Deadlift substitutions

Cathe,
Dr's orders, no more deadlifts, lower back needs surgery. Am told to strengthen the core. What would you suggest while ya'll are doing deadlifts that would give similar results?
Loving the new ICE series. You guys are like !, AWESOME!! not just the workouts but the website, roadtrips, calendars, gym, workout blender, I could go on and on and on... Sheer inspiration! Thanks for all you do!

I too have lower back "issues", I was told to NEVER do deadlifts again! When ever Cathe and crew do dead lifts, I do step ups on the high step. It really isn't targetting the lower back at all, but it gets the Glutes good.
I am working hard at strengthening my core. It isn't easy, since I can not do anything that bends me forward.
Good luck!

I hope Cathe gives us some substitutions!

Hi, I do have spinal stenosis for 4 years now, and in the beginning I didn't do exercises for 3 months until I get pain pills and let me move, so I start again with modifications until now thanks to God I'm doing everything but always with precautions. Good luck

I too have spinal stenosis and have been dealing with it for the past 8 years. I take pain pills (gabapentin) and was getting steroid injections every 4-6 months up until last May when I had my last shot. Like you I do everything with mods and precautions and do try and work on my core as much as I can. I also find that stretching helps a lot to keep me limber. But what really helped get me off the injections and keep my pain at a 1-2 is walking. I took up walking last spring and walk now 5-6 miles a day. When I get up in the mornings I am soooooo very stiff I can barely walk or bend over. But after I walk on the treadmill for 30 minutes it's a totally different story. I can bend and walk without discomfort. I do absolutely no impact because it's jarring to my spine and ratchets my pain up to an 8+. So I do all low or non impact and it is working out so good for me. I modify the heck out of Cathe's workouts and I have gotten so good at doing this. So like you, I give thanks to God for what I am able to do to manage my pain and avoid surgery which I don't want to have to do.

Hi, dbclark, I did take gabapetin, but from the last year in October I was in my church and my pastor start to pray for healing and I said this is my time and I pray for me, that was Sunday night, and Monday morning I was supopost to go to CVS for refill and I said to my self if I did pray and I believe in God and I know he lisent to me, and the name of Jesus I will not take no more pain medicine until now, I been doing good , I know my limits but is not pain any more but still like you I do have to do exercises everyday to feel much better if not my legs get to tide, my cortisone shot was 3 years ago, you should try to get more muscle to get strong, my doctor told me, whatever you doing don't stop. I hope you feel better and if you need to talk about text me, no body can understand the pain only the one who has it. God bless you

There is a bonus segment on Great Glutes where Cathe does standing hamstring presses & curls using the firewalker loop. That might be an option if it doesn't put too much stress on the low back.
