Cathe! Your favorite shoes?

Hi Cathe, I've been working out to your videos for 15-16 years now. I started working out with your StepNMotion videos back in 1989 and i've been hooked ever since. I have every video you have ever produced. You have kept me in amazing shape for my wedding and after having 2 kids. I'd even say i'm in better shape now at 38 years of age then when I was 22. You truly inspire me, and make working out a pleasure, and something that I look forward to doing everyday. On another note my poor feet have really taken a beating over the years, i've been diagnosed with Plantar Fasciatis in the right foot. My question to you, is over the years i've seen you wearing many different types of Ryka shoes, which did you find the best for cushioning and shock absorption in the forefoot?
Living in Canada you have better chance of finding a kidney donor than a good pair of aerobic shoes. I just bought a pair of Rhythm II for $140 and I'm not that impressed. I was thinking maybe I could find an older version of Rykas with great cushioning online for much cheaper price. Did you have a favorite type? Thanks so much in advance, Lyanne in Toronto

Lyanne,

Obviously I am not Cathe, but I have been working out with her for a number of years too and I require shoes with the ultimate cushioning because of a hereditary foot condition.

I have been wearing Rykas for quite some time, but went through a short time when even the higher-priced style, just wasn't good enough. I am back to the Ryka Rhythm I and I am getting along pretty good. I will need new shoes pretty soon and will probably get the Rhythm II.

As far as older models, the one that I liked the best was the Ryka Evolution and Re-Evolution. I have tried a number of sources and haven't been able to find them anywhere. You may be able to find the Stylus some places, but I wouldn't recommend it.

Replacement insoles can make a huge difference in the cushioning of the shoe. I hate to pay over $100 for running shoes and then have to put in a $30 insole, but I don't really have a choice. I use some New Balance cushioning insoles that work really well, but I have to buy my shoes 1/2 size larger to accomodate the insole. I also only wear Thorlo socks, which are very thick and add some cushioning.

If you haven't done any research on Plantar Fasciatis, you might check out www.runnersworld.com

This is a condition common to a lot of runners and they have some good advice on treatment.

And of course, you may need to see an orthopaedic specialist or a podiatrist for custom orthotics.

Best Wishes,

Tina

Hi Lyanne...I had to write because I must be one of the few people on earth whose feet haven't been very impressed with Rykas. I prefer more cushioning and stability in a shoe than than the Ryka shoes I have owned. I kept thinking that it was just the style, but with each purchase, I have been dissapointed. I posted this earlier on a shoe thread...I found out recently that Asics is making trainers again!!!! The shoe that I have found that works for me is the Asics Gel 310 TR. Great cushioning, great support, great stability, great flexibility. (Some complain that the tounge bothers them a little, but I haven't had this problem.) I have been waiting for Asics to come back on the market with shoes to use in the studio! I am so glad they did. Their Gel 210TR did not have enough cusion for me, though.

Hope this helps!!!

I gotta agree with the Asics 310TR as well. When Ryka did fail me, I found these through Road Runner Sports. I didn't mention them in my previous post, because I couldn't remember the model #. Mine are old, but they are my chore/lawn shoes now. They are an excellent shoe. I probably bought mine 3 yrs ago and wore them for a year or so.

The other thing I like about this model is that it is a mid-cut shoe (not a high top), so when I am done with them for aerobics, I am more likely to wear them for everyday.

Hi Lyanne

I'm not Cathe either and I know I shouldn't be answering questions addressed to her but I also have battled Plantar Fasciatis more than once in both the right and left foot (at different times). It's no fun is it, and it took forever to go away because I refused to quit working out - very stubborn! Anyhow I've found the shoe with the very best support in the forefoot is the Ryka Enlight II which I believe Cathe and crew used for some of the Hardcore series DVDs. You can purchase this shoe on Zappos.com. This particular website is awesome in its customer service and speedy delivery. Good luck to you!

Sharon:)

Not Cathe either, but here's my .02: Have had problems with PF, got it under control and my Ryka Enlight (with insoles) have been great. Needed new shoes, so went with Avia 681 (Cathe and Lorraine are using the 684 I think in KM) anyway, with recommendation from Avia I went with the 681 and my PF flaired up. To be fair to them after using them for a couple weeks they are willing to take them back. But all of that to say that I really think a lot is trail and error:-( and it may be expensive trail and error;( ;(

Not Cathe either but I totally agree! I LOVED my Re-Evolutions as my first pair of Ryka's so followed them up with Stylus and was soooo disappointed to the point to where I was afraid to get any more. But after several other brands later, I tried again, getting the Enlight's and I like these almost as much, almost. The toe box is just a wee bit too roomy for me.

I have really bad callouses on my forefoot that force me to have a lot of cushioning in that part so I have to choose my shoes wisely. Some of my best cushy shoes have been the Reebok walking shoes that I got during their Heart Association charity program where a $25 donation made via their site got you a "free" pair of shoes. These have been marvelous. I also found a pair of Ryka walking shoes at Mervyn's that I wish I had purchased after trying them on during several store visits. They were also very cushy for the forefoot. But alas my store stopped carrying them. I forget the model name but they were about a $50 retail shoe so not that high end.
