BOSU?!

Can anyone tell me about the newest fitness gaget? It looks so cool! Can you really use it like a step. I can't do high impact any more and when I saw this I thought "Maybe I could do power 7's on this". (Who'd thought I'd miss them so?)

Thanks
Susan

Hi Susan!
The Bosu can be used as a step, but I would recommend using slower and more straightforward choreography on it. It's good for taking a begginner/intermediate type of step workout (Firm or the original Reeboks, for example) and kicking the intensity up a notch. You're also using your core a lot for stability. There are a series of workouts just for the Bosu (and the intro video you get with it will give you a taste of the kinds of workouts you can do on it). bosupro.com has the workouts (on DVD). I really like "Core Synergy," which I think does the best job of doing what the Bosu does best: challenging balance and the core. I really felt my spinal erectors being worked on some of the moves. And the abs (even those hard-to-reach transverse abdominals) get a great workout as well.

Susan,

I totally agree with Kathryn. The bosu is great but it is best to do slow and controlled moves on it. There is also a DVD called cardio fusion by Rob Glick that has some high impact that is fum - but it takes alot of balance and strong core to balance just right on it.

The DVD Core Synergy is also my favorite for core stability - I have been doing it about three times a week and can tell from the work out that I am getting better at the balance on it.

You can do yoga on it, too. I love the BOSU, I try to incorporate it somehow into all of my workouts. I should say that Gay Gasper and Mindy Myrlea also have DVD's on the BOSU that are higher impact. The really interesting one is the personal trainer one which is just some instruction on the BOSU - this DVD is 85 minutes long. I am totally amazed at what can be done with this new fitness gadget.

Thanks so much Cheryl & Kathryn! The Bosu sounds great. Where did you all get yours? The one in Collage seems a little expensive.

Thanks again!
Susan

I got mine at www.fitnesswholesale.com for $119. It came in only a few days, but I have yet to take it out of the box and use it. I also got 2 DVDs for the BOSU (Gay Gaspar and Rob Glick) on that web site. Does anyone have any other DVD suggestions?

Mindy Mylrea has a DVD called Explode. The DVD has two 1 hour workouts; Explode with Mindy and Burn with Keli Roberts. There is also Mindy Mylrea's "Awesome Strength" (CIA 2301). I ordered these through www.jumpincfitness.com. Now, I haven't actually done these w/o's yet, just previewed them. They look fun and very challenging.

Thanks! I'll have to look into those.

An update on the Fitness Wholesale site: They're having a sale on the BOSUs--$109. Wish I would have waited. Just my luck.

If anyone can be down Atlantic city NJ this Fri, Sat or Sun, I can get you the bosu for $99! Their will be a bosu certification on Fri 9 to 2, I can meet you after that at 3 out front of the Ac convention center, or sat or sun between 1200- 100(lunch break)or we can arrange a time, email me, I'd be happy to save someone money!

Wish I could go to your BOSU certification--sounds like fun.

Tried my BOSU and DVDs with Rob Glick and Gay Gaspar for the first time today. I have osteoarthritis and a bad left knee, but this was the first time since I injured my knee that I could do a higher impact workout and I don't have achin' knees afterward. I had almost given up hope of finding something as fun and intense as step (I do kickboxing and love it, but it's a different animal), but I think BOSU is it. I didn't do as much intensity as they showed, but it was my first time through and I wanted to see what was going on. Awesome workout. I'm sorry I didn't get on the BOSU sooner. Hope Cathe does a BOSU workout in the near future.

I live in the same town as Fitness Quest's factory, so I got one for less than $100.00. My Y is getting 48 of them & is going to train the GFI's and PT's to use them. Too Cool!
