It must be for obliques, I can't imagine what other muscle group it would work, although who can tell these days with the wacky stuff trainers keep coming up with.
Anyway, at the gym last night I saw a woman doing this:
She sat towards the rear of a bench, upper body leaning back at an angle, hands behind her on the bench supporting her upper body. Her legs were bent, toes touching the floor (if you can picture someone sitting sidesaddle, that's what it looked like). She lifted her toes up over the bench in a slow, controlled motion and touched the other side with her toes, and then the other way, etc. etc.
I hope this description made sense. I was watching her thinking it may be a very effective oblique exercise, then I started thinking it would be even better if you could find a way to put a med ball between your feet........what do you think?
So now I'm trying to figure out how to attach stirrups to a med ball.........;-)
Oh also thank you for your suggestions for rear delts--I tried the one when you're on the decline bench sideways & really felt it. When I read your post that said use 5 lb weights I was thinking "what? When does my hero Cathe ever use 5 lb weights, other than maybe finger strengthening?" :7 But I started out doing 20 reps & could barely make it to 15 by the 3rd set. Thanks again!
