Damaged Hair help needed!

Hi all....just curious to see if anyone has a hair product they like....my ends are so dry, and I think that I have a lot of breakage....I'm thinking that using a flat iron is the culprit. However, I don't have a choice....even though my hair is straight, it is very frizzy and unruly. I do color my hair...although in the salon-never at home. Does anyone have a conditioner or deep conditioner they really like, and what styling products do you use to get sleek, straight, no frizz hair? I use the Chi silk infusion. Any advice? Thanks

Of course you have a choice! Get rid of that flat iron pronto! It's the very worst thing for your hair.

Frizzies could come from the products you're using. Stay away from silicones--it took me years to accept that they're incredibly bad for your hair's health. Read your ingredients--shampoos, conditioners & styling products with ingredeints that end in -cone are a nono (dimethicone, amidimethicone, & others I cannot spell or pronounce). Chi products have tons of cones in them. I trashed mine about a year ago.

Go to a salon & get trim & a deep condition. Better yet, buy yourself a heat cap & some deep conditioner & do it yourself at least 2X a month.

Don't shampoo every day if you don't have to. If you have oily skin you might have to, but at least use shampoos without sulfates. I shampoo 1-2X per week, but I condition every day.

Use your hair dryer (or any kind of heat) as little as possible. You might find your hair is wavier than you thought.

Your hair might not be meant to look sleek & straight. I've found since I've embraced my natural hair that it's much healthier & less frizzy.

Pantene shampoo has sulfates & conditioner has cones.

I think Suave has some sulfate free shampoo though, & Herbal Essences has some cone free conditioner.

Seriously, I read labels at the drugstore almost as much as at the supermarket. :p

hmmm....my hair does not have any wave to it....it is just straight and unruly! I always say I have witch hair....doesn't matter if I air dry or use the dryer....it is weird! I know I have to deep condition...just was wondering if anyone had a product they could recomend....I will def look at my labels....I could be throwing out my whole bathroom!!!

I'm a total hair nut...you have to use good products and that means spending money on them. The Chi iron is great.....try Kerastase products, or Terax products. They are both wonderful. You only need a small amount and so they will last months. You can get Kerastase at any really good high end salon (I live in Boston and there everywhere). Terax has the BEST conditioner, but it's harder to find. I buy mine online...just google Terax conditioner and it comes up. I have naturally wavy hair and I either put hot rollers or flat iron it everyday, and I will tell you that the friz could be cause from product build up...I use a product call "latte" by terax once a week to get rid of the build up and I never have frizz....so use good products and then you can use all the heat products you want.

I'm sorry, I'm gonna sound snarky here, but almost all of this is untrue. I do agree Terax is a good product. Kerastase, however, is an absurd waste of money. Here are the ingredients in a $95 16 oz jar of oleo conditioner:

Water, Behentrimonium Chloride, Cetearyl Alcohol, Glycerin, Amodimethicone, Potato Starch Modified, Cetyl Esters, Isopropyl Alcohol, Elaeis Guineensis Oil, Shorea Robusta Seed Butter, Methylparaben, Trideceth 12, Citric Acid, Chlorhexidine Dihydrochloride, Cetrimonium Chloride, Yellow 10 (CI 47005), Red 4 (CI 14700), Fragrance

Here are the ingredients in a $3.29 8 oz Suave conditioner:

Water (Aqua), Cetearyl Alcohol, Centrimonium Chloride, Dimethicone, Fragrance (Parfum), Quaternium 18, Potassium Chloride, Hydroxyethyl Cellulose, Propylene Glycol, Disodium EDTA, TEA Dodecylbenzene Sulfonate, DMDM Hydantoin, Glycerin, Panthenol, Hair Keratin Amino Acids, Sodium Chloride, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone

See much difference? I don't. If I had a choice I'd go w/Suave b/c it has less glyerin, which makes hair extremely frizzy in dry weather, & it has protein, which is what your hair is made of.

The statement "you can use any heat products you want" couldn't be more wrong. Heat is THE most damaging thing for your hair. Damaged hair = frizzy hair.

P.S. you can buy Kerastase at your local CVS or drugstore.com. You don't have to go to a high end salon for it.

Let me see If I can help here. I maintain blonde hair I lived in Michigan and recently am residing in Florida. My hair was very dry and frizzy someone told me to switch to Sulfate free to keep my color it made my hair feel like sandpaper. This is what a salon told me and I whipped my hair right back into shape.

Do not wash (shampoo it everyday) but you can condition it and you do not need to wash the conditioner out. I use Paul Mitchell Color Care now I also was told to pick up Redken Real Control Intense renewal it was at the beauty supply (Beauty Alliance here in Florida) maybe a Maly's or Industry Source just see who sells Redken it is a super moisturizing mask she told me to put it in a bedtime throw on a shower cap and leave it over night rinse in the morning and style do this until you feel it is in good shape I had to use it maybe a week but it is AWESOME.

Just watch your alcohol in products I use a blow dryer and flat Iron I use Morroccan Miracle oil (Alcohol Free) and Vavoom (Height of glam) put the Vavoom mousse first then a tiny bit of the Moroccan oil all over when you are done you can add a tad more AMAZING SHINE. Pureology is my alternative Shampoo and Conditioner for maintaining my red color underneath my blonde amzing results.

It is very hard to find what works but when you do you will be amazed. A tip if you know someone that has a manicurist liscense or hair go with them and it is so much cheaper. Some people have hair that they can use any product I can not, some leave a buildup, some weigh it down, some strip the color blah blah blah. If you have friends see what they use ask for a sample see if the beauty supplies have samples sometimes you can get packets or little bottles if you have a hair dresser see if she can squeeze a little into a container for you to try. And do not be afraid to ask, ask, ask. Talk to someone that has hair like yours see what they do. Trial and error is what it unfortunately comes down to whatever you do do not buy expensive products from walmart and meijers they are usually old and have been in the bottle awhile.

Good luck

I never heard about the damaging "cone" ingredients... I'll have to read up on that when I have a chance. I always get such an education here. ;)

I use Pureology shampoo & cond (pink bottles) and I just LOVE the Chi Silk Infusion. I have fine hair and I've found that as I've aged I must wash & style less often. My hair has gotten even finer with age. I used to wash my hair every day, but now I try to make it 2 or 3 days btwn washings . It's difficult to do that with working out. Once in a while I skip working out so I don't have to do my hair. Since I've cut back on the washes & blow-styling however, I've noticed a nice improvement in my hair's condition. It feels much softer and it's definitely shinier.

Another thing to consider is your diet and supplementation. Are you getting the right nutrients? Here is an article titled "Top 10 Foods for Healthy Hair" from WebMD that may be of interest. HTH.

Good luck!

I used a curling iron every day for years and needless to say it fried my hair!
I finally gave it up a few years ago and started using a round brush when I blow dry my hair - gives it a "flip" but doesn't fry it.
Lately though - maybe as I'm getting older (tired of saying that! haha) my hair has become much drier.
My stylist recommended Paul Mitchell Instant Moisture. I used it every day for a week and it really helped.

Forgot to say that I think part of why my hair was getting dry was for the last year I have tried to save money by buying drugstore shampoo - Sauve, Loreal, etc. I could really tell a big difference switching back to Paul Mitchell, Biolage and other "salon" shampoos. I do think you have to spend a little more to get a good shampoo.

Ever since I started using sulfate free shampoo and conditioner, my hair has been very healthy and shiny. I use Mastey products (you can find them at Marshalls or TJ Maxx sometimes). I highly recommend!

I started using Wen hair care products, it's a "conditioning cleanser" so it kind of addresses the don't use shampoo subject. I ordered the $30 starter, then they sent a 90 day kit, which I ended up cancelling for future, but I'm just going to buy the items as needed. I'm actually really impressed with it.

I do use a regular shampoo/conditioner a couple times a week and then Wen a couple times a week. I find I really do need a real shampoo at least once or twice a week.

My hair dries so nice and straight now, no flat iron, and I don't even have to use the hottest setting on my dryer.

In addition, I suggest using a leave in conditioner, I like Neutrogena, and always use a heat protecting product, I use Redken Smooth Down. I'm a product junkie anyway, so just to share, I also use a straightening balm by Oscar Blandi and Frederic Fekkai Glossing Cream.

HI,
I use Nutrisse Garnier to dye my hair. I loved the oil that they put into the dye so I went to GNC and purchased the grapeseed oil. When I am going to workout, I worh the oil through my hair and leave it in for the duration of the workout. I then shampoo as usual. This has really helped my hair. ( I use a little extra oil on the frizzy dry parts.) Hope this helps. I know some people use JOjoba.

For those of you that use hot rollers, what do you use?
I've always wanted to try them, but I feel terribly uncoordinated in trying to get them in my hair. (I guess the clipping has been a challenge for me.)

Any suggestions, there?

I have baby fine hair too..Keratase is a waste of freakin money, I have not noticed anything since using them and they cost an arm and a leg. I have used Redken's color extend shampoo and conditioner and like them okay. Also, I have been using Fredreik Fekkai's Protein Mask RX twice a week..its pretty decent.
I also shampoo twice a week, and the other days I rinse my hair with conditioner. I use a leave-in after my shower and Bumble and Bumble thickening spray. I curl my hair almost everyday ( I know) or wear it in a pony to give it a break,.

As far as hot rollers go, try the Caruso steam rollers, less damage and easy to use, just Google the word, or look for them at Sally's.

Might have to try that terax conditioner. Oh, I also use Neem hair oil, I smear it on in the morning before I workout, slap on an old basball cap and then workout, the heat helps is penetrate your hair..I do this on shampoo days. I also take a skin, hair and nails supplement. It sucks having fine hair.
