Bryan Kest or Rodney Yee?

I am trying to choose one of these for yoga:

Bryan Kest Power Yoga Series
Rodney Yee's Power Yoga Total Body

Can any of you gurus help me by telling me which you prefer and why?

Thanks!!
Marie

Bryan Kest - I fond his voice so soothing and his instruction on what to notice in each individual body quite helpful. And I find him quite nice to look at as well.

I haven't tried Bryan Kest, but I do like Rodney Yee's and have quite a few of his Yoga tapes. For me at first he came off being a bit odd, but his style of teaching Yoga really won me over. His Power Yoga is pretty tough, it took me, I think three weeks of doing it two times a week, to really get the hang of it. It's fast, so you got to really know your yoga poses and form, he goes over some of the trickier moves it with you, but it's more of a check list, then how to do it. But most of the workout, a pose is spoken everyone goes into it for about 2 seconds, and then another pose is spoken, the sun salutes are very quick. The first few times I made it threw without screwing up, I burned a little over 300 calories in that hour, and my body felt pretty well worked, as most of the poses were advance, and you really worked your arms in a lot of the poses as you continue to step in one only to push your upper body up to be in a totally different one the next second. I love it, and even take a Power Yoga class once a week, but do know all the standard Yoga poses by heart before trying Power Yoga. As most Power Yoga videos/classes assume you know, how to do the sun salutes, cobra, warrior pose, dog, cat, before you put the workout in the DVD player.

I agree with everything Lorrie said! LOL! Rodney Yee's DVD has been sitting on my DH's desk. So, I haven't tried that one yet. My vote would be for Bryan Kest. I got the DVD at Deep Discounts.com for approx $14. You get three work outs on one DVD.

Well, I don't have either one, but I was looking into it... So I asked a Yoga instructor friend of mine. She highly recommended Bryan Kest and said he gave a good, strong workout. Sorry, but that's all I know.

I like Rodney better than Bryan. I think the hair creeps me out, LOL.

Wait. They BOTH have creepy hair!!! LOL even harder, at myself. Sheesh.

I find I'm more relaxed after Rodney, don't know why.

I've got both and they are both have SUCH different styles...both are easy on the eyes, lol...and both deliver top-notch, high-quality workouts! I can't pick between the two!! I also love Eoin Finn, especially Power Yoga for Happiness, at www.vancouveryoga.com He's got a unique style all his own as well, and this particular DVD is just excellent...it's got the full 80-minute practice, and then several "premixes" of 30-, 40-, 53-, and 55-minute practices. As far as Bryan K. goes, I've got the "Energize, Tone, and Sweat" DVD (with 3 practices, all about 50 minutes) that is also just excellent, as well as "Long, Slow, & Deep," a CD which is also wonderful but is about 2 hours in length. I've got Rodney's "Power Yoga Total Body," which is great, and also Power Yoga for Flexibility, a 25-minute practice that I LOVE and is perfect to tack on to another workout. Oh, and "Yoga Shakti" with Shiva Rea is also outstanding and has a "workout matrix" kind of like Cathe's Blender that lets you put your own practice together (and has 4 "premixed" practices). There are SO many good ones out there...so many yoga DVD's, so little time...!! :)

LOL Amy...I guess the "hair factor" on both could use some "makeover-ability" (I'd rather have Bryan's hair long again and have Rodney cut his!), but they both have enough other wonderful, ahem, qualities that I tend to overlook this! :)

Hmmmmm... Funny you should ask. I just did R. Yee's Power Yoga Total Body today and thought what a nice practice it was. It's challenging, has beautiful scenery and Rodney's form and cuing are excellent. The pace is slower than a lot of my other yoga DVDs, which is refreshing because I can tend to rush from one pose to another. His transitions are beautiful to watch and a good reminder that the transitions can be as important as the poses. There are no background participants and he uses voice-over.

I also really like Bryan's Power Yoga series. It is beautiful to watch (in a much different way) and is quite challenging. I prefer Rodney's teaching style because, IMO, Bryan has a tendency to talk too much and too aggressively. The background yoginis are uber-flexible, which can be intimidating at first, especially if you use them as a guage for your own practice. (I'm sure that most of them are/were professional dancers.) Bryan doesn't participate; he just walks around adjusting everyone. Sometimes they'll show a shot of him doing a pose by himself. Although the pace is faster than in Rodney's, the amount of time spent in the poses is longer -- a good thing, IMO.

If I could only keep one of these DVD's, I would keep Bryan's. It's got three challenging practices that are about 50 min each and I love the sequencing and the way he holds the poses for a long time. (If only he'd shut up once in a while!)

I forget who posted this, but Eoin Finn's Power Yoga for Happiness is also excellent and one I reach for again and again. It's about 80 minutes long, but contains several shorter premixes with different emphases. I just ordered Riva Shakti's DVD. I've read great things about it at VF.

Bryan's dvd's

hi,

i was wondering, for those who have b.kest's dvd w/ the 3 practices, energize, tone, sweat...are they chaptered at all...or just go all the way through? (wondering, if there's a mix and match option) i have all 3 in vhs, and do those workouts so much, want to switch over to dvd, too. btw, although, i favor bryan over rodney, i have to agree with some of the other posters about bryan talking too much sometimes. especially, in his newer videos. the original 3, are tolerable, but i just can't always handle all the talking on his newer ones.

thanks!

Eeeewwwwwww!! ;) The spandex is a turnoff, on all but maybe (MAYBE) Lance Armstrong. And him, only because he's a champion survivor... ;)

Hi Susan :) If you like PY4H (and Eoin's style), try downloading one or all of his CD practices from his website (they're free!)...I did this with 3 of them, his "Quickie", "Magically Hips," and "Yoga Honey" (for which he has a pose guide you can print out). I'm really liking doing them from CD since I don't have to look at the screen and it seems to flow so much easier! I still love doing the DVD's...it's just sort of a nice change of pace doing it from audio only once in a while. :)

LOL...Yeah, guess if anyone deserves to wear spandex, it's Lance. :)

TerryMia-
How long are the CD practices? That sounds like a fantastic idea! Are they really free?! That would be amazing.

RE: Bryan's dvd's

thanks terry!

rats, on the no chaptering..hmmm..but, i guess i still have the option of choosing which workout i want to do. don't have to do them in a certain 1,2,3 order, right? sorry if that's as dumb question. :p

thanks!

RE: Bryan's dvd's

I don't think so- I think it does get more advanced as you go, but I'm not sure how much more advanced.
