Do you have a favorite book?

I thought I'd ask everyone. My reading taste like my music taste is so vast so when my husband asked me what my favorite book was I froze. I wanted to answer him but I couldn't and it just bothered me. I know that there are a lot of readers here so I was just curious.

Gone With the Wind
The Red Tent
The Book Theif
A Clockwork Orange
The Kite Runner
Snow Flower and the Secret Fan
The Other Boleyn Girl
The Stand

There's more, but I'll stop at my top eight. : )

A Thousand Splendid Suns

(I don't make time to read very often, at least not novels, so this wasn't hard for me!)

I've always got a book going! Lord knows how many I've devoured.

My favorite -- To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Even better than the movie by far!

I only get to pick one????

The Black Jewels Triology by Anne Bishop. Yes, its a triology which makes it 3 books, but you can get it bound in 1 volume, so that only makes it 1 book :)

I Know This Much Is True- Wally Lamb

SO HARD to pick one!

ETA: Nan, I LOVE those books! I have never known anyone else that likes them. :)

My list:

- To Kill a Mockingbird
- Pride and Prejudice
- Gone With the Wind
- The Mists of Avalon
- The Sparrow

And a nod to my all-time childhood favorites, the Little House series and Anne of Green Gables.

Me, neither. I guess that makes us special:D I've read them 3 or 4 times. At least once a year. The recent installments haven't been as good. The one w/ the 4 short stories was pretty good, I like Lucivar/Marion's story and the Zuulamaan story (talk about ANGRY!). But the 2 more recent ones (the one with the spooky house and the one w/ the newer queen being introduced) were not so good. The newer queen's story has potential though.

Ok, done hijacking the thread, sorry!

Picking a favourite book is like picking a favourite child: you can do it, but you are setting someone up for therapy eventually.

Here's the ones I can't choose between:

Spider Robinson: Melancholy Elephants
Theodore Sturgeon: Godbody
David Palmer: Emergence
JK Rowling: All the Harry Potter Books (yep, I'm one of those!)
CS Lewis: Narnia Chronicles (the books, not the movies)
JRR Tolkien: Lord of the Rings Trilogy (books, then movies)
John Irving: A Prayer for Owen Meany
Laura Ingalls Wilder: Little House Books

probably The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks (but I also agree that it is like picking a favorite child)!!

Just a classic love story. I know that some people don't like NSparks, but I love this one!!

I cannot even begin to pick just one! My tastes run so far from one end of the spectrum to the other that I could never choose. I live to read!

I totally missed the part about picking only one. I would have to go with The Book Theif. I don't think I have ever been so moved by a book before. I fell in love with all of the characters.

Top favorite: The Once and Future King by T.H. White--a tale of King Arthur

Also love To Kill a Mockingbird--just re-read it and it's still incredible and moving.

Love Jane Austen novels.

Also a Harry Potter fan and a fan of the Lord of the Rings series.

And like sparrow13, loved The Sparrow--amazing book.

I read a broad range of books and go through phases--like I'll read sci-fi for a few months, then go onto mysteries, then classics, then random trash. I just wish I could read as much as I could pre-kids.

Jane Eyre.

If I had memory-erase device, I would read it every month or so. Because I don't, I read it every couple of years. Love it, love it.

Have a great night!

This place is full of bluestockings!! Every time a book thread shows up there are tons of responses. I love it!

I too did not see the "only one book please" part. :D To Kill a Mockingbird then. IMO the best American novel ever written.

My favorite book is "One Hundred Years of Solitude" by Gabriel Garcia Marquez but I liked the Italian translation better than the English. I wish I knew Spanish so I could read it in its original language.

Dragon Lance Saga books
The Sword of Truth(10 books)
The Death Gate Novels(7 books)
Chronicals of Narnia
It
Lord of the Flies
The Lost Years of Merlin Epic(7 books)
total 70 books
