Circulation Issues?

Cathe Newbie here!

I have been lurking for a while and think you all are so knowledgeable so I thought I'd post a question that I've had for a while...

Whenever I do squats, lunges, etc. with the barbell on my shoulders I think I am losing circulation in my right arm. It starts with the feeling of falling asleep and then hurts if I don't take the bar off. I have been exercising for a long time and have always had this issue so I have used dumbbells instead. However, since I have been exercising with Cathe and getting stronger I need heavier weights and just cannot get comfortable doing good-form squats with heavy dumbbells! I put the barbell on the "meaty" part of my shoulders and have experimented with moving it around a little - nothing seems to help. Does anyone else have this issue or any advice???

Thanks!
Nat

Nat-
I have always had this issue in both my arms...What I notice is that when I am bloated (ttom, eating high sodium, dehydrated) its much much worse... I usually just adjust the width of my grip & it makes it OK enough to complete the exercise.

As far as lifting more - the best option available for many of us is to wear a weighted vest ...I use one that can go from 1-20 pounds.... Cathes got one coming out very soon thats a 10 pounder.

HTH a bit.

Welcome Nat!

Have you tried a bar pad? Sometimes I use a towel around my shoulders in addition to the bar pad if I'm going really heavy.

It could be you are pinching off a nerve or tendon in or near your shoulder and that is causing numbness/pain. Try playing around with your hand placement on the bar and be aware of your posture. Make sure you are not shrugging or tensing up since it can put more strain on the shoulders.

I also think a weighted vest is a good idea:)

Thanks for the tips ladies. I'll give them a try and see what works. Guess I'll have to look into the vests - can't wait to see Cathe's!

Thanks again!
