Difference in body fat measurements?

I just bought a Health-o-meter scale/body fat/body hydration thingy, since my old cheapy scale broke. So, the body fat thing says I have 22% body fat. I've been measuring my body fat at the gym for about 10 months now, and have never been above 16 percent. The thing at the gym is the handheld kind, I'm not sure what brand. My last measurement at the gym was 14.8%. This seems like a huge variance to me. How do I know which one is correct???? I'm really bummed if the 22% is right, considering I'd like to get down to 12% and possibly do a figure competition. I'm 5'4" and weigh 110.
So, what do you think? Should I try the one I just bought again in the morning and see what it says? I'm not sure I want to keep it if it's that inaccurate. And depressing....lol

I have the scale one but never got to use the one that pinches. I would assume the hand held at the gym would be more accurate than the scale. Is the scale the kind where you just enter in you height, age, and male or female?

Even though I don't have an answer for you I had to respond because you post excited me. I'm about you height and weight about the same. I would say I'm pretty toned and was bummed at the % the scale gave me too. If someone can chim in here and confirm it then my body fat might be lower than I thought and that would be great!

Sorry to ramble, I do hope someone can help you out though~

The only way to get an accurate percentage of body fat is to do the water testing thing that the military does. I wouldn't care so much about the numbers. With those calipers, you can get two different people to do that same test to you within five minutes and they could give you readings as much as 5% apart. All that matters is that you are consistent with how are analyzing. Use the same equipment the same way everytime to get the most accurate percentage of fat loss. Also, look in the mirror for definition. That will be the most accurate way to determine how much fat you are losing! :)

The body fat scales are horribly inaccurate. You could get wildly different readings 5 minutes apart. The result you get depends on a lot of things - how hydrated you are, whether you've eaten recently, your body temperature, the air temperature, the phase of the moon... (okay, so not the phase of the moon, but the other things do make a difference). They are also known to be even MORE inaccurate on athletic, muscular people. Some of them have an "athlete mode" to compensate for this, but even that result is usually off.

I hate those body fat scales!! This morning mine told me I was at 32% body fat. There is no way in he**!! I am 5'4" and weight 107-108. I should toss it. ;-)

Thanks y'all, now I don't feel quite so bad! Mary, I'd love to hear what the e-book said as well.

I guess I'll sill keep the scale, it's still a nice one. Maybe I'll just not use the BF measurement part of it!

Oh Wendy dont feel bad . Its not that I'm not happy with it ... it gives me a good reading , he says they are not accurate ... Oh my gosh just get the E-Book . They dont mail it to you You download it on your computer you could be reading it by tonight !!! .Check that 1st or second post in the fourm that talks about it the Web site is there . I forget how to get there without that LOL . It states many times about NOT SHaring the info . Makes me nervous to say alot . Via the internet !!!!I will try though .... But oh my I'm following his program forsure !!! Its easy . I'm Thinking his Eating Ideas And Cathes Workouts .Could be the ticket for me . Its alot Like Sarahs Plan !!! Great plan too !!! Once you download you can print it out .

I go thru this all the time. If I take my reading anytime other than when I crawl out of bed, I will get a much higher reading from my Omron. I had a virus several weeks ago and it peaked all the way to 18% when my reading is usually 13.4-14.5% now. One day I hope to have it all the way down to 11%, but I will have to learn to sweat bullets and more often for that!!
