Cathe, PUB vs SH

Hi Cathe,

Best to you in Springtime!

OK, I am verklemped! I see over and over again that froum members seem to favor PUB for UB strength and definition.

I am working lower body in a cardio/freestyle like rotation but attempting to build strength and definition in UB.

Can you explain the difference betwtweem pyramiding vs slow controlled heavy reps...what will the difference in results be?

Thanks,
X

With the pyramiding, i.e. no rest really in between sets, and the fast pace at which Cathe leads this workout, there is a heavy endurance component in PUB, which can increase definition and strength to a certain degree.

Great strength gains will be best achieved, however, with the S&H series, which will also help you gain maximum muscle mass and great definition. The slow reps take out most of the momentum when lifting the weight. It is really only your muscle that lifts that weight, and therefore the demands upon the muscles are greater, leading to greater strength gains subsequently. The one minute rests between sets allow you to continue pushing for as heavy a weight as possible, i.e., say you finished set 2 of bench presses with the 20 pound dumbells, and were maybe feeling it by the end of the set, not sure whether you could have managed any more. Well, it is more than likely that you could, after a minute's rest, still pump out 4 reps say at the heavier weight, before dropping down to a lighter weight to finish out the set. This is what I do.

I have never been stronger, nor lifted heavier, nor had such great definition as I have during and following S&H series rotations. With PUB, I could never get beyond 15 pound dumbells for bench presses, with S&H I can go beyond 20's.

Hi Maddiesmom,

I think you've confirmed what I have been feeling all along and that is that S&H are so super effective in building muscle mass and definition, yet it seems to me in this forum that more people favor PUB.

I suppose in the end you have to follow what gets you the results your looking for. I still don't understand the purpose of pyramiding, unless, like you say it's endurance so that it would fall into a category similar to ME, MM...nevertheless it is a fun workout!

Thanks for answering this- I was wondering what my next purchase will be- I guess I'll get the S&H next-can't wait!- can you tell me- do you work out your whole body 3xweek? or do you do UB one day then LB one day (with a day in between) and then your total body on that 3rd day??I am just wondering because I want more of a "cut" look-I currently do cardio & weights/muscle endurance/ pyramid U&L (with days in between)and cardio (jumping rope fast 4-6 x week)-any insite on this is appreciated- deb

Maddiesmom,
Just curious- I have the S&H series and have yet to use it. What is the rotation you used to get results?
Deanie:)

Thanks for bringing up this topic. This summer I'd really like to focus hard on gaining strength and definition..I already have the pyramids..though I've only done PUB, I was loving the results that I was getting in my shoulders.

I was thinking of trying this for a month, then rewarding myself by purchasing S&H and going from there:

Day 1-PUB + 20 mins of cardio (High Intensity Interval Training)
Day 2-PLB
Day 3-KPC + PUB
Day 4-PLB
Day 5-20 mins of cardio (HIIT)
Day 6-Any total body w/o
Day 7-OFF/Stretching

Any thoughts?

Bumping --except I do use S&H but would love to see Maddiesmom's rotation!
