Deli Turkey and chicken

Most brands are pretty processed I think but I do see a kind of turkey called "natural" that I have purchased when it's on sale...it is more like "real" turkey...drier, which leads me to believe it's less processed than other brands....HTH some. :)

I heard from the deli clerk that Eagle Valley is the "least" processed turkey. Not sure I believe that. I buy it every week for my lunch but I wish I could find something healthier and more natural. I've considered buying a whole turkey and baking it but the cost is unreal. You'd think turkeys were becoming extinct or something. Its a shame you can't afford to eat healthy. No wonder America is so obese.

Not to hijack this thread but I feel the same way. I was talking to my mom the other day and I said it is cheaper to be fat than to be healthy. If you buy fruits and vegetables and the good foods you can spend an arm and a let and for the same price you could probably fill a whole cart with the bad food. I say the same thing "no wonder America is so obese", because it's cheaper!!!

Add to that the fact that your AVERAGE restaurant meal, even a "healthy" one like a TURKEY SANDWICH at Panera or Arbys is over 800 calories!! Most salads can top 1500-2000 calories.
Ugh!!

I agree it is disgusting! Mac N Cheese runs about 50 cents a box or less for off brand, but an apple will cost you a buck!!!

It drives me nuts too! Sometimes I just eat plain old whole wheat angel hair pasta noodles with red sauce.

Its not horrible in cost/calories/or fat and provides me with energy, plus I get so sick of turkey sandwiches!

I don't know if you all use like sam's club or costco but that helps; I get big packs of strawberries for 1/4 price of the grocery store. I also get tuna, albacore for less than $1 a can. But then if you buy all the fresh stuff you have to make sure to eat it in a timely manner or it spoils; that really ticks me off!!

I see they carry the Eagle Valley brand at Giant Eagle - how much does it cost per pound?

Usually around $5.99 per pound which is ridiculous if you ask me. Back to the veggies and fruits - by the time I get through the produce section at Marc's I'm up to $50!! And thats no meats whatsoever, just produce. And only a few of those items are organic because its just so damn expensive. Its crazy.

You aren't kidding about the expensive part. When I decided to lose weight and eat more veggies and fruits, our grocery bill doubled. I easily spend over $100 a week on just produce for three people!

Personally I would consider most of it processed. Loads of sodium and corn syrup solids. I eat some on occaisions but pretty much stick with roasted meats that I slice up thin for salads or meals. It does freeze well. I plan ahead and buy extra. That way I can add my own salt free seasoning to it when roasting.

Don't forget to add in the sodium content which often approaches a days worth of sodium intake in one sandwhich.
