Cathe, padded barbell question & advice

Hi Cath! I'm curious -- in the last few video series you've used a couple of different types of barbells (York, US Weight and the silver one (Ivanko?) you used in the PS series which if memory serves me was actually a heavier (15 lb?) bar than the black US Weights bar). It looks like you're using the US Weights one again in this series. Do you have a favorite and if so why, or do you prefer different bars for different work? Here's why I'm wondering.

I am debating about whether I actually NEED to add another barbell to my own equipment collection. I've had the original "FIRM" barbell for 13 or 14 years now -- it's quite similar to the York padded set -- and I like it a lot. With the padded bar, my hands close around it so that my thumbs are just resting on top of the first knuckle of my fingers. If I'm wearing my lifting gloves (Harbinger) with the padded palm, my grip is even a hair looser on the barbell. Now that I have finally worked my way up to heavier weight on biceps and triceps bar work, I am finding that my barbell grip doesn't seem to feel as secure, sort of, as it would be with my hand more tightly closed. I am even wondering if this slightly looser grip is placing more stress on my fingers than I should have. I don't FEEL any stress, but somehow it seems logical that for this particular kind of bar work (and maybe even for moves like deadlifts and dead rows), the load on my hands and fingers and forearms might be more appropriately distributed and focused if my hand was gripping a smaller-diameter bar. Does that make sense to you? What do you think, ma'am??

Thanks so much for your advice -- I've been having such fun and have been so challenged this month by the September rotation, by the way, and I'm so looking forward to the new workouts!!! :7 :7

Kathy--

I'm so glad you asked this question! I've been experiencing the same thing, but I didn't even quite realize it until I read your post (does that make sense? :D). I, too, have the Firm barbell, and I love the shorter length and the padding. But I have noticed, now that I'm going so much heavier with Cathe, that my grip doesn't seem as strong. I use the Harbinger padded gloves, too, and maybe all that padding on the gloves and the bar is too much? I have small hands, too, so I'm really aware of my grip on a lot of the moves with heavier weights. I feel it most when I'm doing dead rows. I just did ME on Saturday and was thinking that I didn't like the way my grip felt on that part where she does the dead rows/clean & press--I'll bet it's because of the thick padding on the bar! I hope Cathe responds to this post; I'll be interested to see what she says. Maybe it's time to buy a new bar, although I do love the shorter length of the Firm one!

Thanks for this post! :)

I used to have the Firm barbell also. Once I started working out with Cathe, I sold it due to the same problem. I thought at first I was just too weak to lift heavier. That was not so, I bought the Troy Lite Barbell Set that Cathe uses in the CTX series and I could really heavy up. I did like the padding when placing the barbell on my shoulders, but the padding around the bar was too thick for my small hands.

Hi Kathy! Although you don't want to hold your barbell with a super constricted grip, you do want a secure grip. I don't believe a wide bar grip will provide you with a secure grip in many instances. Especially when doing work with heavier weight or work with a forward tilt or work with an overhand grip. All of these situations, as you already noted, would stress your hands (and forearms)unnecessarily, perhaps even promote some hand cramping, in the attempt to keep the bar from slipping out of your hands.

If I were going to recommend a bar right now, I would recommend the Troy Lite Barbell. I found the length and diameter to be the most comfortable. Take Care:)

Kathy!

I have a Troy lite barbell and got it for the exact same problems you were having. (These stubby little fingers of mine!) I LOVE it. It made all the difference in the world being able to grasp it and feel confident. I also had a wider-in-diameter barbell before plus different weighted bodybars but found the heavier sizes to be too much for my fingers. You will love the Troy Lite. Good Luck!

RE: Kathy!

Hey Miz Debbie!

Where did you get your Troy Lite? I'm thinking that's definitely the way I need to go. There's a thread over on Open Discussion about them being available at Fitness First, but I've never purchased from them before. Just wondering what your source was!

It's funny how differently we're all built and yet face similar issues, isn't it? I have really long fingers but my wrists are very small and my hands are small (at least compared to my fingers -- I think there may well be some orangutang or something like that in my family tree! :))

RE: Kathy!

Tee-Hee! Orangutangs! :p Yes, Kathy~I purchased mine from Fitness1st.com Here is a link. I personally talked to a fellow on the phone and he was super nice. I also received it in just a few days from ordering. (Three days, I think) http://fitness1st.com/bars-weight-systems.html

Scroll down to the Troy Lite Workout System.

The ONLY negative I found was that the biggest plate is 7.5 pounds, which when you are scurrying fast to switch your weights, I had to think a lil' harder about how much weight I am loading, compared to it being easier to think how much if those plates were 10#'s instead. Does that make sense? My other 10# plates I have for my other barbell work fine so I just steal them sometimes. I think you will be very happy with it. Let me know.

RE: Kathy!

As Debbie mentioned, the largest plates that come with the Troy Lite are 7.5 pounds. YOu might want to do what I did, and order extra plates (10# and 2.5#) at the same time.
