Do you beleive in heaven or hell...

or are we already living in hell?

The post about the people using their baby as a downpayment on a car got me thinking about what I was chatting about today with a friend.
And I also know that religion is a very touchy topic so I hope this doesn't get nasty.
I was raised in a very religious home and there are times I think that there is a heaven and other times I am not so sure. There are times I know I should be going to church but then a Sunday goes past and I never made it there.

DH was watching the news the other day and they were talking about trying to find 19 canadian child abusers who have websites. The news broadcaster asked the police officer how young these children were on these websites that were being abused...were they as young as 5 yrs old? The police officer said that it was much worse then that, some sites have babies still attached to the placenta. Most of us here are mothers and I being a new mother again, cannot imagine hurting such a pericious little creature, that surely must have came from God.
So...when I was talking to my friend today about this she said that she saw a documentary on t.v one time about a priest who gave up preaching b/c he thinks this is hell we are living now and when we die we are finally at peace.
This kind of makes sense to me but yet doesn't. If there is a God why are there so many people in the world suffering, and especially innocent little children. THis world is constently getting worse, how much worse can it get? Is this hell we are living now or are there other places that we are going? I know life for me here hasn't been hell but Im sure there are alot of people who have had horrible lives and life for them as been hell.
Any thoughts?

I for one believe in Heaven and Hell and that what we do here determines which one we spend eternity in. Our lives here are just a stopping ground to see what choices we make. Yes, there is a lot of tragedy here and horrific things that happen on earth. Which goes to show how powerful the devil is. I know some may ask why God allows such things to happen and I don't think any of us can answer that. I do know that God helps those who ask for his help to be able to get through the hard times and challenges that life throws our way.

Here's a point to ponder. Not my idea, I heard it from an unknown source and it was worded better, but I hope I get the idea across. Is it better to live a good live with the hope of going to heaven and to die and find out there is no after life or is it better to live a selfish, indicent, immoral life believing that it doesn't matter because there is no such thing as heaven and then to die and find out there is a heaven and hell?

Well, since you asked...

Yes, I believe in a Heaven and a Hell. I believe that we live in a fallen world filled with sin and death.

Ravi Zacharias discusses this in his radio broadcast, "Let My People Think". You can listen to it and other archived broadcasts for free. Here's a link to the first part of the broadcast, "Is There Meaning in Evil and Suffering?"

This is the description of the broadcast:

Is There Meaning in Evil and Suffering? (part 1 of 4)
by Ravi Zacharias
Ravi debates the difficult question, "Is There Meaning in Evil & Suffering" at the Faith and Science Lecture Forum. Ravi's address is followed by a rebuttal from three panelists: Dr. Bernard Leikind, a plasma physicist, senior editor at Skeptic Magazine and a renowned atheist; Dr. Jitendra Mohanty, one of India's most noted Hindu philosophers and a distinguished professor at Emory University in Atlanta; and William Lane Craig, a noted author, Christian philosopher and apologist. After the rebuttals and Ravi's response, the audience asks questions.

Im glad this question got answered without someone getting offended (yet) I know that religion and politics are very touchly subjects.

Sometimes I really don't know what to beleive but for the most part I beleive that there is an after life. Do I beleive that I am going to hell just b/c I don't go to church even though I am a good person, no. Do my parents religion beleive that? Yes.
Its just so confusing at times and while this world is getting crazier and scarier everyday sometimes it makes me wonder where it will all end. It as to...it can't possibly get much worse.
Thanks again ladies,
Lori:)

Yes, there is a heaven. Yes, there is a hell. Yes, God exists, as does my Savior, his Son, Jesus, and the Helper, the Holy Spirit. And so does Satan and his demons. Satan and the sinful nature of man is the reason for the evil and trouble of this world. And the promises that God made in the Bible are what comfort me, strengthen me and keep me going every day. Amen.

Yes, i believe.
Off the topic here...

Gidget, that is the most adorable little bugger. I want to squeeze him all up.
I am so happy for you..
Enjoy the bundle of joy.

I believe what the Bible says. Nothing in the Bible has ever been proven false. Hell and Heaven are both seperate places outside of this earth. Going to church will not get you to heaven nor will all the good works in the world. The Bible says the only way to heaven is by accepting Jesus as your Lord and Saviour and believing that he rose again in 3 days. We confess our sins to Jesus and ask him to forgive us. That's it. The Bible says that the world looks on the outside (works, etc.) but God looks at and knows our hearts. That is what He is concerned with. It's not about religion. We live in a corrupt world and that is why God sent His Son to die on the cross for our sins, so that we would have hope. In the Bible, Jesus was constantly admonishing the "religious" people (Pharisees, etc.) because they were governed by appearances and following the law. Jesus was disgusted with them because their hearts were selfish and corrupt. Lori, you may want to do some searching of your own in the Bible. I use "The Amplified Bible" because it gives synonyms which helps me to understand it better. Also, a great resource for teaching is joycemeyer.org. Joyce was molested by her father and I think brothers as well when she was growing up. Her life is a testimony of how God can turn evil into good. Her book and message entitled "Beauty for Ashes" is especially good. HTH, Ashley

No, I don't believe in heaven or hell. And I think we'd be better if people thought that this world, this life, this here and now, was miracle enough. Instead, somehow they believe that they deserve more. If people focused on the wonder of what we already have, maybe the world wouldn't be as polluted, developed, and abused as it is now. And maybe we'd treat people a little nicer, knowing that this was it; none of that "I'll ask god for forgiveness and it'll be all better," "my god's better than your god," etc. etc.

I think it's a nice fantasy to believe that evil people will be punished to an eternity of hell, but, who are we to know? And, anyway, according to the Christian belief, murderers, thieves, and all kinds of sinners can be "saved" somewhere down the road, and they'll end up in heaven. Too bad if the people they hurt, killed, or wronged didn't have the same epiphany. (Still don't get how Anne Frank and other Jews are burning in hell, but many of the Christian people who were responsible for their pain and death are partying with Jesus right about now.) Frankly, some of the people who are so sure they are going to heaven, aren't people I'd want to spend eternity with.

At this point in my life I do not believe in the traditional heaven/hell theory.

I believe our spirit lives on through our actions while we're alive.

I may change my mind later but as I've gotten older I have taken a more critical view of religion. I have seen that organized religion and religious zealotry (sp) has a negative affect on the world.

As far as the bible goes, it was written and used to keep control over the masses at the time and to this day is used for the same thing.

The things I have written are based on the beliefs I've come to through experience and education. And, if anyone here is going to try to convince my otherwise, save your fingers :)

I was reading one of the posters here and I have to say I disagree. I don't understand how you can "do good things and live a good life and not go to heaven. I just don't believe that. I think it is all about how you live your life. I do not consider myself to be religious. When someone asks me I tell them that I am spiritual. That's just my 2 cents on the subject. Oh, I didn't answer the question did I? Well I don't really know the answer. I just try to live a good life and treat people the way I want to be treated.

Te Te, I couldn't have said it better myself. Just wanted to let you know you're not alone in your beliefs. Thanks for the response!

Wow, who would want a God who doesn't forgive? I think his ability to forgive even the worst offenders is one of his greatest gifts to us. The whole point of believing in Heaven and Hell and God and Satan revolves around his forgiveness and all of our unworthiness.

What specific religion are you going after here? "Christian" covers a WIDE variety of demoninations, religions, etc... Jesus was a Jew and I don't think too many Christians will dispute that he is in heaven right now. Are you calling Hitler and the Nazi party (the ones who are responsible for the pain and death of Anne Frank etc...) "Christians"? I'm not sure what he was, but I'm pretty sure he wasn't Baptist. ;)

Frankly, some of the people who are so sure

Totally agree with you here!
