Cycle Max or Ride?????

Nanbo

Cathlete
Okay you Spinning Cathletes!!! I need your advice!
I am contemplating adding a spin bike to my menagerie of fitness toyz :D!
I have never done spinning before, but alas, my plantar fasciitis is not liking the high impact I adore and I need to elevate my cardio to a new level.....hence the spin bike!

Here's my question: Which Cathe spin DVD do you like best (and why?), Cycle Max or Ride?

Any other tidbits you'd care to throw my way will be most welcome! ;)
THANX!!!!!

Ride! I love both but Ride better because i can listen to the music.. It has one of my fav songs by Adam Lavine. I know its not him or the same words but when ur in the zone thats what i hear! Lol

I have pf as well and i still do high impact when it allows, but the spin bike is so nice to have as an option cause u get tired of doing same dvds that r low impact. I also felt cyclemax kept me out of saddle to long a time and that hurt my pf too, rbut only because it was during the first part of knowing i had pf. It was aweful. Now cyclemax is one i can do with no problem. Oo not cardio wise i mean feet wise lol. Good luck!

Thanks Renee!!! I appreciate your response! Did you purchase cycling shoes? I've read that they make it a better workout and keep your feet stiffer (maybe that helps the PF?). What type of spin bike do you have? How often do you spin?

I also prefer Ride. The music is better (except for the very first song, which I hate - too screetchy). Also, Ride has more variety of the actual rides - more seated, variety of paces, etc. CycleMax is a lot of standing and fast tempo rides - I just can't do all that.

Ride. Way Better music. I also like how Cathe tells you to ride with the beat - 1,2,1,2......

Sorry the description isn't great but I'm not much of a spinner.

I dont spin alot, only when im not feeling step or jogging or the other dvds we have. So spin isnt my number one go to workout. But when my feet were hurting it was four times a week. Butnow its when i get bored or pf starts to flare. I didnt know if shoes would work! I think ill try that. I,also wish my pedal was wider as well, i got a golds gym one from walmart it is cheap so if u will be doing it more id try to get a better one. Mines good for the time i use it for. If i have to do spin more often id get me a much better bike. I bet ud love spinninng.

I think id love it more if i do it more but i have so many other choices for now and im afraid ill probly have to spin more later, so i guess im trying to get more out of my dvds before i get to where i cant do them at all. Ekk hope that is along time from now.

I like Ride better. I can't exactly pinpoint why, but I do. I'm not a big fan of the jumps in CycleMax, so maybe that's it. But they are both good.

Hi Nanbo,
Sorry to hear about your PF:( My husband is dealing with it right now.

I'm not a big spinner at all but I decided to make the plunge last year. It's great for those cardio days when getting on a bike is about all my back can take which, fortunately, is not too often anymore. However even when my back is fine I have found that I still enjoy a good spin workout two-to-three times a month:)

I have CPS Stamina (Yellow) bike - it's a decent bike. It does not come with clip pedals for spin shoes so I bought new pedals for it; I got the kind that have the toe cages on the flip sides of them that fit regular shoes.

Having said that, even though I'm not an avid spinner, I highly recommend getting the spinning shoes (about $100). In fact, I even tried Ride with my regular shoes just to see if there really was a big difference and there is; I couldn't go back. It has something to do with the lack of force absorption through the push motion in spin shoes which makes the ride more effective; it sure feels different, that's for sure.

Cycle max and Ride - I do like both but prefer Ride. It is more interesting to me. I like the drills better and they go with the music, I like the timer on the bottom of the screen which shows how much longer until the end of the drill, and I like the overall music better.

Oh - you definitely need a towel and a large water bottle (preferably cold!) handy because you will be dripping sweat! Wear super-good sweat-wicking clothes!

I think that's about all I have for now:D Take care!

This is great info everyone! I too am looking into spinning and have no ideas. I was wondering about the shoes.....is there a particular brand that you recommend? I'm thinking of trying a class at the gym, if it ever agrees with my schedule, and if I can do it purchase one of Cathe's. The gym has some bikes out in the main floor so I could use their bike for a Cathe workout!

I am addicted to spin! I am currently spinning at the gym 4 - 5 days/wk. I find it that exhilarating! (Then I come home and work out with Cathe :)) Spinning is an awesome calorie burner, has zero impact, shapes and tones the lower body, and the ride time goes by pretty quickly. I couldn't get into the spin class that I wanted yesterday (because I called the gym five minutes too late to reserve a bike :(), so I did Ride, and it surely is a great workout, however; I do enjoy CycleMax too - particularly the Extreme pre-mix. I agree with Jennifer on all the points she made about Ride, especially the counter on the screen. Love that! I think both workouts are what you would expect from Cathe, and if you only buy one cycling Cathe DVD to begin with, I have no doubt you will get the other soon after! ;) In a discussion here a while back, Cathe recommended wearing spin shoes as opposed to something like cross-trainers, so I did get them - I have Shimano brand. (Got them from Zappos). Shimano even makes a sandal style spin shoe, but I tried a pair on a few months ago and thought the soles were too soft. Soft soles don't cut it on the bike. You want a good stiff sole for spinning. I do, anyway. Spin shoes really make a difference for me. I don't have cleats, but am debating getting them. I have a Nordic Track spin bike that I got last year and I like it just fine. I ordered it online and shipping was free. The bike is very heavy though, so I had to get my husband to bring it into the house. Putting it together was not a problem either. I read the directions to my husband, and he put it together! ;) And lastly, I want to add that CycleMax pushed me into spinning, and so once again, I am eternally grateful for Cathe! I do hope your PF gets better Nancy, and I hope you enjoy your journey into spinning! Have fun! :)

I, too, have Shimano shoes. Also got them from Zappos.com. Makes a HUGE difference, so I highly recommend getting them.

Love to spin!

I sold my treadmill for a spin bike. I "invested" in a better bike. Mine is by Vision Fitness, V-series. It it very quiet. I can't remember how many pounds are on the spin wheel without looking...maybe 35#.

I agree shoes do make a huge difference. You don't want to curl or tip your toes while spinning. Spin shoes are stiffer and keep your foot in a better position. I noticed the most difference when standing. Mine are Garneau, EgroAir.

If you can afford to, I don't think you will go wrong having both CycleMax & Ride. I use both. Now that I'm more comfortable with spinning, I often listen to my own music and let the music guide my ride.

It's okay to take your first spin classes in regular gym shoes, but when (yes, when!) you become addicted, definitely invest in some cycling shoes. I agree with the above posters and also I highly recommend going to your local bike shop and trying on a few pair. My only caution is to avoid most racing shoes (except mountain), because they tend to have no treads on the bottom, just the cleat is sticking out. There's nothing wrong with that, and it's done to reduce weight, which is extremely important when you have to drag your weight across a finish line. However, in a spin class, it's more important not to wipe out on the gym floor! Your chances of not doing that increase if you have some treads on the bottom of your shoes. In essence, the cleat looks a little recessed when there are a few treads. If this doesn't make sense, your local bike shop folks will know exactly what this means.

I have a pair of Bontragers, because that's what fit me best. Left to my own devices, I definitely would have gone higher end, so they saved me some $$.

Lastly, if you take a spin class and don't love it, try another instructor or two before you decide it's not for you...as we all know from our experience with Cathe, an awesome instructor can make all the difference!

This is great info! I was looking on line at spin shoes and just got more confused;) Never thought of going to a bike shop! Guess who will go now:) Thanks for the tip on trying it more than once too:)

Remember in Rumpelstiltskin how the young girl was tasked with spinning straw into gold? Well, I'm going to spin fat into sweat!!! :p

Everyone's foot and budget is different but just as an FYI I have the Bontrager Solstice shoes, about $100. They have some mesh on the sides and top of the toes and 3 velcro straps across the top. I like them:)

My vote is for Ride as well. I love the 5 minute timer for every song and movement. Also, like the above poster said, some of the songs she has you follow the tempo of the song which is nice if you like to pedal to the beat. As for spinning shoes, I've tried it both ways ie. spin shoes vs aerobic shoes. I have a history of PF too. I also stress fractured my metatarsal a couple years back (high impact Turbo Fire workouts.. too much too soon oops) The spin shoes didn't seem to bother my PF but the way you pedal with a spin shoe( pressure in the forefoot) still irritates my previous stress fracture and kind of gave me that numb tingling feeling in my foot. So I prefer my aerobic shoes. Btw I have the StarTrac velo Xt spin bike and love it. Good luck to you in whatever you choose.

Amyd-

If the ball of your foot is what was going numb/tingling, it could be that your cleat needs to be adjusted. If you take it back to the shop where you got them, they can move them a bit and it could help. But if it was affecting your stress fracture and that isn't healed yet, well, I Russ it doesn't matter.
