cardio intervals

Cathlete
is interval cardio a must? i ask b/c it seems like its always highly recommended. Do any of you just still do only steady state?

I do interval training every week along with steady state. I do it partly because they say it's a more effective cardio work out in terms of getting more out of it in a shorter period of time but also because it makes it more fun. Most of my cardio is running. I love to run but steady state running can get boring for me. I need to mix it up.

I mix it up- I definitely think intervals are terrific at fat burning and are very efficient. But I still do steady state sometimes too- I just enjoy it, especially in a good step workout.

thanks ladies. do you think that doing CC 3 times per week is to much? Should i be doing it only once per week and then doing other cardios like a SS and a kickbox? opinions?

I usually do CC every other day, sometimes substituting some other form of HIIT but CC does such great things for my legs I'm reluctant to give any CC sessions up.

I have done CC 4 times per week and LOVED it! Started out with steady state walking 5 to 6 times per week and was pretty burned out and little to no results in regards to weightloss and cardiovascular improvements.

I saw dramatic improvements with CC and I can't wait to get back to getting my CC fix :D

I don't think there is any one size fits all recommendation, everyone is different, just listen to your body.

Cardio Coach keeps me in great shape for mountainbiking, which is mostly HIIT in essence. During the peak of my riding season I'll be on my bike nearly every day for over an hour easy and I have no ills effects other then being able to really pig out afterwards with a honking burger. Now that I can't ride as much I'll do CC three times a week.

Hi kariev,

Here's an article from Art of Strength's womens' newsletter with some of Rachel Cosgrove's ideas about interval cardio:

She had a few articles on Figureathlete.com awhile back that talked about her transformation when she moved from steady state training (for her triathlons) to interval training/metabolic circuits. They're really interesting!

ETA: Here are the Figure Athlete articles, in the order in which they appeared:

I was all geared up to start her eight-week program, but couldn't since I have to let my knee recover. I've done her Metabolic Circuit workout a few times with my GymBoss timer, and it's truly HARD!

ITA. Steady State for the most part, but put in interval at least once per week. Cathe's stuff (and Cardio Coach) is da best for it.

I see I'm not the only one who can't stay away from FigureAthlete.com. But I would never have run across the RC article from AOS if you hadn't put the link here. Thanks. Verrrrrry interesting. I'm getting the best results I've gotten in a long time doing pretty much what she says (alternating Cardio Coach with full body weight training and one day off) but then I started pulling out old my old circuit dvd's (The Firm workouts, Winsor Pilates, and lots of others) as add-on, just-for-fun-and-a-good-sweat routines, after work. The ad-ons sure seem to be accelerating my results, yet RC seems to feel there's no added benefit. Hmmm.
