Consuming enough dietary protein...protein drinks.

Okay, I mentioned this in a post a few days ago...that I didn't think I was probably getting enough protein in my diet...and I have since determined that I should be consuming 120 grams of protein a day or 7 servings. There are probably weeks that I don't consume that much so this explains alot for me. I am not a big meat eater...I will divide up one chicken breast between myself and my kids and that is more than enough meat for me. I stopped eating cottage cheese when Dh's high cholesterol was discovered. I will occasionally eat eggs for breakfast or have a hard cooked one on a salad but that is pretty much it. So, now I'm reading that I should be consuming 120 grams of protein a day and that some of that can come from protein drinks.

How do the rest of you on this forum get your daily protein requirement met...are you using protein drinks and if so...which ones and are you having any side effects? I onced tried drinking Carnation instant breakfast but if I had it too frequently I got the runs...not a good situation so I quit buying that.

And in case you're wondering where I got that number...it's from a chart in the book "Body Rx" that a friend loaned me today. I'm just flabbergasted at that amount.

I drink a protein/fruit smoothie for breakfast every morning, so yes I get some of my protein from a protein drink. Lots of beans have protein too, so you can get it there too. If your dh has high cholesterol why did YOU stop eating the cottage cheese, shouldn't he have quit eating the bad stuff?!? Cheese is another good source of protein and you already mentioned eggs. I think I average anywhere from 80 to 100 grams of protein a day and that is probably not enough. sigh. Chicken is a very good source of protein and breast are higher than say thighs in the grams they have.

Do what works well for you!!:)

Thanks Annette :)

I stopped buying cottage cheese because that is one of Dh's favorite foods...and one he shouldn't be having every day until he gets his cholesterol numbers under control. I'll have to start keeping it out in the fridge in the garage where he hopefully won't see it.

I have no idea how much protein I am supposed to have, I don't count grams....but each day I go for some cheese, some lentils, and either eggs or fish, usually salmon. So, in addition to my daily balance protein bar and the 2 cups of milk I drink to get my supplements down, I think that's enough concentrated protein. Then there's also the amounts in veggies and in bread, etc. I just can't hang with protein drinks. None of them taste as good as pure cold milk in a glass with chocoate Nesquik added, so I'd rather have that! I hate their powdery taste, the fact that they don't dissolve properly and you have to drink the lumps, makes me want to gag. Plus my daughter keeps knocking the canister onto the floor where it spills its contents, so I am just going to throw it out, it's in the way....but a Balance bar I can eat on the run and usually do.

Although I'm not concerned about my protein intake anymore, when I used to be, Myoplex shakes were awesome. The regular and lite versions were both good, particularly the chocolate flavor. Unlike making my own soy or whey powder shakes, these were very smooth and left no yucky aftertaste. You can get Myoplex at the Vitamin Shoppe & GNC.

Getting enough protien has been a problem for me too, since I always prefer carb foods. I found that I feel much better if I limit my carbs and up my protien though. I eat a lot of egg white and cottage cheese. I cook my oatmeal in egg whites and water for breakfast, and put cottage cheese in it after it's cooked. (Is fat free cottage cheese bad for your husband?) I'll eat tuna in a cooked patty or just on a salad. I do have a protien powder shake after my workouts. I love Designer Whey. I'm using Isomatrix Vanilla by Syntrax right now and it's pretty good. I haven't had any *side effects* from using protien powder, other than it does add calories and I need to keep watch on them.

I had to experiment around a bit to find the best protien level for me. If my protien is too high I feel sick to my stomach all day. If my protien is too low and carbs too high I'm hungry and feeling hypoglacemic all day. That's how I spent what seems like most of my life... hungry and hypoglacemic, but now that I'm getting more protien I feel much better.

Eggs (per serving 4 egg whites/1 egg)
Cottate cheese
chicken
lean pork - pork tenderloin
extra lean ground turkey or turkey breast
extra lean steaf
Protein powder in protein pancakes or shakes
Soy nuts (but have to watch fat content)
turkey jerky if on the run
Last resorts: ff cheese or lf string cheese
tuna, fish, etc. works also but I'm mentally allergic to seafood :)
