Could you give up cardio?

This is such an interesting post! Of course when I saw can you give up cardio - my response was "NO WAY!" "NEVER" For me personally cardio is what gets me pumped up enough to want to do strength training. Now that I do the overall training, cardio, strength and flexibility - I feel I get a good overall fitness program for me individually.

But my motto has always been, "Which exercise works the best? It is the exercise that someone actually does." Hey, if I didn't care to do cardio and only did strength training or vice versa and it works for me, go for it. It really should be individualized. The day I give up cardio, or strength training or my flexibility is the day I am in the morgue! I love them all and they work great for me.

I am 47, have 10 children and people are totally astounded by how I look. No one believes I have had even one child let alone 10. And I would like to add, I feel the cardio has helped me to keep up with all of their demands. I can tote toddlers around like nobody's business and I do not get winded. The strengthtraiing has helped me in the strength area of lifting them up. I also feel the flexibility part helps to prevent injuries.

Touchie touchie people

Relax.. step back and take a breath. Nobody is saying anyone has to "give up" anything. No need to sit here and argue over it. Everyone needs to find out what works for them and stick to it. If cardio works for you great stick with it but if it doesn't work for me then I am not going to sit here and do it. Nobody can tell anyone or try to presude anyone to do cardio. I have tried cardio many time and I personally think it doesn't help one bit. But I am not going to sit here and letcure anyone on if they should or shouldn't do it. It's a personal choice to do it or not so either do it or don't. I am on BodyRx and don't do it and I love that thought. Although, I may do some biking occassionaly but that is about it. So everyone just relax no need to argue or someone's opinion, after all nobody here has convienced me of anything so don't let anyone presude you!!

RE: Touchie touchie people

Exactly, KB.

Edith, nowhere in BodyRX does it tell anyone they have to "give up cardio". It's completely optional. It didn't work for me, I don't enjoy it, so I don't do it. But if you want to, fine; however, I suggest you don't go trolling in groups that you don't seem (sincerely) interested in.

It isn't "one's opinion"; ask anyone who knows BFL and they'll tell you the same thing. Sorry you were bored, but you got out of it exactly what you put into it.

RE: Touchie touchie people

Have you ever watched a news program where a guest gives a scathing review of a book, only to admit that they never read the book, because they were an "expert on the subject", and didn't want or need to?

Hi,
I enjoyed reading everyone's post. Very interesting and my hats off to Cheryl 10 children; God bless you that's wonderful! How do you keep sane? I have 4 and sometimes have trouble! My only stress reducer is exercise. That's the key! I could never give up cardio. I think everyone needs some in their fitness goals. Luckily I love both strength training and cardio. I feel both are needed. I admit I can get my heart rate up when I'm lifting; but those endorphins seem to kick in more when I do cardio. I think cardio really strenghthens the cardiovascular system. Of course the best exercise is the one that a person will do and what works for me, won't necessarily work for someone else. as the nike ad says just do it!

I could NEVER give up cardio, I am a freak of cardio ! I need it, like others have said. I would be very sad to leave it behind.
For me, a program with one or the other would seem..lopsided. I just feel that way. I do absolutely love cardio, but I also feel the need to work in my strength training as well..
I recently have upped my cardio and fallen back strength-wise and have lost alot of extra weight..but that's just me..

I have heard about this technique (strength, and scaled back cardio) "Medical Mark" (Mark Henrikson) of the FIRM brought this up once at Ya-Ya's w/flame wars erupting...it is an interesting thought on exercise. I read that Tracie Long (of the FIRM) did mainly strength training to prepare for her FIRM Tortoise/Hare workouts w/ good results, but I just can't do it!

I love to run, and I love to do hi/lo!! I get very big muscles when I strength train too much, so I don't do it as much..

I got alot out of it actually.Who said that I didn't?I just said I didn't like the weights part of it.Whats up your skirt? I was actually thinking about starting it again when I got the pyramid upper and lower body. Why are you taking this so personal? Did you write the book?

LAST EDITED ON Jan-10-03 AT 10:31AM (Est)[p]I used to prefer weights over cardio any day, and would perform the cardio exercises just to pacify the need for the 'pyramid effect' (strength/cardio/stretching).

I am now a cardio junkie, and do at least 4-5 cardio workouts weekly, not including outdoor cardio (such as rollerblading, hiking, biking, etc,). I LOVE Cathe step (especially), hi/lo and kickbox and can agree this particular form of exercise really gets the endorphins flowing, so I'm thinking that this may be the key. I have not noticed anything incredibly outstanding in the way of fat loss results because of it, but have lost an extra, smaller layer of fat. I know for myself, if I'm just looking for cosmetic results (which I'm not - I'm looking for the whole package when it comes to fitness) I really need to focus on my eating. Not diet, but just healthy eating.

Last night I polished off half of a bag of Lays Sour Cream and Onion Potato Chips at 1:00 or so in the a.m. - methinks this is a little detrimental to the results I'm looking for. I need to get the mindset on the right track, get rid of the junk out of this house, and fuel my body as well as I take care of it in the workout arena.

I have gone off track now, haven't I? I just don't enjoy weights as much as I used to, although I know it's so important to be able to ascertain how much you lift, incrementally lift more as time progresses and concentrate on form, with at least 2 full days being dedicated to weight work. I do this, but I find that I completely dread my weight days and I look forward to my cardio days. It's funny how things change over the years? Yet I'm someone who cannot stand running - I've tried, oh have I tried, but I have never gotten into running and dislike it immensely. Keep me inside with my step and Cathe cardio and I'm one happy camper.

That being said, I'm doing IMAX 2 today (we will see how far I make it before collapsing upon the floor). I LOVED Cardio & Weights so much yesterday as suggested I do, it's just like I received the most wonderful Christmas gift by getting these tapes. I've been ill for the last week (just about) now, and am feeling so much better (yesterday and today), and feel even better (mentally as well as physically) for being able to work out yesterday, whereas I would have just made up yet another excuse not to do at least something. With these new Cathe's, I actually have the incentive to go into my workout room and DO those vids. I plan on starting with an Intensity Rotation (maybe started yesterday?), and will keep visual results posted on picturetrails, not that this is what is my key motivator, just that I want some muscles for Pete's sake (a good reason to include more weights, perhaps?) and I'm hoping that I can finally clean up eating. This is more of a dedication to keep myself motivated rather than anything else. A personal journal to keep me and hold me accountable. I'm thinking with these new Cathe's, I won't have much of a problem.

Sorry for such a long thread! But to answer your question, I couldn't live without my cardio, that's for sure and really have to make myself do weights (whether split or total) twice a week (or if I'm doing Circuit Training, I can possibly manage a 3 day weight workout week, of course combined with cardio!).

I'm with you, Annette!

I agree with Anna, Annette -- you are so articulate and your post is right on the money. :)

You're such a voice of reason here as well as being just a really funny gal -- at least once a week I run a search to make sure I've read all your posts. Always good for a chuckle and often for a pearl of wisdom!

Thanks for the advice Mindi. You know how to handle suggestions better the others:7 I was just bored with the weights part of BFL everything else was fine.I did Cathe for the weights part of it and it was o.k.I found Cathe could work me alot harder then what was in the book. But that wasn't why I gave up on BFL,I found that the cheat day was my down fall.
Don't get me wrong.I don't have a weight problem or anything.I was just looking for a change.I don't know if I will every go back to the BFL program(to much to think about) but I always got the book here just in case I decide to.
I REALLY don't know where all of this came from.I only said that I tried it, like many of us do try different things. It was only about giving up cardio. That was all I really wanted to reply to.Thanks for the suggestion anyway,
Lori

RE: Thanks, Anna and Kathy and StepEdith!

CARDIO FOREVER!

*or, at least until it's time for weights*

I don't know about the rest of you, but my preferred workout bout order is: cardio, leg strengthening, ab strengthening and then upper body strengthening. This is gonna sound a bit risque', but I view the cardio as the "foreplay" and then the strength training as "the act".

I never said I wasn't a geek -
