Dateline NBC--To Catch a Predator (On the Beach)

Did anyone else watch this last night? Who knew that a beach house could be a fun new twist? I think that this show, and the Perverted Justice group, are doing some seriously good work.

I can never get over how unflappable Chris Matthews is when he has to confront those creepy, creepy men. Wouldn't it be terrible having Chris Matthews as a father? You wouldn't be able to get away with ANYTHING! "Oh really Jimmmy. You're late because your car broke down? Well right here in the transcript of you cell phone conversations from last night you say 'We'll be able to get away with BLANK. Dad will never be able know what we're up to'". :p

I like it best when they cry;-)

we saw it last night. my dh grew up around that area(i came around the same area in my high school years). the excuses were pathetic and the "i wasn't going to do anything" is bull. these men make me sick. i like how chris matthews is getting tougher with questioning every show. i can't believe one guy said life for him was tough. WAH!!! i have an autistic child and have to worry about her enough without pigs like this walking around, he makes my life tough!!!nobody is crying for me so why should we cry for him. creep!!!

on the other hand i see your point about having chris as a dad LOL.

Mattea,

Chris Matthews is the perfect host for that show!!! I can't imagine anyone else being as calm and stern as he is. Nothing fazes him!!

Yes, when they cry that is the best. Or when Chris comes out and they start apologizing and start sputtering stupid excuses like, "I was just here to make a friend" or "I was lost and looking for directions".

How stupid are these guys?! Really?! What about the guys that have SEEN the show??!! And they had a "sneaking suspicion" that this was a set up...but they went anyway?

Unreal. I think they deserve every charge they get.

Kassia,

ITA! "I can't get a girl"...oh wait, now I see how that excuses you preying on teenagers for sex, makes TOTAL sense! I also like how Chris Matthews is taking a harder tact with them. I'm glad to see they're going after identify thieves next.

i do have a question, though...????

so they hire an 18 year old girl who IS of age... but she lies and says she's younger.... yet they still arrest these creeps... how does that work? first of all... isn't it entrapment? and second of all.... since they girl is really 18 and nothing ever happens....

is it more a scare tactic? i mean i love that they are exposing these creeps.... but can/do charges really stick?

Rose,

I'm a believer that child predators should be have to undergo "some" kind of medical "procedure", ahem. Did you see the one guy who was ALREADY a registered sex offender?!

Mattea,

I missed that one. There have been so many episodes now (unfortunately :().

But I did see the one where Chris Matthews actually RECOGNIZED a guy that had been on their very first episode!!! He got busted then...came back a couple of months later to a different house. Chris looks at the guy and says, "You look familiar..".

WHAT?!!! Why wasn't he off the streets after the first bust? To me, that goes to show why the punishments should be much stiffer because the chances that they will just keep repeating the same offenses over and over is very high.

I'm thinking that the charges are legit or else I doubt that they would have so many officers there. However, the sad fact of the matter is that I believe the punnishment is not very harsh. I don't know what their jail time is, if any. Jail overcrowding I'm sure has a lot to do with the reason that these perv's don't spend much time there.

I'm glad to hear that they are going to chase identity thieves next. I hadn't heard that.

You'd think that maybe some of these sicko's would wake up and maybe not do what they want to do in fear of this show. But, then again, there's the guy who got caught twice on Dateline.

Just wanted to point out that the host of the show is actually Chris Hansen. Chris Matthews is the host of Hardball on msnbc. And I agree, he does a great job. But I can't watch too much of that show because it's so depressing and sad!

They were talking about this on the morning radio show I listen to. They found out that it's illegal to have any type of sexual conversation with someone you believe is underage over the internet. It doesn't matter if they turn out to be older, as long as they believed the other person was underage and still carried on a (sexual) conversation with them.

I started watching it & couldn't help but keep watching it. I was just appalled at those idiots. And the military guy w/ a 7yo dd??? SICK!! Those men disgust me & I hope they get what they deserve!!! As a Mom of 3 girls it's scary to know what type of people are out there!!

I did get a chuckle out of the 25 yr old who was crying when they arrested him. And Chris Hanson is a great host, he is just perfect for that show!

they are soliciting sex from someone they believe to be underage(even some admitted face to face to the girl that they know she was underage). as long as they think they are meeting an underage girl/boy then its intent to solicit sex from minors. and yes charges do stick,at least i know in my area.

also THEY approach them online. they even said last night that all the person did was log on and they were slammed with 20 repsonses for private chats and the men willing to talk about sex. nobody pulls that out of them.the men even sat on the beach on camera and told this girl what they wanted to do, explicitly. they were up to no good whether the did do anything or not. and they may not have done anything to this girl but imagine someone out there that this did happen to.

Waht will it take to get these guys to "wisen up"? How many times have they run this kind of stuff and they still catch men??? I absolutely appalls me yet scares me that this can happen so easily.
Ellen

I was just appalled at these guys. The one who was sweating and crying - he was willing to sacrifice his wife and children for a fling with a 14-year old before being shipped off to Iraq?

As for whether this sting is legit: The men THINK that the decoy is 12 (or 14 or whatever - anyway, underage). For all intents and purposes they thought this decoy was the same underage person they were chatting with and had intentions of have sex with, so yeah, that is illegal.

However, I believe "intent" to commit the act and actually being caught "engaging" in the act dictate differing severity of punishment.

As far as I know, it is not illegal to chat with minors on the internet, is it?

I watch every episode of To Catch when it's on! I agree with everything you all said.

I was scared for that girl when that one guy came running up behind her, and the suggested they immediately go upstairs. How creepy. It's a sad state of affairs, that's for sure! It's scary, whether you have sons or daughters. Very very scary.

I make sure that I know the name and the home location of every listed sex offender within a reasonable distance to my house. I study their faces and talk about them with my friends, so that we are all aware of exactly who and where these guys are!

Gayle

I also saw it. Every single time they show one of these Dateline Catch a Predator specials I think that they catch a very small group from probably millions of sick people out there. I can't help to be creeped out by the people they catch in there and not to mention that some of them are respected members of the community (sometimes even in relationships and with kids themselves!) It's just too creepy... I think the internet has changed all our relationships forever.

I didn't see the Beach one, but I just love it when the guy says he's seen the show before. Why would you chance getting caught up in something like that if you've seen the show catch other people? Just goes to show what happens to men's brain when the blood supply leaves.
