copyrighted music

I was doing a Karen Kagen tape called "Step This Way".. I really enjoyed the workout, very complex choreography, but I noticed that just about all of the music used in this video was stuff I recognized from Cathe videos. Aren't workout songs copyrighted? I mean, once you ise it in your video, is it against copyright for somebody else to use is in their video? I'm certainly not complaining - I did enjoy the music very much, but I was just wondering...

In the dressage horse world, if you create a medley of music to ride your "freestyle" to, that particular collection/medley of music is copyrighted - no one else can ride their horse to that same music, you have to find something different. People spend lots of money putting together just the right collection of music to show their horse off to its best advantage, and I wondered how it was in the fitness world.

Just curious...

I know what you mean. I know Karen Voights "Ultimate Cicruit Training" has almost exactly the same music as Cathe's Circuit Max!! I was just wondering this recently too! Don't have an answer for you though...

I think Cathe answered that question just now under Ask Cathe. Maybe she did not copyright the mix she used, and it was owned by the music company who did the mix, so Kristen just purchased that mix as well?

Yes, I reposted the same question under "Ask Cathe" after I posted it here and Cathe gave a very interesting answer.
