Cathe--your ideas on anaerobic workout frequency

Hi, Cathe!

I hope you have the time to answer some questions in your busy schedule :)

I've recently had some discussions with instructors/trainers at the gym I belong to about their recommendations on frequency of anaerobic workouts--how many to do in a week. I've been told to only do 1-2 a week and others say just don't do 2 in a row.....and now I'm confused. Those who say don't do more than 1 or 2 claim it slows down fat loss. What do you think?

Thanks!

Kelly

ps--by anaerobic I mean a cardio workout that frequently jumps at or above my threshold, or a steady workout right around the threshold.

Hi Kelly! I feel that more than two per week opens the door for increased risk of injury verses benefits. While this type of training has wonderful benefits, it also is very demanding on the body and pushes it to a more extreme level of training. Therefore, I feel it should be spread out over the course of the week and only done one to two times per week to keep the benefits outweighing the risks. And just what are these benefits? Overall, you burn more total calories in the course of the day (even at rest), anaerobic training also stimulates your metabolism to burn overall body fat more efficiently (again, this is an overall benefit, not one that occurs during this workout, as the body burns more glucose when in the physical act of doing these workouts), it raises your body's overall level of cardiovascular conditioning, and helps break through training plateus.

That's my two cents :7
