My fiance' is very supportive of me. I realate my exercise passion to his surfing passion. i don't want to miss workingout (except my rest day) just like he wouldn't miss a swell. Anyways, we are going to the keys for the weekend. My family has a house there. Of course i'm briging my Cathe:p So he made the comment. Your working out this weekend! Why? To me its just annoying to me for him to even ask that. Its not like my working out interferes with anything. I'm up at 5 while everyone still sleeps to get it in. Has anyone ever had this?

Yes. My Dad teases me sometimes for all of the money I spend on exercise equipment. I have no problem spending the money because I can't think of one thing yet that I have bought that I regretted. I have never gone for the latest workout craze or trend or newest shoes, apparel, etc.

However, it is very light teasing and he always follows up with, "I'm so proud of you for doing this everyday," and, "You have really encouraged the rest of the family to be healthier." Even though he won't say so, I definitely think he feels better due to my mom's healthier cooking habits (less salt, meat, more veggies).

Earlier this summer, on our week long vacation at the beach, my DF said "Why does this vacation have the revolve around your workouts?"

Oh my goodness I was SO angry!

My DF does get a little upset when I workout on weekend days, but I just try to include him in the workout and that makes it better. Everyone is really supportive of me, though.

Yes and no. Remember it goes both ways. Getting up at 5 and working out on your vacation is not hurting anyone or getting in the way of anyone's plans so really they just view you as odd. However, if you are so inflexible about missing a work-out that you make people change plans, I think they have a right to comment. Marriage and dealing with families takes a certain amount of compromise. Someday when you have kids, your work-out time will not be all cut and dried, and there will be days you have to change your plans on the spur of the moment.

I for one, have gotten real good at planning two spots in the day for a work-out. If the first one gets waylaid, then maybe the second works. Sometimes I get both spots, some times I get none, but I have been consistent in working out for a very long time, and it is because I am flexible about it.

I also have learned to never talk about my work-outs unless directly asked, because I do work-out harder than most of the general population, and they are not interested in that. Last week a fellow saw me coming into work in the early hour after I had biked(for me, it is a significant distance). He was surprised at what good shape I am in, and started asking me what kind of work-outs I did. I hesitantly told him, and he was very complimentary, and asked me tips on how to be more consistent to get the kind of results I get. So not everyone is negative!

The only comment I get "why would anyone in their right mind get up at 4:30 am to excercise? " They really give me a strange look when I say that I don;t even have to use an alarm clock, I just wake up and do it!:7

kariev,

I have to agree with dorothyrd. If you feel you have to take your workouts away with you this weekend then there is cause for comment, unless you are training for something important.

I have seen people for whom diet and exercise is an obsession rather than just a hobby for health and fitness. It's not nice to be around them, it's a pain. For me exercise is just a hobby, I don't talk about it much, I am flexible about when I do it, chopping and changing workout days and time if necessary. If I go on holiday I don't take it with me, I might shop for more DVDs :) and I miss doing it but I can live without it till I get back.

I think a weekend is not a long time and you can find activities to do together rather do a Cathe workout, which does require alone time, and even though you say you get up at 5am to do it so it doesn't interfere with other things, you are missing out on spending quality time together like spending longer time in bed together.

With all due respect, I like to work out while on vacation but I am not obsessed. I am dedicated. Labeling folks who work out on vacations as OBSESSED is unfair and unecessary.

I do it all of the time and have yet to hear anyone I am on vacation with complain. I even worked out on my HONEYMOON 4 years ago! DH and I went on a cruise and I was in the fitness room walking on the treadmill for 30 minutes every evening before dinner. He had no problems with it at all! I simply plan my work outs for times when I will not interfere with plans to go somewhere or participate in another activity and everyone is happy.

Wendy,

I am like you, I work out ALL the time and even when I go on holiday I try to exercise like walking every where, I might even run and go to they gym if there is one. But I don't take a Cathe workout and get up at 5am. I go on holiday to relax, take a break and chill out not punish myself.

Obession is when you insist on booking a hotel with a gym or not at all; when you have to stick to your routine all the time on holiday; when you just can't be flexible about what you do or what you eat; when it interferes with other people's enjoyment of the holiday or even their life in general. That to me is too much.

I also like to stay active on vacation. To me, it is just like brushing my teeth every day. So, I may not bring Cathe, but I usually always get a run in, or play tennis, do a lot of walking, sometimes biking. I may do some push ups and tricep dips. I'm pretty active everyday so it doesn't change for me when I go on vacation.

I have to agree with Wendy on this.

Personally I do not consider my workouts a hobby. It is about a quality of life now & for future. I am not obsessed, miss my fair share of workouts etc... BUT - when I am on a specific plan with a specific goal it IS my priority.
Since also making it my job (I'm certified Trainer now) I find a lot less funny looks from people. However I dont think you have to be in the fitness industry to have exercise as a priority. Just because working out isnt status quo doesnt mean its not healthy and "normal" to have it as one of our MANY priorities every day.

Flexibility is key- If DH says he has a late meeting then I know I can workout at night- if he is coming home by 5 then I plan to do my workout in AM.... If his schedule changes last minute I never re-arrange my plans tho.

I also keep my workouts to 60 minutes or less tho while on vacations etc... I guess it depends how much of family time its cutting into.

What's the difference between going to the gym on vacation or bringing a Cathe dvd? Either way you're working out and taking time away--it shouldn't matter how it's done. I think the OP is absolutely fine in bringing her Cathe dvds and it would infuriate me if my SO said something like that. Working out (especially to Cathe) makes me happy, calm, in a better mood, more fun, etc. and so I'm going to do it as often as I can--and my family likes me happy so they are more than willing to give me 40 minutes to get that way. If life gets in the way, then fine. But I wouldn't hesitate to bring my Cathe dvds on vacation for an instant.

ETA--not everyone considers working out a "punishment". For some people it's their therapy and the only "alone time"/"me time" they can get.

I'm with JMFrane / Jo-Jo on this one. When DH and I go on vacation, or I travel alone (very seldom) I always bring my aqua gear because I can always get access to a pool, and it's a real energy boost to get in a kick-butt workout at the end of the day. I find it enhances my enjoyment of the travel itself.

Everybody is different and each to her own. But for me personally, I don't go on holiday and do really hard workouts at the same time. I thought the purpose of a holiday is just that, a holiday. I don't want to do a hardcore Cathe workout. I want to continue with my exercise but in a more relaxing way. If I was going to a hot country I don't want to be holed up a gym sweating buckets, that would be punishment.

I am not as hardcore as most people on this forum. Fitness isn't my life, it's just a past time. And if I was doing a job where I can move about more often rather being stuck in front of the computer all day I wouldn't bother with exercise at all.

No, I don't usually get those comments. But personally, I probably would not plan to work out during a short weekend getaway...Most of the time, I am quite active when I travel - walking a lot, biking, swimming, etc. so if I'm away for a week or less, I don't really sweat missing my usual workouts. I might pack some running gear or a Cathe DVD, but whether or not I get to it is not written in stone. It certainly does depend upon the circumstances and whether or not my working out would affect others and/or our schedule. But generally, my philosophy on vacation (and I am speaking for myself and not saying what anyone else should do) is that I want to take the time to stop, relax, and fully enjoy the company of whomever I'm with and the beauty of wherever we are.

I sometimes catch myself becoming a bit obsessive (e.g. wanting to decline spontaneous social invitations b/c they'll interfere with a planned workout). I say ya gotta let go and just roll with life sometimes. If I dropped dead tomorrow, I would not regret missing the workout, but I would regret not spending time with those I love or not seeing a sight I've long dreamed of.

Well I'll tell ya, I don't get up at 5am to work out ANY DAY! LOL It's just not me. If I ever get to a point where it is the only time available for my work outs then I will probably LEARN to exercise that early in the morning but for now...NO WAY!:p

I have never had my exercise routine interfere on a vacation. I happily adjust my work outs (time of day, length, type) to fit the vacation situation I am in. I do, however, prefer a more formal work out to just walking everywhere. I personally do not consider walking while site-seeing or whatever as my work out for the day but if you do, that's great. :)

I don't consider my work outs "punishment" either. I truly enjoy them or I would not have kept up a 5-6 day per week steady work out routine for 5 years now.

My view on it is to each his own. Whatever makes YOU happy is what YOU should do. Just remember that everyone is different and what works for you may not work for somebody else and vice-versa. There is no right or wrong way of doing things. It's all really just a matter of opinnion and personal taste.

Me too!:7 :7 :7

Wendy :),

I agree that doing a lot of walking does not qualify as a formal workout, but as long as I am active and burning calories, then I don't stress about not fitting in what I would normally do. Completely agree that (like anything else so long as it is not harming others), it is an individual choice. :)

Karie,
Let us know what DF says if you use that line on him. :)
