Combo 3 in Step Blast

Hi Cathe! I'm having the most difficult time w/Combo 3. I've accomplished everything else in this amazing workout but that. I don't understand what to do after I do the rock press & go over the step & do a rebound & go back over the step. I'm crossing my right leg back & then for some strange reason when I start a suffle move I'm always on the wrong side & I'm ending my straddle taps earlier than you. I've been doing your tapes for 12 years & have always mastered them but I must say this one is stumping me & I'm getting quite frustrated. HELP! Kathy

BTW: I LOVE this new series the music is FANTASTIC!:D

Kathy,

I am not Cathe, but I have done the Step Blast many times. When you do the rock step then over with the right leg, you go off the left side of the bench with your right foot, then shuffle back with your right foot, then step on the step to do the fast repeater with your left foot.

Does that make any sense? Maybe you are staying on the right foot and not straddling over with the right foot - which then you end up on the left foot for the fast repeater, then you shuffle backwards on the floor around the step, then you are doing the repeater on your right foot again.

Hi Cheryl! So after I shuffle backwards I'm supposed to be facing the left side from the back of the step I then straddle & start the tap straddles w/my right foot & land on the front side of the step? I would then do 2 twirls backwards & over the step & squat bringing me again to the front of the step? Oh dear this is driving me crazy!!!!!! Thanks I'll try figuring it out tonite. Kathy

Yeah, that is a crazy part to explain - I found the third combo to be very challenging myself and I have been doing Cathe's tapes for eight years now.

I think you said it right. When you do the rock step, on the left side of the step facing the TV, you rock over the step to the right, go back over with your left foot - shuffle back (but only to turn, not a long shuffle) with your right foot, then straddle with your left foot which brings you to the fast repeater, then you double turn around the step to the left of the bench, then you end up back on the left of the bench doing the repeater with your right foot.

Oh my gosh, it sure makes it sound complicated. maybe Cathe can explain it better - I am sure you will get it - just practice that part a few times. I hope this helps!

Good Luck,

Cheryl

Actually, when you shuffle with your right foot backwards, bring your left leg and foot to a knee up, then straddle over the top, that way you end up with the left foot still facing backwards to the fast repeater.

Hi Kathy! Don't feel bad, you are not alone. I see this happen in my classes too. That sequence has some "cross phrasing" (technical choreography term) in it which will make you feel a little off the phrase (or out of sync with the music) for a couple of beats and then suddenly your back on the phrase (or back in sync with the music). It is that musical "off balance" feeling that tends to make a person also want to rush the movement to get back in sync.

Ok, Lets talk it through: It' easy even though it visually looks like a lot of work here ;-)

leading right............Do a ROCK PRESS on the left side of the step(right leg on step/count 1...left knee lift lifts/count 2....left foot down on the floor/count 3...right knee lifts/count 4.

Now Go Over The Top...rt foot on step/count 5....left foot on the step/count 6....

Now Rebound.....right foot down on the floor (off the right side of the step) and the left foot lifts up at the same time(dangling over the top of the step)/both actions are on count 7

Count 8 is where the cross phrase occurs because you end the rebound on count 8 plus you start your over the top in the other direction on count 8 too.....

Go Over The Top....traveling toward the left side of your step, step on the step with the left foot/count 8....then step on the right foot/count 9.

Exit The Left Side Of The Step.....place your left foot down off the left side of the step/count 10......cross your right leg behind your left foot AND at the same time lift your left foot in the air (thats a ball change there)/count 11....place your weight back on your left foot/count 12

Now comes your SHUFFLE.....place your right foot on the step, followed immediately by your left on the step and then your right again on the step (thats your Shuffle action also known as a triple step or a ball change). As you do this quick shuffle step you need to turn your body so that you are facing the left side of your step/count 13 and 14.

Now STRADDLE your step.....you just finished your shuffle with your weight on your right foot so now place your left foot down in a straddle position followed by your right foot down on the TV side of the step/count 15 and 16.

You are now ready for the FAST FOOT REPEATER....put your left foot up on the step/count 1....then lift your right knee up/count 2.....now TAP your right foot down/count 3....quickly shift your weight on top of the step from your your right foot to your left foot and finish by placing your weight FIRMLY on your left foot on the step/count 4 and 5........ pull your right knee up/count 6......step down on the TV side of your step with your right foot/count 7.......and finally step down with your left foot also on the TV side of your step and place it right next to your right foot (you are now facing the back wall)/count 8

using your right foot you are ready to start your triple step going around the corner of the step on the floor.

Hope this helps:)

Wow Cathe I can't thank you enough for helping me. I have to print out your reply & do exactly as you've written. And I don't feel so bad now knowing that your "students" had the same problem as me. Take care, Kathy:*

Oh geez... here I am at work picturing all these moves in my head. I need to WORK and not think about how fun the new DVDs are going to be! ;-) Oh but it's so much fun to read about new choreography!

THANK YOU!!!!!!!! That part gave me the most trouble yesterday!! I was doing it, but I know I was off count the entire time. This helps a lot!!
