end up with bronchitis if I do!

:)

I would ask. It's not a one-time roofing project but something you plan to do on a regular basis.

People seem to have far fewer inhibitions about making noise at all hours of the day. I have a neighbor who ran his leaf blower for an hour at 7 am one morning. I would like to see local ordinances banning the use of large of equipment at certain hours, perhaps on certain days.

PS...Had to chuckle over nucular. That drives me BONKERS!

Hmmmm on the grass--I'd briefly considered it but Max would likely be out there w/me & I don't want to hurt him. On the other hand it would be quieter & easier on the knees. Maybe I'll give it a shot tomorrow, thanks for the advice guys! :)

I also wouldn't jump on concrete. Very bad for your joints. Do you have a deck you could jump on or like someone else said, a platform?

>I also wouldn't jump on concrete. Very bad for your joints.

I have to third this response. Jumping on concrete is horrible for your feet, joints, etc... I was very active in a clogging group up until recently and I know from experience that anytime we had a gig on concrete, we were dying the next day. There is no cushion and the impact goes right up your spine and killed my back. It is just so bad for you. Even some foam puzzle mats would make a huge difference and probably cut down on the sound a little.

Concrete probably isn't entirely accurate, it's blacktop, not a good surface but I think a bit softer than concrete.

My stupid basement floor is concrete & I've been working out down there since I moved in July. Can't wait for those puzzle mats! :)
