Bulking

Hi Cathe

I have been working out for a long time with weights and am a runner as well. My question is about lifting heavy weights and bulking. My goal is to have a leaner look, are these work outs not for me. What would you suggest?

Thank

I certainly am not Cathe! However, I have worked out with her for many years.

Here is my take...I am sure others will chime in as well. I think that Cathe's workouts would be perfect for you; especially since you are a runner. I always worried about becoming more 'bulky' than lean; as my body type lends itself to building muscle easily, but not necessarily defining. However, and this is me; but I think it holds true to most, you can't bulk up too much being a woman number one. Number two, if you lift heavy on her weight workouts, and really work that weight, as well as cardio (which seems like something you have a handle on being a runner!) and a good diet, you will be lean with these workouts! I actually lift heavier than ever and am seeing good definition. I always thought I needed to cut back on the amount of weight I was lifting; but it is actually the opposite. Cathe can also be tailored to whatever you need as well. And the rotations that she posts (and the archive of them) are very helpful for whatever specific goals you want. But, it takes awhile to collect all those workouts! She is well worth the time and effort.

Good luck!

Thank you Becky, you were very helpful. I have two more questions, where do I get the rotations, and second, I only have one Cathe video which is a pyramid workout, what others would you recommend? There are so many.

Thank you again

I recommend them all! But these are the ones I use when I am amping up my weight work:

Gym Style series
Pyramid upper
Pyramid lower
Slow and Heavy Series
Muscle Max
Legs and Glutes
Butts and Gutts
Cross Trainer series (these are great and I think we tend to forget about them)
4 day split series

These allow me to work each body part once per week. I also like these to 'touch' my muscles one more day per week if I feel like it:

Supersets
Push and Pull
(the two above are not everyone's favorites but I like them...you can push yourself on them bigtime and they are great compliments to the heavy weights the others give you.)
Muscle endurance

But of course, I love her cardio as well. And she has a lot that have cardio and weight in them too. I will use those a bunch too. HOpe this helps. You can't go wrong with her.

I am looking forward to her STS series too. I envy you for running! I have never been a runner and when I try I hurt my knees. Maybe it is an excuse! But I have never gotten into it although I bet I could get some great lean out benefits from it!
