Costly Matters - BODY FOR LIFE - EAS/METRX

I know from past experiences that things like body for life (ie – eating six meals a day, high in protein) work for me and have seemed to have worked for a lot of people. However can anyone actually afford to drink 3 EAS (or METRX, etc…) shakes a day? Here in England they are £40 for a box of 20 and that works out at £160 per month just on shakes (having 3 a day)…that’s without food! Though I agree that good nutrition is important and that (for me) higher protein works…£160 a month … who can afford that???

Have you tried looking around online for a better price? Sometimes you can get a whole lot better deal than what you find in your local stores.

In the past I have done Body for Life so I definitely understand your frustration about the cost. However, I never liked the taste of the protein powders & shakes so when I did do BFL I would mainly stick with food instead of supplements. If you do want to use supplements then maybe you could use them for one meal instead of three which should decrease the cost significantly. Sorry I was not much help.

not me that's for sure! I could never justify the expense, I mean for £160 a month, just think how many CD's I could buy, how many sports classes I could pay for for my girls, and if I saved it all up over a year, that's the cost of flights to London!

It's the old time vs. money equation again.

Do you have the time? I mean, you could get great amounts of protein from food, some legumes, some fish, some meat, some eggs every day, supplemented with a wide range of veggies. You just have to have the time to shop for it and cook it. But if you make large quantities of everything at the weekend, then pack it in serving size portions and freeze it all, you can just pull out each a.m. what you need for the day and only have to cook once a week! Needs a bit of planning though.

The UK market does not rival the US market for fitness foods, but I think I prefer real food to tell you the truth. I have tried, for example, so many nutrition bars out here to try and up my protein quota and have found only one that I can stand!

What you need to do is hook up with a lover who has a passion for cooking (and for you, of course!).

there is another way to gain muscle size, look at the thread currently up entitled "Another great fatloss article", where point number 8 has some interesting info for you.

Have you thought about substituting in the shakes/meal bars from the slimfast range? When I read body for life, I looked into the recommended shakes and bars and realised that they cost too much (I am UK based too), so I thought the slimfast ones would suffice. As it is, I never ended up following the BFL programme, although I am doing a modified WW by eating 5/6 times a day and am also having 1 slimfast shake and 1 meal bar. I think Boots currently have a 5 for 4 (or something of that nature) deal on at the moment on the slimfast range.

Unless you are entering a challenge, you do not have to use any EAS products and then I believe you only have to show a few receipts. Bill suggests his shakes/bars for a) conveneince and b) let's face it he'll make money that way also.

I've done BFL for over a year and rarely use bars or shakes. Personally I think real food is more filling and I know exactly what I am eating.

Wayne:

try this. Go the the thread I started on "Protein powders for kids" and find the post by Barbara that gives a link for a Carnation Breakfast Drink which may well be available in the UK, seems likely. If you add a sachet of this powder to a glass of milk you have 10 gs of protein for 8 ounces, with an impressive list of vitamins and minerals in each sachet too. Way cheaper than EAS.

And now I will stop posting to you on this topic!!!!!!!

As far as Slimfast and Carnation, double check the sugar content. Most of the protein powders recommended for BFL are protein only and then you add an allowable carb such as fruit or yogurt, etc.

I use Myoplex, but refuse to take it more than once per day MAX. It is NOT the best nutrition there is. It is a milkshake with a mutli vitamin mixed in, that's it. You could accomplish almost the same thing with skim milk, nonfat yogurt, dry milk powder, cottage cheese and 1 multi vitamin all mixed up in a blender!!!!!! You could also add fruit! I force myself to use "real" food unless I absolutely must drink a shake. Plus, real food satiates you better..with a shake I am always left wanting to "chew". But that's just me.....

I drink 1-2 Myoplex Lite shakes per day... I buy the powdered packets from Netrition.com and the RTDs at GNC and CostCo and even Walmart. They're less than $2 per shake, often less than $1.50 per shake. The Myoplex Lite Bars can be found at Target and Walmart for 99 cents each. I think that is a BARGAIN for a convenient, quick HEALTHY meal or snack on the go! Heck, if you grab a Diet Coke and candy bar, you've rung up at least $2! For me, I look at eating healthy as an investment in myself. I don't skimp on "real" food either. I'm worth it! :) Honestly, I find it's less expensive to eat healthy, clean food than the junk anyway :)

Granted, you CAN burn out on them at times, but I think they're some of the best protein shakes around (and I love the Zone bars too).

As for Slimfast shakes, might as well just hook an IV of corn syrup to your arm. I consider that stuff poison. Read the label. It's loaded with sugar, not much protein and those shakes are no less expensive than the Myoplex RTDs.

For what it's worth, a serving of slimfast shake has less carbs and calories in it than the mypolex shake, although admittedly slimfast also has less protein too.

Over here in the UK (and I am looking at this from a UK perspective as icklemoley is based in the UK), slimfast shakes work out to be about £1.55 per serving, whilst the cheapest mypolex shake I can find here works out to be about £1.60 per serving.

They sell myoplex here for £31.99 http://www.sncdirect.com

If it's low carbs and calories you're after, Myoplex/EAS and all the other supplement companies make low carb versions of their shakes :) Personally, if I'm doing Cathe workouts, my body NEEDS carbs and calories. Also, the carbs in the EAS shakes are "good" carbs AND some of the shakes have 5g of fiber. Carbs are not the enemy (unless they're white sugar, white bread etc.).

Anyway, to each his/her own. I'll stick with my Myoplex shakes :) You get what you pay for in some cases.
