Buff Olympians

Hi everyone,

Has anyone been watching the Olympics? This morning, women's weight lifting was on (not sure if that's the correct title). These 115 lb-ish women were lifting at least twice their body weight over their heads! Although I definitely admire them for their hard work, training, strength, etc., what struck me was how dangerous the "clean and jerk" looked. Of course, they know what they are doing and how to avoid injury. However, each time they lifted, I got nervous that their arms were going to like snap off. The way their wrists and arms are positioned at the top of the lift seems so unnatural. It's a little unnerving also when they drop the weight behind them and it bounces so high!

What's everyone's favorite to watch? I'm really enjoying diving and swimming these days. I like that at the bottom of the pool, when the race begins, that the swimmer's name is (I assume electronically)projected. Is this something new?

Did you see that gymnast whose finger dislocated? Youch! The coach just popped it back in and he finished the routine. Yowza! When I coached it, I had one of my team girls that had that happen once and I had to fix it for her. I had nightmares for years!
I do love watching the gymnasts. I wish I was still involved in it, but its a painful sport.

I have a hard time caring about the Olympics anymore because the host cities have to basically bribe the Olympic Committee to get to be host. And the influx of professional athletes takes the fun out of it for me.
It's a joke that the U.S. couldn't even qualify a baseball team to get into the Olympics. I see that the basketball team lost, which in the long run is good for the sport. These NBA players we bring in are not good TEAM basketball players but just basically one on one players. Puerto Rico gave them a hard lesson in how to play as a TEAM, and I can appreciate and admire that.
BUT, I do admire the swimmers and track bikers the most. I am only an average swimmer so I always marvel at those athletes.
GO USA!!

Those swimmers are truly amazing. Swimming is my favorite event in summer olympics. Swimming is so mental and physical. And to see them come out and really push is awesome :7 :7 GO USA!

I would also like to see more syronized swimming televised. Those girls are amazingly strong.

I've been comparing physiques and I think that i admire the beach volleyball girls the most. They are completely ripped all over.

I'm amazed at some of the swimmers too. The men are incredible, of course, they seem to me to always be totally ripped.

The women have always seemed to have just a little extra but now they look like the men?

Seems like everyone is weight training these days.

It is amazing to see these athletes.

the gymnastics is my FAVE!! Watched it all evening last night. I kept thinking "Those girls are soooooo strong...physically AND mentally. The balance beam never ceases to amaze me. I also like the mens. GAWD...the upper body strength it takes to do those rings!!!!!
I enjoy watching the swimming and diving too. I'd like to catch the weight lifting but haven't seen it yet.

My favorite is gymnastics.I think it is amazing that a human can flip 3-4 times in the air and then land on top of a balance beam.I could sit and watch it all day.

Of course, my favorite sports are the equestrian events, not only because I ride myself, but because it is the only sport where the men and women compete as equals, not as separate events.

I have to say I love looking at the male gymnasts. Especially when they are on the rings. Their arms are so yummy!

I love gymnastics too. I am quite fascinated by Svetlana Khorkina. She's still in the sport while many of her contemporaries have retired. This must be her third Olympics or something. I've never been a fan of her prima donna attitude, but her determination and resilience are admirable.

I'm rooting for Mohini Bhardwaj. She went through a lot to get on the U.S. team. She's very inspiring.

I was looking at the muscles on the U.S. swimmer, Amanda Beard last night! Wow! She looks great!

Swimming & Gymnastics are my favorite sports to watch!

Having been a gymnast in my younger years, womens gymnastics is my favorite sport to watch. I have also enjoyed womens beach volleyball, mens and womens swimming. When you think of the dedication and determination these athletes have it's really amazing.

I agree! As well, many of the U.S. equestrian Olympians are in their mid 30's and 40's. So cool!

Lori --

I agree, they are absolutely amazing! They can flip in the air and land on their feat and I can't do straddle-tap-repeaters without falling on my arse :)

I love watching the Olympics. It makes me want to be better, stronger, faster, bigger, more-ripped, etc. I always end up putting more into my workouts after watching it. Gymnastics is my favorite, followed by track, then swimming. My attention span is really short so I can't bring myself to watch any of the team sports (softball, basketball, etc). I do hate it when NBC teases me by saying ... "coming up next, women's gymnastics and swimming ..." (whoo hoo)... "but first -- an hour of rowing". Boo! Darn that Bob Costas!

How many olympians do you think take steroids and suffer eating disorders - a rumor that seems to plague women's (actually the competitors really are just young girls anymore aren't they?) gymnastics and all track athletes continually.

So much pressure - I don't know how they do it.

Yes, Hedygs, it's great that the equestrian athletes are older! I don't think many younger (junior) riders have what it takes to compete at the top levels - mentally or physically - especially in the three-day competition. The horses they are riding are really EXTREME athletes - they just eat up the scenery, don't they?

I saw the women's trampoline gymnastics the other day, and the oldest gymnast was a 38 year old. She didn't qualify for the finals though, but I gotta admire her determination and courage knowing that she is facing competition from girls half her age. And her physique was incredible!
