Cathe - a question on one of your posts

Hi, Cathe :) . I'm hoping you will expand on a statement you made in response to a thread earlier this week ("Reached target weight, but still have spare tire."). You said:

"...But I do agree that adding a day or two of weight training would be beneficial (split routines of course). ..."

My question is: Are split workouts better than total body workouts?

The reason I ask is because I finally stabilized my weight (after battling it for almost 3 decades), just to enter menopause and find everything shifting, mostly to my waist. I am trying to find the best way to work out and have tried previous suggestions you made to shake up my routine - but nothing is working.

I will admit I only exercise 5 days a week ;) but I do get in 3 cardio and 3 weight workouts. I eat clean. But I feel like I'm beating my head up against a brick wall. Hopefully if I can find the "right mix" then things will be less inclined to look so dim, lol. I've been alternating the type of weights I do (i.e total body and body parts) plus I try to get one kickbox and two step (or one step, one floor) cardio each week.

Also, if you get a chance to respond, is there a general guideline I can use to adapt your rotations to a 5 day week?

Thanks, Cathe!

Hi Shadow, I know exactly what you are talking about. I had a hystro. 6 yrs ago, and last yr. I entered menopause for it... At first, it hit me hard, and it lasted for 1 yr. I am now post menopause, and I believe, thanks, goes to the herbs i been taking. I gained 25 lbs. mainly around my waist and hips, I couldn't lose it no matter what... but my herbalist put me on herbs and it helped. She started me with a dieters cleanse, which let me lose alot around the waist fast. if your interested in knowing more, Just ask me. :) good luck brenda

Hi, I just wanted to jump in real quick and add a comment/question about weight gain and hysto's. I work at a women's fitness center where I am a fitness/nutrition advisor. We have run across a few older women who gained weight, around 30 lbs., and just can't seem to lose. The commonality between all of them is that they all had hysto's in which they gained the weight after. We've tried everything but their weight just doesn't want to budge. I've asked my doctor, they've asked theirs, we've talked to the corporate dietitian, and no one can give a solution to this problem. I imagine its a mix of hormones and metabolism, but we've still hit a brick wall. Do you have any suggestions that have worked for you that we might offer them? I'd appreciate any advice - - thanks!

Brenda,

I am interested in finding out more about what you did to lose weight around your waist. I will be 46 this summer and have gained about 12 pounds in the last year while exercising 6 days a week and watching what I eat. It is crazy, no matter what I do nothing helps. A lot of my weight is around my waist. Could you send me some info? My email is [email protected].

Thanks

Brenda - I am certainly interested in any information you have! Luckily, my weight gain has been minimal but I suffer the shifting shape syndrome :-( . My upper body keeps shrinking because everything is falling to my waist  . Luckily, I have no other "real" menopause symptoms - just the enlarging abdomen! My first 2 years weren't bad at all. It's this third year of it that things are starting to go south.

Hi everyone, sorry haven't been on here in a few days. ok, here goes.... well, I was going insane and depresion was setting in,I was gaining wt. like crazy around my waist and hips, i never had hips, they just appeared it seemed, overnite. A friend of mine told me about her herbalist, the dieters cleanse and so on. i didn't have to eat certain foods or anything, it was a 2 week cleanse, you just fallow the directions on the box. i buy my stuff through naturessunshine.com. i started walking,40 to 60 mins. 4 to 5 days a week, in addition my regular workout routine. I also started the glycemic index diet. i lost 18 lbs. in about 2 months. In addition to all this, tho, I am on herbs regularly, you only do the dieters cleanse every 4 to 6 months. but i take dong quia, which was initially for my menopause symptoms.. (ie: mood swings, depression, hot flashes etc.) it stopped all this within about a month. I was amazed. my doctor is also baffled becuz he did a hormone test on me to see where i was in menopause, and my estrogen levels are consistant with a woman who is still menastrating. My herbalist says" it's becuz of the dong quia, it is holding me.
But i do want to add one more thing about wt. gain and not being able to lose it. I have hypothyroidism too, which i also take a thyroid activator in herb form, but sometimes, i have read, women going through menopause can develope, Hypothyroid, so if your clients are having trouble losing inspite of exercising, and clean eating, you may have them look that way. I have been lazy lately, and have gained some of my wt. back and haven't been eating as good as i was, and let me tell you... i feel it. but all in all.. I feel the walking and herbs helped, tremendously.
I hope this helps you all :) peace and love Brenda
