Did any of you USED to hate step?

Cathlete
Hello,

This is my first post here but I've been a guest morning and night for months. Before I got any Cathe I couldn't understand what all the commotion was about. Now I have about 20 of her workouts and use them exclusively. }(

In general I hate cardio and really hate aerobic dancing x( but discovered a few months ago that I love kickboxing:7 . I've been loving my KPC and Kickmax, but I've been wondering if I should be expanding my cardio to other things. I have Bodymax (because I wanted the other workouts on that DVD) and on a whim tried it out, and totally cracked up when Cathe said, "I hope you're not just standing there watching!" I totally could not do it AT ALL and was standing there just frozen (I realize this is an advanced one so it should be no surprise).

I'd like to know - did any of you HATE step aerobics and then start to like them? If so, could you please, please tell me the secret? :*

I had to laugh at your post because I am the exact opposite!! I have to force myself to do kickboxing!! I hate it. I just know I can't do step every day. Its been this way for a long time so I don't know if it will ever change!!;(

Yeah, that was me. I thought step was stupid and boring and I could never get it. Then I discovered Cathe. :) Her step is addictive, really, but you have to start at a logical place!

Yep! Hated them with a passion! My second hate is the treadmill. However, Cathe is my inspiration. Something about her and her workouts that keep you pushing for more. I actually have run on my treadmill because it is part of my rotation this month.

Hi August

Welcome to the forum and I hope we'll "see" you around.

I have never ever hated step, love it. However, years ago I hated lifting weights until I saw and felt what it did for my body. So give stepping a try and be sure to start with one of Cathe's more basic DVDs. I believe step is a great "butt lifter" if that is any incentive.;-) :)

Hi August and welcome!

I can certainly understand how overwhelming step can be if you're looking at an advanced step workout and have never done it before...I'd probably run the other way as fast as I could.

Kickboxing is awesome, but as with any cardio activity you should try to incorporate other methods to keep from burning out and to avoid overuse injuries.

Step is an excellent cardio activity, but just like anything else, it will take some time to get used to. Start very basic and then go from there. Your body will appreciaate the change and if you're open to it, you will enjoy the challenge of conquering step - - one step at a time - - no pun intended (smile).

Hi August, I'm like Melody. I've loved step since it was invented. I hated weight training, which I did on my DH's bench in the dirty, boring basement. Cathe has made weight training interesting and enjoyable for me. Maybe her step workouts can do the same for you.

I didn't hate step when I started but I used to wonder if I'd ever figure it out. It really helped me to realise that the brain work of responding to cues was valuable unto itself. With new movement patterns your brain finds new neural pathways that help to keep the brain nimble and that's a very good thing.

That being said I can't imagine attempting BodyMax as my first step workout. I started with Charlene Prickett's old it figures shows. The choreography was exponentially easier than Cathe's. You did very well not to fall flat on your face! It can only get better!

Take Care
Laurie:)

Hi, August,
Welcome to Cathe's world:)

I hated step at first. I have an old small step from the 80's I think, a Bodyshaping one with a vhs tape. At first I was tripping all over it and fell a few times. Any complexity frustrated me terribly. But I guess I'm stubborn. And I was too heavy for any impact moves, so I kept at it and the more I stepped, the easier it got and the better I got. Now it's my perferred cardio. But I also love kickboxing...at least Cathe's KPC and CardioKicks:)

You do need to incorporate other forms of cardio, partly to prevent overtraining and possible injuries or burnout. Partly to cross train. Cathe has some excellent beginner step workouts; check them out!

Rhythmic Step was her first step workout for me and now it's a favorite for me. It took me forever to get the hang of it...not the best selection for an intro to her work probably. But now I love it:) Good luck!

I hated floor aerobics and couldn't figure out what I was going to do for cardio! Then, on a whim, tried step and loved it immediately - it is and has been my favorite form of cardio for years. Kickboxing comes next for me and floor aerobics last (if I have too!).

I used to hate all forms of cardio..none of it was fun for me...I felt like I was just hopping around with no real purpose...Cathe has changed all of that for me. I started out with her easier step videos...basic step+body fusion, low impact step, and high step circuit...These may be a little easy for you cardio wise, but they will help you with Cathe's basic steps...the music is a little slower on these and there is lots of repetition...Then I started with cross train express once those became easy for me...now I do low max, imax 2 as well and just the other day I did 7 out of 10 intervals on the imax 2.. a real breakthrough for me when 6 months ago I could barely keep up with basic step. Once you learn the steps it becomes a lot more fun...But you probably need to start a little slower...Good luck!

Hello everyone,

Thank you for your responses! :D

Red mct - Was there a particular step DVD that got you hooked?

Beth 6395 - And you like step now? Do you think it would be worth buying a beginning step DVD? Or is a plain aerobics-hater like me destined not to like it even if it's not advanced?

Lydia - You mention Rhythmic Step being your first Cathe step but that it might not be a good intro into conquering the step? Do you think that would be a good place to start in hopes to catch the step bug (as I've caught the weight-lifting and kickboxing bug }( )?

Debra - What is it with cardio?! It must be great to love dancing around. Thank you for your DVD suggestions. I'm going to go and watch the previews now.

Again, thank you so much for all your responses and I look forward to "seeing" you on the boards again! (Of course, I don't have to look that much forward since I'm literally logged on here morning and night :7 :7 )

I was never a stepper then I tried Imax2/Cardio+Weights. Imax2 is somewhat difficult to learn BUT once I got it down I found that it is a BLAST to do and I could transition into other Cathe step workouts! Many of the steps and terminology are similar in Cathe's different workouts. Cardio+ Weights has easier choreography and is also fun!

To learn it, I took it a section at a time. Doing only a couple sections each day until I could do the workout in its entirety.

Usually I would do it along with another workout so that I felt I got in a great workout for the day :)

Be careful though, Before long you will have a library FULL of step workouts!}(

Heheh,

Terri, I'm really hoping to catch the step bug!! }( }( }( I'm just such a ;( :+ x( when it comes to choreography. Maybe it's because I'm a lefty. :*

I checked out a bunch of the step workouts...I put the Imax 2/Cardio+Weights and also the Basic Step/Body Fusion and even LowMax into my Wish List bin. Next time I order up a bunch, maybe I'll just go for them all. }(

Oh, I hope hope hope someday I'll be able to write that I'm finding stepping to be a blast!

Funny you post this - I just tried to do LoMax this weekend. I stood there watching just thinking I hate this! So I popped KickMax in instead. I haven't gotten to the point of selling LoMax yet(although I do want to get rid of IMAX - my knees just can't take that) because I keep thinking "maybe someday," but for now, I hate step and will stick with my kickboxing (I LOVE KPC!!) and NordicTrak for cardio.

Hey there, NY25,

Heh, yeah, I WANT to catch the step bug but I wonder if I'll be able to. Like you, I'm totally into my KPC and Kickmax. Plus, I just recently bought a ton of weight-lifting DVDs so I kind of want to wait on getting the beginner step ones (I like ordering my workouts by the bunch! }( ). I still can't decide if I want to try it simply because I generally don't like....movement...unless I can imagine punching somebody out or something ;-) . Doing dancy-type stuff just makes me want to punch my computer screen!
