cortizone injections

Hello everyone,

Has anyone every had cortizone injections in the knee? If so, did it help you? Did your knee pain come back? Long-term/short-term effects?

I ask because I am still having severe knee pain, and I am getting married in 6 weeks. Right now I can barely walk - let alone dance. I am considering cortizone injections as a last resort. I have been in severe pain for about a month and a half now. I am at my wits end. Please help by giving any feedback you might have. Thanks in advance.

I've had a cortizone shot for my shoulder. I injured my rotator cuff and my shoulder was very sore for about 9 months! I finally went in to get it checked. The Doctor gave my a cortizone shot and my shoulder was better within a month.

Have you seen a Dr.? If not, I recommend you go to a Dr. specializing in Sports medicine, get some x-rays and see what's causeing the pain. If he recommends a cortizone shot, try it and see if it helps. Sometimes they do help and sometimes they don't. It did work for me though.:)

Good luck and congratulations on getting married!

I had one cortisone injection in my knee, and it didn't do me any good at all. What has done good for around 6 months at a time is either Synvisc or hyalgen. The Synvisc was a series of 3 shots in the knee one week apart, and the hyalgen was a series of 5 shots in the knee one week apart. (The shots don't hurt, but you need to be a little gentle on your knee for 24 hours or so.) I would have stuck with the Synvisc, but my medical/prescription plan changed and Synvisc wasn't covered. If your prescription plan doesn't cover it, it's quite expensive out of pocket. But, it enables me to be as close to normal as I'm going to be since tearing my meniscus and having surgery. Good luck! If you decide on the cortisone, I hope you get relief.

P.S. I have heard that acupuncture could be helpful (from a relative), but I haven't researched it at all.

I have had 2 in my knee, 2 in my ankle, 1 in my wrist and 2 in my neck...not one of them did any good :(

I had two in the knee two in the lower back, helped the back but not in the knee and today I am still suffering from major knee pain.

Leslie Marie,

If you don't mind my asking, how long have you had your knee pain? Also, how long did you rest after your cortizone shot? Did you go back to your normal activities and exercise, or just take it easy?

I am hoping that if I get the shot, they can put my knee in a brace so that I can't move it too much and that way I can truly rest it. It is so hard to rest your knees once they are irritated because you need to live your life, you know? Thanks in advance,

Alison

after I got my shot it took a few hours after and the pain!!! I ended up in bed for the rest of the day and couldn't move not even a toe, was taking Ibuprophin and icing the knee all day and by the evening I could hobble to the bathroom LOL. The doctor said I was one of the rare ones to have that kind of reaction, he also removed fluid before he injected the cortisone into my knee. I rested a good while and I only walked for like two weeks and then just started riding my bike and my knee is still bothering me pretty bad. It is so hard for me to go down stairs because the pain is so bad. You have to go to physical therapist to request a knee brace, after the one I got the ones at wal-mart didn't offer the support that this one does. I am not allowed to do any step aerobics for a long time so I am walking and riding my bike as my knee allows.
I would take it easy after the shot. I would stop the steps to let the knee heal. I know that is hard to do and I am going so nuts!! but the walking and the bike riding is helping to curb that LOL. And I must admit I am getting not bad results from that. I no longer have that aweful I call it cottage cheese look on my thighs.

Hmm I had the exact same reaction in my knee but not with any of the other areas. Keeping it still was not a problem <G>!
