Do you or have you exercised at work?

Do any of you exercise at work on your lunch? I am trying to get back into my Cathe routine and am really struggling. I tried the morning thing and it did not work. I used to work out in the evening when I got home from work. But lately I end up talking myself out of it or I'm too tired (too many excuses I know) and I never do it. Well I got a new computer at work that has a DVD player/writer in it and was thinking maybe I could bring a couple workouts here and do it on my lunch hour. Here are the pros and cons I've thought of please add to my list if you want.

Pro:
My exercise will be done for the day (evenings are free)
I'm not as tired in the afternoon so I'm more likely to do it.

Cons:
Having to change clothes and getting pretty sweaty
My office door will shut and has a keyed lock but I don't know where the key is.
Being limited on equipment and I can't really do a full strength workout (I have an old step that I could bring and a band to use for any weight section)
My co-workers will probably try to stand outside my window to see what I'm doing.

I know that I've got more cons than pros but if the one pro is that I'll actually do it would that outweigh the cons?

Advice please.
K

I've gone for walks during my lunch break, but I've never done sweaty exercise at work. Just wouldn't work out, with having no access to a shower.

Hey K,

As long as it's cool with your supervisor, I say give it a try. Does your place of employment have locker rooms/showers that you could freshen up in after?

I'm fortunate to work in a place with a pretty nice fitness center. Quite a few of my co-workers workout there at some point during the day. It is nice to be able to just come home some days knowing that you already did your workout. :)

I used to teach lunchtime classes at the gym and was amazed and inspired by the amount of women who would come and workout hard on their lunch break. They'd leave the fitness room, wipe down, powder up and be on their way looking fresh and ready for whatever the afternoon would bring them. It definitely can be done:)

Take Care
Laurie :)

I think working out at work during your lunch hour is a wonderful idea!! I am guessing that the pros far outweight the cons. I would bring workout clothes and some of those wet wipes or some dove facial wipes to clean up with after working out. I would get a portable fan to blow on you while you exercise to cut down on sweating.

There are many Cathe workouts that are perfect for limited space and equipment:
KPC
High Step Trainning advance
Cardio kicks
Maximum Intensity Cardio
Low Max
Bootcamp (can be done with one set of handweights)
Circuit Max (can also be done with 1 set of handweights)
Kick max
Really any of the Cathe workouts can be modified to use less equipment.

Turbo Jam max results:
Fat blaster (30 minutes, no equipment needed)
Cardio party 3 (no equipment needed)
T3 would be good with a SUPER hard band.

You could do a Yoga workout too...

The possibilities are endless!

I agree, I think I would give it a try with workouts that don't require equipment, and if that feels ok, start bringing some stuff in. You can do loads with bands and tubing and a step.

BTW, maybe you can hang a do-not-disturb sign on the door and possibly bring in a screen or something to cover your window so you don't feel so self-conscious?

Good luck!

K,

I workout on my lunch hour. I keep videos and hand weights in my locker. I eat while I work and then at lunch I exercise. It actually gives me more energy to finish out my day. I work 12 hour shifts and if I didn't workout at work I wouldn't get my exercise in for the day. I never want to miss a workout because it makes me feel too good.

I'm going to go thru my workouts tonight and figure out which to bring. We have only about 6 people in this office (mainly men) and it's pretty casual and relaxed. We usually don't shut our office doors so when someone's is closed everyone is curious about what is going on in there and hanging a do not disturb sign on my door will not deter them from just coming in anyway. Luckily I have blinds on my windows that I can close. Those wipes and fan are a good idea. The only thing that will be kind of yucky is my hair. I have long hair and it goes up in a ponytail when I exercise. I can just hear the comments already. BUT since I don't deal with the public at all only the office staff it's not going to matter.

I'll let you know how it works.

Edited to add: This might not even work since my laptop is going back to the store for an exchange tomorrow. This thing is brand new and there are serious problems with it.

I try to get in 1-2 power walks per week (outside when the weather's nice; inside the Minneapolis downtown skyway system in inclement or cold weather) and a lighter, shorter weight set with 21.25-lb dumbbells once a week. Neither of these makes me very sweaty, and they are good "bridge" workouts between my four hard-core weekly sessions. I have my dumbbells and other attachments in my office; although my office has a floor-to-ceiling window, believe it or not I tape up a festive looking table-cloth from Target and that blocks people's view. For the walking, I just bring my shorts or leggings, my tee-shirts and a hat, as well as a special pair of fitness walking shoes. And my Walkman (that fossil that still plays prehistoric audiocassettes).

I did plyo's in the women's restroom. All men work there under my dh (as I was filling in for someone, to help dh) I also did some jumping jacks. It just drove me crazy sitting for so long. Just not use to that.

I've done a variety of things over the years. The easiest for me was to go for a walk. However, I have taken my bike to work and then biked at lunch. I've taken my X-C skis to work when I worked for a company that was next to a golf course and went skiing at lunch. I've done stretching and yoga in my office. And a few of my co-workers and I have brought in videos and did floor aerobics and toning in the conference room. And at none of these jobs was a shower available. Bring workout clothes/shoes (I used shorts/tee), a towel and washcloth to take a quick sponge bath, fresh underwear to change into, and keep deordorant/old hairdryer/other "necessary stuff" in your desk drawer.

I walk at work all the time, except when it's too hot.

When I was active duty, they always said that if you worked out during your lunch break, you had 1 1/2 hrs for lunch, if not, then only 1/2 hr for lunch.

I worked 12 hr shifts on a busy inpatient ward, I was lucky to get 15 minutes to scarf down my food, much less 1/2 hr!!! At one point, I was able to work out at work because we were so slow. I went in the back behind a bunch of partitions and did a Kathy Voigt tape. At that point, I was also riding my bike to work (about 8 miles each way).

Now, I still work 12 hr shifts in the civilian world, and found that I need to work out before going to work to make it through the entire shift with energy to stay awake to drive home! I usually get up around 1600 and workout for an hour then get ready for work.

Kim-
Just posting to empathize. I too am NOT a morning person, and come home starving and fatigued. I love to work out in the afternoon. There is a gym next door to my office, and I checked them out last week, but the only membership they offered was a FULL membership, which I already have at my gym at home. I'm just not willing to pay for two. In any event, I don't have enough time during the day to workout AND shower AND put my make-up back on, AND do my hair again. x( I was just going to join to use the strength training machines. No luck.

I sure hope it works out for you!

I'm a teacher, so during the day there really isn't enough time to work out. But even if there *was* time in the middle of the day, I probably wouldn't exercise just because of the not being able to shower factor. Then there's the not being able to eat factor, which would probably REALLY kill me! :)

Anyway, I can also commiserate with your problem. I'm a morning person - before I became a teacher, I'd run & lift in the AM and was happy being able to take one shower and having set the tone for my day. But now because I have to leave so early in the morning, it just doesn't work for me most days. And I had the same problem as you described where I had a tendency to blow off a workout if I waited until after work (too tired, etc.) Something changed this January, though. I just snapped myself out of the excuses finally & have gotten good about exercising in the afternoon/evening - usually I don't wait, I do it AS SOON AS I come home from work. I even lay out my running gear, so it's all ready to go. I suppose the bottom line is that if we're really determined to work out, we'll MAKE IT WORK on our schedules.

It sounds like maybe you just got into a down cycle (which I think happens to most people). And since the lunch workouts seem to be do-able, they might be just the thing to get you back into your zone. Best of luck!
