Can Protein Powders Be Fattening?

I heard or read somewhere that if you drink too much Protein that it will turn into fat. Is that true? If so, how do you know when it's too much? It has something (I think) to do with your weight?

I'm confused a little.

Just MHO - yes. I gain weight everytime I put this in a drink. I swear I do. And I get bad gas - I know TMI but it's the truth.

Janie - as I understand it, if you are taking in extra calories, no matter the form, your body will turn it in to fat. I don't see how extra protein, if you are under calories, would turn into fat. It could be wasted b/c you can only assimilate so much protein at a time though. And I would think it would depend on what is in your protein powders too as to how your body stores those calories.

Baylian - what kind were you drinking that gave you the gas?? I totally stay away from soy proteins and whey protein concentrates can cause it if you have a lactose problem but the isolates should not cause such an issue.

I agree. You may not be gaining, it could be bloat.
I limit my powder protein to a post workout shake. I like to drink a fruit smoothie with a little protein powder right after a hard workout:).

As far as how much protein...I think it's very individual. My body responds to 90-100grams of protein a day. I look and feel my best when my diet is made up of a 40 % carbs 30% protein 30%fat. With too much protein, I'm not as lean and too little I feel sluggish.

There is a goo article re: protein in the July issue of Oxygen.
Protein for Pennies pg 50
they state that an active women (that would be us) doesn't need more than one gram of protein per pound of body weight per day.

That saids I get about 100 - 115 per day depending. On cardio days I don't strive to get that high.

Like Cynthia said, she found what works for her. Everybody is different.

Thank you so much for all your inputs.

I thought maybe if the body didn't assimilate the protein that it would most likely pass through the body, but not turn into fat if you have a little more than you should. Thank you for confirming that for me.

As one of the poster pointed out and what I plan on doing is: 30% protein on weight training days, and more carbs on cardio days. It does sound like the ideal thing to do.

Thanks again for your generous responses. I really needed to know what you all thought about that. Now, I can create fantastic protein drinks that I think will work. I'll let you know.
