You _all_ at SNM did a great job. It was marvelously easy to get in (even for a Netscape user

) and the broadcast is pretty good quality. Thanks so much! Back to enjoying the broadcast...

Not working for me (as usual)

I'm so frustrated! Chris, does Cathe TV work with Media Player 7? I already had Media Player 6.4 but have had no luck in the past watching Cathe Cam, so I went to the Media Player site and downloaded the more current version. I'm getting errors whether I try to connect through the Cathe TV screen or doing it manually on Media Player.

When I try to connect from the Cathe TV screen, it sits for about 20 seconds then I get "Page cannot be displayed/cannot find server." When I try to connect manually, I get a network traffic error. But I was also getting that last night when I was testing, so I don't necessarily think it's an accurate message.

Just tried on Netscape for the hell of it to see what would happen, and I got a "There is no response. Server could be down or not responding" error.

Me neither!

Reminds me of a country song.

I have a feeling I can't get in due to a high load of traffic. I have a DSL line so that's no problem. I can't get beyond the Cathe TV page, it just keeps trying & trying & trying. I'll try again later.

No, I use IE 5.0

I just tried Netscape at the very end to see what would happen and that's when I got the "no response from server" message. Otherwise I was using IE all the way.

Mine didn't work either

The sound was all static, and the picture would work for a little while very slowly, then my computer would freeze, so I finally gave up after restarting the computer 3 times! It could be my computer, but I'm still so sad! I was really looking forward to it!

Try This

The next time try this. Click on Media Player to start it. If it doesn't start then do this:

Just go to "File" at the top left corner of your browser-> then "Open" and then type http://209.71.96.114/LiveClass and see what happens. Try for both IE and Netscape. We have seen some problems with Netscape where this works. Perhaps it might work for IE too. Let me know what happens.

Worked for me...here's what I did.

First off, I'm on a G4 Macintosh running Mac OS 9.0.4, so the same thing may or may not work for you Windows users out there.

I'm also using Windows Media Player 6.3 (Mac version).

I got the same results using Netscape 4.73 and IE 5.0 -- when I click the TV screen on the Cathe TV page, Windows Media Player opens and I get a "Connection Failed" message twice, then an "Invalid URL" message. But, when I used "Open Location" (under the File menu) in Media Player and typed in the URL given on the Cathe TV page, it loaded just fine. The video was a little choppy, like Cathe Cam usually is (or maybe just a little better), but the audio came through very smoothly. I was kinda surprised -- I wasn't getting sound with the Cathe Cam when I watched last week's live class.

Anyway, Circuit Max looks great, lots of fun! Can't wait to get the real thing!

I did try that :(

I went back and forth between trying to get on through the CatheTV screen and putting the address in manually in MediaPlayer. With the latter, I got a network traffic error, every time, but I was also getting those errors last night when I was first testing the new version. So I don't think it's a valid error message. I was able to get other things to work through Media Player, in fact I was listening to a South African radio station for a while last night!

The only other thing I can think of: we have a personal firewall program called BlackIce because we have a cable modem. Could having a firewall cause a problem?

Of course, I could never get Media Player to work even before we had a cable modem and no firewall, so I guess that's probably not it.

Hoping for better luck at 3:30...

I got great sound

but my picture was tiny and it didn't move very often. I don't think I have a very fast computer. I downloaded the IE version 7 a couple of days ago in anticipation. I know very little about computers, so I don't know for sure what it is called, but I followed the directions from this site. Thanks!

What I saw looked good!!

Cable Modem

I have a cable modem at home so I'll try to get away for awhile and see how it does or if it has any problems. Yes, A firewall could be your problem, but I would rather rule a few other things out first.

worked great for me!

Just thought I'd chime in and let you know it worked great for me! I have the latest version of media player, IE 5.0, a DSL line and Windows 2000, I don't know what difference ANY of that makes but it worked for me!

LOVE the cooldown music! SO relaxing. . .

Didn't work for me but I fixed that

Pamela,

I was very frustrated this morning too. I've been able to see all of Cathe's Cathe Cam classes but when I tried viewing the video this morning, I got errors that it couldn't connect to the server. I'm using IE 5 and Media Player 6.4.

This afternoon I tried connecting again and paid closer attention to the errors. I also let the error dialog take me to the Microsoft website to view help for the errors I was getting. My company has a firewall set up and we use proxies. The MS website told me how to change the advanced option so that Media Player would use my proxy settings.

I changed it and was immediately able to connect to the server and got a gray TV screen. Hopefully this means I'll be all set for the 3:30 showing.

Hope this helps,
Sharon

I think it is the firewall!

I still got the same error from the CatheTV page. However, I just shut off the firewall and tried to manually load the page using the Open URL command on Media Player, and it seems to be working. I won't know for sure until the video starts playing, but at the moment I'm hopeful!

Yup, it was the firewall

It's working now. If I try to turn the firewall back on, the feed stops immediately. So I think that was definitely the problem.

THANK YOU for trying to help me through all this. I appreciate it.

Just wondering....

Paula, was just wondering how the speed of the video was on your cable modem. I tried my cable modem at home with the 6.4 vwesion of media player and it would cut in and out. I went to settings and decreased the hardware accelerator settings. This made the audio work fine. The video was like watching a slide show, but it never hung. This may help some of you that have had similar problems. My best advice is download the newest version "7.0" of media player. It has many more options to format the player for your connection speed.

It was pretty good!

I used version 7.0 of Media Player. It was a little choppy but for the most part not too bad. A step up from a slide show, but a step down from the real thing, is how I'd classify it. I only had "buffering breaks" two or three times. The sound was very good. Honestly I was just so relieved to get it working that I didn't care too much at that point!

Since I really don't like to take down my firewall even temporarily, I was wondering if there's any way to get the address CatheTV is generating from so I can tell my firewall program to "trust" it? (Would I just use the URL?) Not a major issue, since there probably aren't many of us out here with personal firewalls...just something to add to your "if I ever get the time" list!

UPDATE: I figured out how to add your address to my firewall, so I can now view without having to take it down. Yippee!
