Computer question from a computer idiot........

I was wondering if anyone could help me with a stupid but annoying problem. I got a new laptop and am trying to get my usual shortcuts on my desktop. Well, everything was going fine until I tried to put yahoo in as a shortcut. I got the yahoo trademark on my desktop and can't get it off. It's huge (takes up 3/4 of my screen) and is seperate from the other shortcut items. There is a thin vertical line seperating the shortcuts from this eyesore and I can drag it over and squeeze it close to the side of the screen, but it is still there. The Yahoo that I have on there right now looks like an overlay of some sort. It doesn't even function as a shortcut. I have managed to get the yahoo shortcut on my desktop but I have this great big red YAHOO on my screen and can't get rid of it. I tried going thru my desktop with no luck. I also tried right clicking on it and deleting it that way, but delete is not an option. UGH!! Can someone help me????

Thanks

Angie

I think you installed the yahoo trademark as your "wallpaper" or background

In your control panel, click on display, the icon that looks like a monitor with a brush touching it.

Then click on the tab that says desktop, choose a different background or choose none click on apply then ok.

OK - I did that but I now have a different background and still have the big YAHOO overtop of that. This is so annoying x(

Thanks for trying though.

Angie,

This is just a total shot in the dark, but is there any way you can delete it from the Desktop folder in the directory? If you look in the Desktop folder, does the thing even show up in there? (Right-click on Start, click on Explore and then click on Desktop at the top of the list to get to the folder.)

All of my shortcuts are there, but not the YAHOO thing. I appreciate the suggestion though.

But, it's kinda weird. There's a thin vertical line between the shortcuts on the left of the screen and this yahoo logo on the right side of the screen. If I scroll across the screen with my arrow, the double arrow (right and left) appears so that I can pull over and squish the yahoo over to the right of the screen, but it won't disappear. Hmmmmmmmmmmm.......yup - it's driving me crazy.

Any other thoughts?

1) When you right-click on the thing, do you get a "properties" option? If so, can you change it to "hidden"? Or can you get the location of the thing from "properties"/general and then go to that folder to delete it?

2) The only other thing I can suggest is to remove Yahoo and reinstall it, which is a total pain in the neck but might get rid of it.

MissL

Yes - properties is an option and when I click on it I get the Display Properties box which contains 5 tabs labeled themes, desktop, screen saver, appearance, and settings. Nothing I seem to do makes any difference. I try changing themes and click apply and then OK and the background changes like it's supposed to but not the yahoo.. OY! How the heck did I mess this up so bad??? Leave it to a computer dork like myself. LOL

Angie

Oh yeah!!! I finally got it to go away!! Thanks for the input Missy and Dave. I went to the Display Properties box, went to the Desktop tab, clicked on customize desktop, chose the web tab, and unchecked 2 boxes that were checked. I cliked OK, which took me back to the Display Propeties box where I clicked apply and then OK and BAM! It's gone! Whoooohoooooo! Can you believe I even had the guts to go back and delete the box that was giving me so much problems.....yup - I did!! LOL! Thanks again for your help!

Angie

Good job, Angie!! Usually if you just keep at it you'll find a solution . . . And you are NOT a computer idiot!!

MissL

Awwwwwww - thanks MissL! It was very nice of you to help. Thanks for taking time out of your day to do so - it is very VERY much appreciated!!:) :)Sorry I mis-wrote your name earlier;)

This is the essence of "hacking." You have no idea where you are but keep on trying until you fix or eliminate a problem.

Yikes! Well, considering the recent mess I just got myself out of, I doubt I will be going down that road anytime soon:D LOL!

Hacking is not a bad thing. It used to be a compliment. The title "hacker" was stolen by the news media and used to label bad computer citizens whose real titles should be "cracker", "scriptkiddie", "cyberpunk", "skiddie" to name a few.
