Cool website - Attn DebbieH

Wow Nanc! What an awesome site! THANK YOU so much for linking it for me. I have scanned it for about 5 minutes but have bookmarked it to read more later. You cannot believe how timely it is for me. I had a GYN appointment a couple days ago for some female symtoms and guess what he is thinking? Fibroids! I was blown away as he is sending me for an ultrasound the fist week of May and if it confirms his guess, he said he will want to do a hysterectomy, complete with ovaries since as he put it, they are doing me no good! I was in total shock and wondered how in the world these could crop up overnight??? I know my hormones are doing crazy things right now due to pre-menopause but never in a million years did I ever thing hysterectomy. Trust me, I am going to do my research before I let him do anything. I was a bit surprised at his attitude...acted like it was no BIG deal and didn't even really say I have an option, which I know I DO! Can you tell I am upset at the moment? He also made some remark that it could be worse, such as cancer! Also, am I naive/cocky in thinking because I have taken great care of my body in the past that this shouldn't happen to ME? Guess I am just in the shocked stage right now. We are moving in two days so he said it was no problem to wait til the following week for my ultrasound but it is all I think of all day long right now. Just what I needed...EXTRA stress! OH BOY! I see there is a link for hysterectomy's and I read a bit there. I see there is lots to learn about it and the consequenses of having one. THANK YOU again for the site. I am definitely going to do my research. You're a GEM Nanc!

Hi Debbie,

I know you don't know me, but I felt compelled to send you a line. First, I'm sorry about your medical situation!! Second, please, please, please get some more medical opinions. I'm 40 now, but I had to have a hysterectomy when I was 25. I had a total hysterectomy, which included my ovaries. PLEASE don't let any doctor tell you that your ovaries do nothing for you!! It's simply not true. I don't want to get into all of my symptoms, because it truly is different for everyone, but PLEASE, PLEASE get some more opinions before you let anyone take your ovaries or do a hysterectomy. I can tell you from painful experience that there are a lot more side effects (especially long term) than most doctors realize or seem to care about. Good Luck. I will pray for you and pray that you find the RIGHT doctor and the best solution for YOU!!! PLEASE DON'T RUSH INTO THIS!

Thank you so much Lisa! I totally agree with what you said and I DO know that ovaries serve a purpose! I am just blown away by what he said and it hit me like a ton of bricks! I will NOT rush into anything and by what I read already is that fibroids are not life-threatening and if you can live with the symptoms, do so. It also said if you are close to menopuase that they can shrink. THANKS so much for your prayers too. They are much needed right now AND very much appreciated! I may E-mail you or PM you personally later if you don't mind? I have too much on my plate right now with the packing & the move to get into too much right now but plan to make a full investigation later after the move. THANKS! You're a sweetheart!

Oh no, Debbie. Of course you are upset!! The last thing in the universe you need right now is to get a diagnosis from a doctor who recommends surgery. I can imagine how worried you must be feeling. I'm totally empathising with you here.

I know absolutely nothing about fibroids, but if I had them I would become a walking encyclopedia on the subject, as I am certain that you will.

I know you already know, but I just have to say how important it is to get more opinions. AFTER you have read everything you can. The first thing I would do is run out and buy Dr. Northrup's book, Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom. I'm sure she must have something in there about fibroids. If SHE recommends surgery, then you know it's what you need, because to her surgery of that type would be a last resort.

I'm going to do some research too, and get back to you. In short, I'm so glad your condition is not life-threatening in any way, but I'm concerned about your doctor's recommendation for a hysterectomy.

I'll send you a PM.

Oh, and good luck with the move Deb! Take one thing at a time, and put this on the back burner until your move is completed.

Take care! (((((more cyberhugs)))))

Thank you once again Nancy! I have Dr. Northrup's book and will see what it says. I am definitely going to find out all I can before I let him do anything. I am a person who doesn't like to go to ANY doctor including the dentist, let alone have surgery! THAT is major! I have to put this on the back burner for a week and then, will read all I can to make a smart choice. I just hope & pray that the ultrasound comes back with nothing more seroius if you know what I mean. Thanks for all your support. Also, for the well-wishes for our move. We are very excited about our new place and can't wait! Thank you~You're a great friend!

Debbie,

Thoughts and prayers for you. You do have too much on your plate right now.:-( Good luck with the move.

Thanks so much Nancy!! That site is awesome and I am going to be checking back there again. I finally went to my "every three years or so" annual (Thanks for the shove to the girls who know who they are!) and I am awaiting all the labs. I had some blood work done to check for a variety of things, and this is what I am hoping might be helpful. My mom has made me aware of some family history that might shed some light on my health issues....perimenopause is not excluded but there may be some other things as well.

Deborah!

You words are VERY adequate! Thank you so much for the prayers. They mean even more then words! I think the prayers here are truly working because I have been soo busy today packing that I haven't even thought of it all much. THANKS GF!!!!

Debbie:

Sorry to hear about your medical issue.. but Please get a second opinion before you have surgery for fibroids... I have had fibroids for years, my OBGYN at the time they were discovered told me that if he operated on every fibroid, he would be in surgery 24 hours a day! Not all have to be removed. I had an ultrasound just to get a baseline on where and how large it was, then my OBGy watched it for years, It never grew, never had any problems or symtoms that affected me at all. Now in menopause, it has actually shrunk, due to the fact that they survive on estrogen, and with my estrogen levels going down, it is disapearing.

All that said, not every fibroid means surgery.. ask questions before you do this..

Debbie,

Please feel FREE to e-mail or PM me anytime that's good for you!!! I know you have a lot going on right now, but know I'm here for you when ever you need it. I've just been through so much Debbie, with regard to this situation. I'm sure you are very intelligent and knowledgeable, but I thought I could really help since I've been through it!! I don't want you to suffer the consequences that I have. I don't want anyone to suffer them if they do not need to!!

I'm here for you or anyone regarding hysterectomy and the havoc it can wreak on your life. I thank God that I am a fighter and I go on despite how I feel. I just don't want YOU to go through it!!!

Lots more prayers coming your way!!!!:)

Okay - well geez - makes me appreciate my doctor a little more. I've had fibroids for years. It is a problem for me, but not so much that I want/need a hys. He volunteered that I *could* have the hys if I wanted it (he'd leave the ovaries BTW) because that is the only way to permanently rid yourself of them, but that he wouldn't recommend it. He said if I could possibly hold on until menopause, they'd shrink. I'm waiting if I can. I am blown away by your doctor's cavalier attitude towards this.

RE: Dallas!

Debbie ~
I am sending hugs and prayers your way. I know you will do as much research as is needed and make an informed decision.

Also, congratulations on the move. Please, do One Thing At a Time and Do It Well. Don't worry about getting everyhing in order all at once. Remember... baby steps and take care (regular breaks) of yourself!

PS multi-tasking is over rated!!!

RE: Dallas!

Debbie

Two co-workers of mine went through this experience. Their fibroids were so bad they were debilitating. Losing blood, becoming anemic, lots of pain. They both got histerectomies.

You are so close to menopause, Debbie. What a darn shame.

I heard that some New York doctors developed a process to shrink the fibroids in lieu of surgery. It was on Good Morning America a couple of years ago. I wouldn't know where to begin searching for that information but I definitely remember them interviewing women who had the procedure and it was successful.

Fox2star!

Thank you! I also read about them shrinking during menopause! I am def in pre-menopause and wondered why he wouldn't mention this to me??? I guess the ultrasound will tell all and I will be sure to do my research before I opt for surgery. Thanks for your reply!

RE: Dallas!

Candi-

I've been doing some reading on this topic in the last 24 hours or so, and I've learned so far that 70% of women have fibroids at some point, many of them during periomenopause. The number of people who have such severe symptoms as you are describing is small, and most women have no symptoms at all. Also, and I think most importantly, hysterectomy is usually not necessary. It seems to be that only those with severe symptoms, like your co-workers', opt for hysterectomy. And many times fibroids actually go away by themselves!

I was very relieved to read these things.

I don't like to be negative here, but I have to admit that I am disturbed by Debbie's doctor's comments. Frankly, if he were my doctor, I'd tell him to take his license to practice medicine and shove it where the sun don't shine. I would then find myself a highly recommended feminist (preferably female) gynecologist. I hope this comment doesn't upset you, Debbie. As usual, my emotions are showing, but it is meant to help.

But again, there is time for all that after the move! I agree with the person who said that multi-tasking is overrated.

Judy!

Thanks HUGS & PRAYERS help lots!!! Re: baby steps, WILL DO! I can't wait to implement Flylady & "SHE" once we move. I am going to try to STAY organized by using their methods. Thanks for the reminder.
