Darn you, weak dollar!

I just spent the day firming up my travel plans for this summer (I'm going to present at a conference in Belgium, then spend 3 days in Paris). I bought my plane ticket (yeeouch!), reserved my hotel in Paris (after much indecision about which one to choose), and ordered some odds and ends.

My credit card is in pain (and so am I!).
 
Kathryn...sounds like a nice summer trip!! I am envious of your travels....But I guess flying will be getting a lot more expensive in the next year so we may as well fly now, or soon anyway!!

I just hope the dollar gets stronger (or the Euro gets weaker!) by the time I actually leave, so I can do more SHOPPING! :D
 
Oh Kathryn, I feel for you!! It has gained a little ground in the last month (went from .61 Euro cents to .62) but that's about it. Everyone I talk to thinks it will dip to .50 Euro cents sometime this year. Look at it this way, at least you don't live here!!! :)

I lived just outside of Paris for a year before going to grad school (I was a Fullbright TA at a lycée in the suburb of Saint-Germain-en-Laye), but that was a while ago.

I'm not sure if I'll visit many indoor locations, I just want to get reacquainted with Paris and hear and speak as much French as possible...and shop!...but maybe the Louvre (though a visit there can take all day, from what I recall). I didn't pick up a museum pass, but I might do that as well.
 
Wow Kathryn, how neat that you lived over there. My trip was very very short and at the time I was a volunteer docent in the Arts Alive program at my children's elementary school. Couldn't miss out on The Louvre at that point in my life.

Spent a few days in Bordeaux prior to Paris to was able to see some of France before we "ran" through the Louvre and walked around downtown a little.

Sounds like you will really enjoy your trip "back to another point in time" for you. Kinda like a homecoming of sorts?
 
Sorry to hear of your pain, Kathryn. We didn't even consider Europe in our vacation plans this year. If the dollar ever regains strength, France or Italy will be first on our list of vacation choices.
 
I was a French major in college, and spent my junior year at the Sorbonne. I lived in a women's dorm in the 14e arrondissement. But that was a looong time ago also. One of my classes was an art history class, and we spent a lot of time in the Louvre (it was the year the glass pyramid entrance opened, so I got to see it both during the construction and after.)

*Sigh* I would love to go back....someday when the kids are older...

I was fortunate enough to take my DD and a friend of hers back to Argentina where she was born. The dollar is very strong there, so after the pain of the cost of the flight, we enjoyed some great shopping. Kathryn, not interested in the "Paris of South America"? ;)

Forget the Louvre! If you haven't been for ages, go to the Musée d'Orsay. I recommend going over there the day before you visit and buying a ticket in advance as the queues to buy on the day are massive. There's an advance purchase booth just by the main entrance.

It's a wonderful building with some amazing stuff in there.

Have a great trip whatever you do but take plenty of money!
 
I was in Europe May 15-30 when the dollar was at it's lowest. Paris was the most expensive place of all( we went to Holland, Luxembourg, Germany, Belgium and France). But all in all, the trip wasn't horrible expensive. You can stil find things to do that won't break your wallet.

I'm not going anywhere, not even in the US!! I've got a vacation coming up next week, and I may just stay home, just to save money on gas. Lemme tell ya, things are getting tight.

I decided to get a "Paris Museum Pass," which will allow me free access to most of the museums in Paris for 4 days, so I can visit both if I want to! I'll definitely check out the Musée d'Orsay, since I'm not sure I saw it when I was there before.
 
I fully agree about the Musee d'Orsay being a must! I lived in Paris and went to school there for a couple years when I was a teenager and have been back a few times to visit my family. It is one of my very favorite cities in the world.

Oh wow! I stayed in a women's dorm too in the 14e back when I did my year in Paris. I was off Rue d'Alesia. Can't remember the name of it though. I must of done a similar program that you did. I took the art history class at the Sorbonne where we would meet for class at the Louvre. That was my kind of art class :)
 
Wow, what a coincidence! I lived in the Maison des Etudiantes on Boulevard Raspail, not far from the Jardin du Luxembourg. It was an amazing year, and I'm so glad I got to do it. But I haven't used much of my French in years.
